‘Reminders of Him’ charts the tumultuous experiences of Kenna Rowan. After completing a six-year prison term for the vehicular manslaughter of her former partner, Scotty Landry, Kenna is granted parole. She returns to her hometown with the sole purpose of finally establishing a connection with her five-year-old daughter, Diem, who was born during Kenna’s incarceration. Things are complicated because Diem is under the custody of Scotty’s parents, Grace and Patrick. Kenna encounters significant obstacles as she endeavors to rebuild her life and prove her worthiness to her child.
Her path is puzzling due to her unresolved sorrow, past trauma, and deep insecurities. Amidst all this chaos, she forges an unexpected connection with Ledger Ward, the proprietor of the local bar, who was Scotty’s closest friend and shares a profound bond with Diem. Paradise Apartments is a Symbol of a Fresh Start in Kenna’s Life
Paradise Apartments (PA) is a fictional apartment complex where Kenna first goes after returning to her hometown. The residential building is where she learns to accept her new reality, while working to improve her life at any cost. The apartment is more than just a physical space, but a poignant navigation of her state of mind as well. One of the unique parts of Kenna’s apartment is its lack of furniture and luxuries. This symbolizes the situation Kenna finds herself in. Just as the dilapidated apartment is, she is also a broken woman, looking for some hope. The residence’s interiors and limited living space also signify the weight of the grief Kenna carries. PA is also the place where key moments in the romantic journey between Ledger and Kenna unfold.
She also forms a bond with her cat, Ivy, who becomes an important part of her life, too. The narrative utilizes PA to reflect the changing nature of Kenna’s fortune. From dejection and sadness, she moves towards hope and joy, all within the world of PA. Interestingly, the tonal shifts in the film are poignantly conveyed through the apartment complex. When Kenna is going through a crisis, PA looks isolated and abandoned. But when she experiences moments of hope, the residential complex seems brighter, with sequences of residents being happy. Thus, PA is an important presence in the overall narrative.
Ward’s is a Special Place Where Kenna’s Past and Present Unexpectedly Converge
Ward’s is a fictional bar that serves a significant purpose in the movie. Kenna remembers her life with Scotty and goes to a location she assumes is a bookstore they used to go to. It is revealed that the bookstore has been replaced by Ward’s, a bar owned by Ledger. Kenna and Ledger meet for the first time at the bar, and instantly sense a romantic tension building. Kenna is also hired by Scotty to work as a bar helper, which strengthens their relationship. The bar replacing the bookstore represents Kenna’s present taking over the guilt of her past. She is able to focus on her present, despite the past haunting her. Ward’s also portrays the passion between Ledger and Kenna as they grow closer.
Through the lighting, interiors, and visual elements of the bar, the narrative focuses on the emotional changes Kenna undergoes as she attempts to rebuild her life. Ward’s is crucial to the character development of both Kenna and Ledger, as they come to terms with their issues and insecurities. Ultimately, Ward’s is an important physical space that contributes to the story’s intensity, grounded nature, and authenticity.
