Patricia Spivey Balanced a Successful Career With the Love For Her Family
Patricia Ann Marshall was welcomed into the world by Bennie Mae and Hardie Marshall Jr. on March 11, 1967. While growing up, her household was filled with the joy and laughter of her and her beloved brothers, Roderick, Harvey, Richard, Rodney, and Charles. She received immense love as the only daughter and was known for her kindhearted and outgoing nature. As a woman of faith, Patricia eventually joined a Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. She studied at Paul Lawrence Dunbar Elementary and James D. Ryan Middle School before graduating from Jack Yates Senior High School.

When Patricia was just 15, she entered into a relationship that led to the birth of her only daughter, Patrina Marshall. Becoming a mother motivated her to pursue a career. Around 1988, she became a mailroom employee at Methodist Hospital. Patricia’s diligence helped her climb the ladder at Methodist Hospital, culminating in her becoming the Executive Administrative Assistant and eventually the Methodist Supply Chain Manager. A fitness enthusiast, she maintained a strict exercise routine and even participated in several runs and walks for different charitable causes.
Some of those walks and runs included the Sisters Network Walk, the American Heart Association Heart Walk 5K, the Houston, Texas, Running with the Bulls 5K, and the Susan G. Komen Walk. Patricia’s philanthropic endeavors further expanded when she helped raise funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities through the Tom Joyner Foundation’s Annual Cruise. Inspired by her father’s love of photography, she took up the hobby herself and frequently spent her free time taking pictures. Additionally, Patricia enjoyed cooking and traveling to different exotic locations.
Patricia Spivey Passed Away in Her Home From Multiple Gunshot Wounds
Patricia faced a major heartbreak when her mother suddenly passed away on December 23, 2001, at the age of 64. Fortunately, Patricia found solace when she met Renard Spivey, and they soon formed a strong connection. In 2013, he proposed to her, and shortly after, they tied the knot surrounded by friends and family. Following that, they settled into their residence at the 5000 Block on Briscoe Street in Houston, Texas. Unfortunately, things took a dark turn on July 28, 2019. Shortly after 3 am on that fateful day, Renard called 911 to report that shots had been fired at his home. During the call, he reported that he and his wife were shot, and Patricia was reportedly lying on the floor. Reports state that the 911 operator instructed Renard to give CPR to the 52-year-old as the paramedics and officials rushed to the scene.

First responders reportedly found Patricia lying unresponsive in the master bedroom closet, where she was sadly declared dead. Authorities found that she had suffered gunshot wounds, while Renard was shot in the leg. They discovered three spent shell casings and a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun at the scene. Renard was rushed to the hospital as he sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg. The autopsy reportedly revealed that Patricia was shot twice. The first shot was reportedly to her left chest that pierced through her lungs and into her heart, while the second shot hit her in the arm before piercing into her right chest. Although the medical examiner suspected a third gunshot wound, it wasn’t confirmed. Patricia’s cause of death was determined to be the fatal injury from the first gunshot, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Forensic Findings and a Witness Statement Led to the Arrest of the Suspect
According to reports, a few minutes into the call, Renard confessed that he had accidentally shot Patricia. When investigators finally arrived at the scene, they questioned Renard, who informed them that he and his wife had been arguing that day, during which she accused him of having an affair. In his statements, he claimed that Patricia threatened him with his gun, and when he struggled to take it away from her, he accidentally shot her during the tussle. Authorities discovered that at the time of the shooting, Patricia’s father, Hardie, was present inside the house. He reportedly suffered from dementia and was unable to provide any information since he was sleeping at the time of the shooting. Police records state that detectives then reviewed the home’s CCTV footage, which captured the sound of three gunshots.

Upon further review of the footage, detectives discovered that at 3:01 am on July 28, 2019, Patricia could be heard saying, “It’s the same thing … over and over again.” Two minutes later, Renard reportedly entered the kitchen, then returned to the bedroom. It also revealed that he walked away in the middle of the CPR without informing the 911 operator before resuming a few minutes later. According to investigative records, officials spoke with Patricia’s friend, Ezra Washington, who alleged that Renard was a controlling partner. Ezra claimed that just two days before July 28, she told him she was done with her marriage and suspected that Renard’s alleged use of steroids was the reason for the lack of intimacy in their marriage, as per reports. Further official records suggest that Ezra also claimed to have spoken to Renard on several calls on July 27.
Reports state that Ezra alleged Renard told him during those calls that he and Patricia were getting a divorce and said she wouldn’t be getting the house. On July 29, 2019, Renard was arrested and charged with murder. His jury trial began on November 28, 2023, during which the prosecution claimed that he had shot his wife intentionally. They pointed out that Patricia was shot twice, which was unlikely to be accidental. On the other hand, the defense emphasized that Renard shot her accidentally during the struggle over the gun. Court records indicate they presented evidence showing that no records existed of the phone calls Ezra claimed had occurred between him and the defendant. Ultimately, on December 6, 2023, after much deliberation, the jury acquitted him of the murder of Patricia.
