Power Book III Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: The Way We Were

After the last episode’s events, the fourth episode of ‘Power Book III Raising Kanan’ season 4, titled ‘The Way We Were,’ brings some resolution to certain plotlines while also continuing the mystery game of cat and mouse being played between Unique and the Thomas family. The former’s plan may be inelegant, but it seems to be doing the damage as Raq continues to be baffled by who is after her operations. It seems like the invisibility argument can only extend so far before the truth comes out. However, for the time being, Raq has her hands full with a whole host of other issues as she seeks to establish a new supply chain for heroin. Elsewhere, Kanan makes some headway into stepping away from his mother’s empire and standing up as his own person. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Raq and Marvin Use the Direct Method on Traymont

The episode begins with Marvin attacking Traymont at the Evora Hotel and taking him hostage. Meanwhile, Raq is busy trying to make sense of her mother’s death confession from the previous episode. She says that Joyce is trying to make an exit and leave them without making amends. The latter states that she had a lot of faults but was trying her best all the same. Raq walks out, saying she is still not ready to forgive her mother. Elsewhere, Kanan and Krystal are settling into their new home as O-Cee stops by with a money drop. We don’t know what exactly transpired between O-Cee and Unique from the previous episode. Kanan is aware that some robbery took place in his previous apartment, but something feels off about the whole thing – maybe O-Cee has been flipped by Unique. Jukebox drops in, and Kanan leaves her to catch up with Krystal.

In the meantime, Marvin dishes out some physical punishment for Traymont at an empty swimming pool. The latter pleads with Marvin to stop, but the Thomas family enforcer seems comfortable handling this in a direct way. Raq arrives and asks Traymont to hand out the name of his heroin supplier. At Kanan’s new home, Krystal apologizes to Jukebox for what she did to her at Butta. Although it seems like too messy to come back from, the two girls reach an understanding, especially as they are both important to Kanan. We skip across town to Lou-Lou and B-Rilla, who are recording the latter’s new song at a studio booth. A woman named Imani Okoye introduces herself as the new product manager of B-Rilla. She intends to take B-Rilla’s hip-hop songs into the pop market, but Lou-Lou isn’t sure.

Kanan meets up with Snaps and Pop with the month’s latest cut. They are unhappy that he is short. He explains that the robbery hit him hard and caused him to lose out on some cash. They state that variability is a big no-no in their business, and Kanan must learn to be consistent if he wants to make it big. They promise to hook him up with Quân as a way to help him take a step away from being his mom’s soldier. Kanan is more than happy to accept the deal. Meanwhile, Unique tells Early he is ready to make himself known to the world. However, the time still isn’t right. When Marvin stops by the garage, Unique leaves while Early sees what the house call is about. Marvin offers Early the chance to do his illegal bookmaker duties for them at Corona with some big players.

Jukebox Runs Into Action While Kanan Steps Out of His Mom’s Shadow

Jukebox hangs out at the lesbian bar once more, with Mara keeping her company. A girl named Jackie approaches her for a drink, but she is too surprised to do anything except turn her down. Mara says that eventually, the bar will feel like home, and the people will feel like family. Unhappy at being told to lay low once more, Unique goes on an escapade once more. This time, he meets up with Damon, who states that he has nothing of interest anymore that Unique would want from him. The latter makes it clear that Raq is the one who took his business. It seems like a shaky excuse, but it gets him through Damon’s door. At the same time, Jukebox and Mara’s wonderful evening is cut short when a shady-looking man emerges from the shadows and comes after the latter. Jukebox is thrown to the curb as he forces Mara into the car. We learn that he is Mara’s husband.

Raq and Marvin arrange a meeting with Ishaq, Traymont’s heroin supplier. The Thomas family matriarch makes it clear that she plans to establish a direct supply chain without any middleman involved. Ishaq is pensive about the deal but tells her to come by the next day without any lackeys. At Lowell’s office, Imani and Lou-Lou argue about the latter being dismissive of her. Lowell tells Lou-Lou that even if he is capable of doing all the jobs by himself, he can’t do them all well. Thus, teamwork is the priority. He sets up a date between Imani and Lou-Lou later that evening. Meanwhile, Marvin takes Early to meet Stefano Marchetti, the man offering the job in Corona. While the godfather is happy to forge a working relationship with Early, he makes it evident that Marvin’s neck will be on the chopping block if something goes wrong.

Snaps and Pop make good on their promise as Kanan meets up with Quân. The latter greets Kanan and asks him how he is dealing with the 20% price hike. The boy does not make much of a fuss about it, stating that he is just working harder. He also tells Quân to treat him separately from his mother. Elsewhere, Unique and Damon put on some masks before hitting another operation run by Raq – a Chinese food company. They storm the building and shoot workers willy-nilly. Once the devastation is enough, they make swift exits. Across town, Lou-Lou and Imani have their date at Cafe Vous. The latter states that she has no intention of interfering in Lou-Lou and B-Rilla’s work, especially not the musical aspects. However, she wants to redefine B-Rilla for the masses. She also states that she would have preferred to work with Famous.

Raq Finally Learns the Truth About Andre While Marvin Makes a Mess

Raq and Marvin are called in to respond to the factory Unique and Damon’s hit. They urge the boss, Terry, to toughen up and not to panic before heading out. Sister and brother are clearly worked up over the fact that someone is masterminding these attacks on their stores. Surprisingly, Kanan shows his face at Don Stefano’s restaurant, intending to introduce himself as a business partner of the godfather. However, he is quickly dismissed and sent back home after Stefano clarifies that he only deals with Raq and that Kanan should be grateful to have a loving mom. His intentions are noble, but they may have the opposite effect on the boy, especially with his stubborn streak and his derision for his mother. Elsewhere, Marvin finds out that someone attacked Jukebox while Raq is led to an intimidating black sedan by Ishaq.

Unique continues to plot his revenge against Raq and the Thomas family. He finds a new ally in his cause – Teresa Boselli, Sal’s wife. She urges him to get payback for both of them. Meanwhile, Raq is taken up to a pristine suite at a hotel where she meets with Ishaq’s real boss, Hafiz. The latter tells Raq that setting up another direct supply chain will take more work, which she is up for. Impressed by her, he tells her he will be in touch. Kanan stops by his uncle Lou-Lou’s apartment, questioning his living arrangements with B-Rilla. The conversation eventually turns to Famous as they question where he might be. The NYPD shows up at Raq’s doorstep with news about Andre’s death. Although they don’t officially suspect her of wrongdoing, they are curious how her name pops up in inopportune moments and cases.

Marvin and Jukebox take a ride to Mara and her husband Aaron’s house. The former intends to dish out some pain as payback for his daughter being hurt. However, the whole plan goes awry when Aaron manages to get the upper hand on his aggressor briefly. As a knife bears down on Marvin, Jukebox pulls the trigger and takes out Aaron. Father and daughter run back to their car, speechless about the debacle that just happened. As they drive away, it is pretty evident on their faces that they are in trouble.
