Prevenge Plot Synopsis
A pregnant woman named Ruth keeps having visions of a rope being cut, followed by blood, and the images of a hill next to the coast. She goes to an exotic pet store pretending to be interested in buying a pet for her child and brutally kills the owner, Zabek, by slashing his throat. At home, while lying on her bed, she keeps hearing her unborn child “talking” to her and comforting her. She visits the gynecologist for regular tests, and the doctor tells her that unborn children tend to control the behavior of their mothers. She then goes to a club at night, hiding her pregnancy by wearing a bigger dress. Ruth flirts with the DJ named Dan and pretends to be interested in hooking up. At his house, she violently murders him by cutting his testicles.
Ruth lies in the bathtub and hears the voice of her unborn child, who tells her to remember what “they” did to her husband, imploring her to take revenge. She then pretends to be a job applicant and gets access to a woman named Ella. During the interview, the protagonist bangs Ella’s head on the table, making her the third victim. Later, she keeps looking at videos of a man named Tomas, a rock climbing instructor. She goes to the climbing training center and behaves strangely with him, while subtly hinting that she knows something about him. The gynecologist tells her to be careful and make the right choices for herself and the child, while also indicating that social services don’t take it easy on single mothers.
Ruth then pretends to be a woman looking for a new apartment and kills the owner, named Zac, along with her boyfriend, named Josh. The child speaks to her, expressing happiness over the actions carried out by her mother. Despite the protagonist showing some remorse over her actions, the child’s voice continues to encourage her. She then chases Tomas on the road, but is unable to kill him. Next, she pretends to be working for a children’s charity and knocks on the door of a woman named Len. Despite Lena resisting her attack initially, the protagonist cleverly stabs her to death by distracting her.
The gynecologist tells her that her baby is perfectly healthy and that there are no issues to worry about. The expecting mother insists that the baby is communicating with her and taking control over her mind and body. The doctor warns her that her baby might be born sooner than she thinks. Ruth takes Yoga lessons to help herself calm down, but is not able to control her thoughts about her husband’s death. On Halloween, she wears scary makeup and goes to a club to kill Tomas and to complete her revenge saga to avenge her husband Matt’s death.
Prevenge Ending: Does Ruth Kill Tomas? Why?
Ruth walks into the club, hoping to kill Tomas and finish her revenge story. However, when she sees her target with his pregnant wife, she feels guilty and decides not to kill a child. She heads to the bathroom to throw up, after which her child starts communicating with her again, telling her to finish the job by killing Tomas. When her water breaks, she goes to confront Tomas, who recognizes her intentions of possibly killing him. Tomas apologizes to Ruth for what happened to her husband. He says that Matt’s rope was cut only in order to save lives and that there was no intention of murder. Tomas takes control of the situation by telling the protagonist that her husband wanted to leave her before her death.
After the events at the hospital and realizing that her voice of revenge came from her and not the child, she finds herself in a difficult spot. She hits a seemingly dead end in her revenge saga, and it seems like she has probably given up on the idea of revenge. However, the climax leads to a shocking twist that leads to chaos again. Ruth goes to the hill by the beach, where her husband was found dead in the past. She goes to the edge and finds Tomas there, enjoying a nice view of the beach. Initially, it looks like she is there just to have a genuine conversation with him. However, when he comes closer, the protagonist makes a scary face and lifts her arms up, indicating that she wants to kill him. This is when the screen cuts to black, leaving Tomas’ fate in the balance.
This particular scene in the film can indicate different things based on the interpretation of Ruth’s character. It is a possibility that Ruth was probably imagining herself going to the hill next to the beach and confronting Tomas. She is known to have auditory hallucinations and could’ve probably listened to the “voice” again. Despite the visuals showing us that Ruth went to the cliff, it is a remote possibility that she probably never made it there at all. If she indeed went to the cliff where her husband died, it can be strongly argued that she was there to kill Tomas and complete her revenge saga. At first, from a distance, she hallucinates that her dead spouse, Matt, is waiting for her near the edge of the cliff, but it turns out to be Tomas.
This indicates that Ruth’s perspectives on what’s happening in front of her eyes at that moment are subject to her own mental trauma. The most likely scenario is that Ruth surrendered herself to her inner voice completely and killed Tomas by pushing him from the edge of the cliff. Another point that creates doubt in the viewers’ minds is the fact that Ruth knew about Tomas being there on the cliff. It is likely her imagination that he is standing there, patiently waiting for her to come closer. Tomas isn’t a man who thinks he is guilty, so it is possible that he never showed up there in the first place.
How and when Ruth tracked him down to the beach is a haunting question. This supports the theory that Ruth probably imagined everything. It is also possible that she tried to attack Tomas, but didn’t succeed in killing him. Since the screen cuts to black just as Ruth raises her arms up, it is up to the viewers to interpret whether the protagonist actually achieved revenge or not. Considering the aforementioned arguments, the most likely scenario is that Ruth killed Tomas and completed her story of revenge.
Does Ruth Give Birth? Is the Baby Healthy?
When Ruth goes to the club to attack Tomas, her water breaks after spotting Tomas’ pregnant wife. When she confronts her target, she experiences further labor pain and is taken to the hospital. Though her journey to the hospital is not shown on screen, it can be presumed that Tomas was the one who took her there to ensure that her child is born safely. In a particularly bloody scene, Ruth’s cesarean procedure is shown, after which she holds her newborn baby in her arms. The birth of the child leads to a shocking revelation. When the mother takes a close look at her newborn baby, she realizes that there is nothing wrong with the kid.
Throughout the narrative, she assumes that the child is “speaking” to her and “controlling” her from within the womb, which indicates that the child has some kind of supernatural ability. However, the baby girl is completely normal and shows no signs of any special abilities or health conditions. The fact that the little girl is completely healthy indicates that Ruth has been experiencing auditory hallucinations after the death of her husband. Ruth kisses her child on the forehead after realizing that the young soul is not the monster she thought she would be. This is one of the most important sequences in the film, as it explains all the killings seen in the narrative till that point. The protagonist carries out all the murders based on her own intentions and choices, without any influence from any other entity or person.
Was Matt Killed?
One of the questions that Ruth struggles with is the death of her husband Matt, who died during a rock climbing adventure. Whether or not Matt was murdered is a matter of perspective that is left open to interpretation by the narrative. We only see fragments of Matt’s dead body in the film, and not the whole incident that led to his death. He went for the rock climbing adventure with a group of people that included Zabek, Dan, Len, Tomas, Ella, and Zac. It can be presumed that during the climb, the rope couldn’t hold the weight of so many people. So, in an attempt to survive, one of the others cut the rope, causing Matt to fall to his death. The identity of the one who cut the rope is not explicitly revealed in the narrative, but it can be presumed that it is most likely Tomas, who did it.
This is due to the fact that Tomas was the one in charge of the group and had experience in the art of rock climbing. He would have understood that cutting the rope was the only way to ensure that the rest survived the ordeal. So, in a way, Matt was killed, but it cannot be classified as “murder.” No one in the group had any motivation to kill Matt, as there is no indication of any past grudges. Matt’s death was a tragic incident that was caused by survival instinct and a form of self-defence, and not due to vengeful or preplanned murder. Tomas makes it clear to Ruth that no one in the group is to be blamed for Matt’s fate, as anyone in that position would have probably done the same to survive. This makes Ruth’s revenge journey even more complex as it emerges from a false sense of justice based on an assumed story.
Is Ruth Dead or Alive?
Ruth’s fate is not explicitly shown towards the end of the narrative. As she raises her arms up to strike down Tomas, the story comes to an end. Ruth’s fate rests on herself and Tomas. It can be presumed that Ruth most probably killed Tomas and lived. She doesn’t show any hesitation in killing the others before Tomas, so there’s no reason to believe that she would treat her latest victim any differently. Once she gets rid of Tomas’ body, she will most likely go back to be with her newborn child. Due to her keen sense of revenge, it is highly unlikely that she will let all her efforts so far go to waste. Another possibility here is Tomas defending himself during Ruth’s attack and killing her in the process.
Tomas clearly has time to react to any moves of aggression, and he is someone who is experienced in the art of survival. This hints at the possibility that Tomas might have either killed Ruth or at least neutralized her in the process of survival. This would mean that the main character’s revenge quest led to her own death. Both possibilities are likely, as the situation seems to be equal for both parties involved. However, the spirit of the narrative hints at the possibility of Ruth’s survival as a more likely scenario. In conclusion, it can be said that Ruth’s willingness to be with her daughter will propel her towards the future.
