In the third episode of ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ season 4, life seems to be progressing with a degree of normalcy for the Thomas family as Unique continues to sow havoc in the dark. While more murders rack up on the streets, the interpersonal relationships between our main characters seem to be strengthening, all except Raq and Kanan, who continue to be at odds as mother and son. However, this feeling of ordinariness is masking the turbulent storm gathering on the horizon, especially with Unique on a crusade. After setting his revenge mission into gear in the last episode, the drug lord is a man possessed by fire, hell-bent on destroying those he believes wronged him. Meanwhile, our main characters remain oblivious to his threat as they carry on their lives like usual. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Unique Hits More Innocents Tied Up in Raq’s Operation
The episode begins with Richard Shek and his wife taking their garbage outside while discussing the former’s nephew. In the previous episode, Marvin caught the boy stealing from the Thomas family’s drug stash. Richard and Sunny are startled when Unique comes out of the shadows and points a gun at them. He takes them both inside and orders them to fill up his bag with drugs and cash. Despite carrying out his orders, Unique pulls the plug on both of them, shooting them through the stomach and leaving them for dead. At Marvin’s home, Jukebox wolfs down food as she explains how the army kept her starved most days. Marvin asks his daughter what her plan is when the officials come knocking, inquiring about why she deserted her post. She says that she has it all figured out. Her father suggests that maybe she should try going back to school.
Kanan talks with his grandmother about the possibility of reconciling with the rest of the family. He wants her to see everyone before she passes away, which seems inevitable based on her doctor’s diagnosis. Joyce reminds her grandson that Raq is still his mom and he should keep in touch with his family. As expected, the army comes calling at Marvin’s doorstep. Jukebox sits down with them to hear out their case. However, she has no plans to return. When they keep persisting with their angle, Jukebox reveals that she is gay. They seem to be taken aback by her words and reconsider their offer. Jukebox wants an Entry-Level Separation, which they are hesitant to accept. However, when she shows no interest in displaying any patriotic zeal, the officials are compelled to grant her wish.
Lou-Lou faces some issues with his new starlet, B-Rilla, who has no place to stay. After signing him as part of his talent roster in the previous episode, Lou-Lou finds his hands full as the singer squats in his cramped apartment. The former is unhappy about the situation, but there is no alternative as B-Rilla has no money beyond the future potential guaranteed to him by his new music producer. In the meantime, Lou-Lou asks him to keep the house clean to the best of his ability. Jukebox clears out her army gear from her bedroom. During her search, she also finds her old Butta jersey, which she discards with the rest. While making his rounds, Marvin learns about Richard and Sunny’s death. He tells Raq all about it, theorizing that maybe their nephew, whom he busted in the earlier episode, had something to do with the incident.
Jukebox Tries to Find Her Place While Lou-Lou Makes New Arrangements
Raq tells Marvin about the Feds spying on him. She tells him that they spotted him meeting up with Stefano Marchetti. He denies those claims, lying to his sister about his connection to the New York Godfather. Raq talks to Uncle Irwin about Richard and Sunny’s passing, promising more security around the place. Elsewhere, Krystal has a scary encounter with Unique outside Kanan’s building. She tells Kanan about it. He reassures her and says there is nothing to worry about. Unconvinced, she insists that he should look for a new apartment. Kanan does not want to add to the expenses, but his girlfriend is persistent. B-Rilla and Lou-Lou sit down with Lowell Gelfand to renegotiate the singer’s deal with the record label. Lou-Lou asks the producer to financially aid B-Rilla with his personal costs, at least for a while. However, tempers flare up, and not much is resolved.
Raq sends Andre a voice message to ask for some info on what is going on with the NYPD. She then sees a letter from Kanan’s school, which states that the boy has been missing classes for a prolonged period. Back in Lowell’s office, the negotiation continues on a sour footing. Eventually, Lowell starts spouting a history lesson about how his Jewish ancestors were oppressed for years. While it does not mean a whole lot to B-Rilla, Lowell appreciates him listening to him. As such, he grants a check for B-Rilla to clear out some of his existing dues and get his life up and running. Elsewhere, Jukebox looks at courses to apply for a college. On her way out, she runs into Twin-Lo, who tells her to stop by a bar with him and his friends later. Marvin tracks down Richard and Sunny’s nephew at an apartment building. He learns that the boy had nothing to do with their death.
Raq runs into Krystal while stopping by Kanan’s apartment, looking for her son. The matriarch appreciates Krystal looking after the apartment. Jukebox and Kanan catch up on each other’s affairs. The latter states that he still doesn’t know where Famous is. Some people claim that he crossed the divide and is a snitch now. However, no one knows for sure. Marvin tracks down Early Tyler at his garage. When asked about the Golden Pavilion massacre, the latter says he has no information about it. Raq attends a massive milestone for Lou-Lou, who steps up in front of a crowd to talk about his experiences in rehab and how close he came to suicide. Lou-Lou expresses the pain he has been carrying with him, all of which he says he started to let go of when he saw himself in the mirror while preparing to hang himself. At that moment, he began to forgive himself.
Unique Strikes Again as An Awkward Family Dinner Gets Underway
Jukebox stops by the bar where Twin-Lo and his friends are gathered. A few seconds into talking with them, she realizes that they are still caught up in the business she has been trying to avoid. She leaves the place after excusing herself for a bathroom break. Lou-Lou and Raq talk frankly about their past issues, deciding to focus on more positive things moving forward. While walking through the streets, Jukebox stops outside a lesbian bar. A charming girl named Mara walks by and invites her in. She has a good time fitting in with the bar’s inhabitants. Unique stops by Early’s garage and hands him the cash he robbed from the Golden Pavilion. The latter tells him that he is playing with fire. Marvin meets up with his goddaughter, Amber, outside her school. She is living in foster care and is super enthused to see her uncle stop by, even if for a brief minute.
Elsewhere, Quan comes rolling by one of Raq’s spots, confronting her directly over Richard and Sunny’s death. She tells him that they need to find the right perpetrator if they are to make an example. However, he remains impatient with Raq’s slowness to get the job done. She meets up with Marvin and decides to use Joaquin’s help to solve the matter with Quan. Kanan keeps Kystal’s word as the couple go out house-hunting. After some searching, they find an apartment they like, only to discover that the owner is a racist. Raq and Marvin talk business with Joaquin, who tells them that they may be interested in connecting with Traymont. On the third attempt, Kanan settles on a house he likes. They pay extra fees to the agent to expedite the paperwork process.
In the meantime, Unique spies on a woman and child from his car. It is the same woman from the previous episode. He leaves something for her in the mailbox. The whole Thomas family gathers for dinner at Joyce’s house. Outside, Kanan is flagged by his mom, who shows him his plummeting attendance records. Kanan states that he is done with school before heading back inside. Meanwhile, Unique jumps O-Cee while he breaks into Kanan’s crib. He takes him at gunpoint while the Thomas family sits down for dinner. Joyce tells them about her cancer. Unfortunately, it does not go down well with Raq, who storms out of the room while the rest of the family processes the news. Kanan feels hurt knowing that he was the one who came up with the idea.
