Created by Gustavo Lipsztein, Netflix’s ‘Radioactive Emergency,’ originally titled ‘Emergência Radioativa,’ reimagines the true story of the Goiânia accident of 1987. When a capsule containing significant amounts of cesium-137 is left unattended at an abandoned clinic and eventually discovered by two men, a chain reaction of unimaginable proportions begins to take shape. Before long, hundreds of people find themselves struggling with symptoms of radiation poisoning, and the CNEN is pushed into overdrive. With every episode of the Brazilian docudrama series, we gain more insight into how the disaster and the response to it might have transpired. Despite the CNEN’s best measures, the results turn out to be much more severe than anyone could have predicted, and promise to alter the town’s fate forever. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Radioactive Emergency Plot Recap
‘Radioactive Emergency’ begins with Carlinhos and Lucio making their way to an abandoned clinic known as Goias Radiotherapy Institute, where lies a massive capsule made of what appears to be lead. Hoping to make a quick buck, Carlinhos sells it to Evenildo, a local scrapyard owner, who soon discovers that the capsule glows blue at night. Believing it to be harmless, he brings the thing home, where his brother, Joao, shows it off to his young daughter, Celeste. As days pass, however, the entire family ends up sick, and Evenildo’s wife, Antonia, believes that the capsule is cursed. Together with her son Raimundo, she drags the capsule to a local hospital in the hopes of getting her illness fixed, but the doctors avoid things entirely, leaving the capsule on a chair for almost a week.
As every patient in the hospital begins exhibiting symptoms of radiation poisoning, the doctors grow concerned about the capsule and dial up a nuclear physicist named Marcio for help. Marcio is in town for his father’s birthday, but when he discovers the abnormal readings on a scintillation detector, he realizes that a calamity has descended on the town. After locating the capsule minutes before one of the nurses gets it tossed into the river, he calls for a mass evacuation and alerts the CNEN, who set up an emergency center at the Olympic stadium. Before long, Evenildo and his entire family are brought into the treatment center, only for the CNEN to learn that the contamination might have spread. Amidst local planning and all-around lockdowns, the CNEN finds itself looking at hundreds of people at risk of a slow, painful death.
Among the most severely affected by the radiation poisoning is Celeste, Joao, and Catarina’s daughter, who is revealed to have ingested some of the cesium flakes. Worse, it appears that the family may have washed the thing off and sent some particles into the river, which causes the CNEN to abandon everything and begin a sweep of all major waterbodies. In the meantime, Catarina is cleared and released from the center, but struggles to even contact, much less meet, the rest of her family. As their health worsens, the government begins looking for alternative treatment methods, which involve international help, both in the form of doctors and medicine. While screening the local areas, Marcio himself gets contaminated and is put into quarantine. With the patients getting sicker by the day, the CNEN realizes that it needs to throw everything it has into the case before it is too late.
Radioactive Emergency Ending: Are Celeste and Antonia Dead?
‘Radioactive Emergency’ ends with the tragic deaths of Celeste and Antonia, who die after battling radiation poisoning for weeks. Even though they receive an experimental treatment and, for a moment, appear to be on the path of recovery, their conditions destabilize almost in sync, leading to the first two confirmed casualties under government supervision. The fact that Antonia is the one who first alerts authorities about the crisis makes her passing all the more saddening, while also speaking to her grit and courage in the face of adversities. Perhaps the worst part about all of this is that neither Celeste nor Antonia are separated from their loved ones by several walls and layers of security, even moments before their deaths.
When Evenildo leaves his bed to meet with his wife, it almost feels like he knows the fate that awaits her. Fate, however, has different plans, as he has to watch from a distance as Antonia helplessly convulses, and eventually breathes her last. Celeste’s final moments are left up to our imagination, as it becomes almost too heartbreaking to watch. There is also the additional tragedy of her mother, Catarina, not being allowed to even see, much less touch, her daughter due to the contamination risk at hand. Despite her numerous attempts to reach out to the authorities, Catarina is ultimately failed by the system, and the next time she sees her daughter is heartbreakingly in a casket. That is not the end of it, either, as now she has to face public paranoia about the risk of contamination posed by Celeste’s corpse.
Following their passing, Celeste and Antonia are put into a gigantic casket, one likely sealed with several layers of insulation to prevent a radiation leak. This, however, doesn’t seem enough to convince the locals, as they begin protests right in the middle of their burial ceremony. Things eventually get heated, and some protestors resort to pelting stones at the CNEN and the caskets, which reveals just how quickly circumstances can sever people’s connection with their humanity. While Catarina has to witness all of these horrors with her own eyes, Evenildo and Joao are not even allowed to exit their rooms from the point they last saw their family. Although they are ever-increasingly at risk of meeting a similar fate, both find themselves withering away, as the people they cherish the most are now gone.
Who is Responsible For the Tragedy? Who Goes to Jail?
Ultimately, there is no clear or singular answer as to who is to blame for the Goiânia tragedy, as the show illustrates how a series of major and minor missteps led to a snowballing effect that nearly spread the radiation all the way to Rio. However, the original mistake is that of the Goias Radiotherapy Institute, which gave the CNEN wrong information about their disposal procedures. Had their original report about the cobalt machine detailed the whereabouts of the remaining cesium contained, all of this could have been averted. As it stands, however, the responsibility is also partially shared by the CNEN, which failed to follow through on the institute’s report and allowed a site as important as that to turn into ruin over the years.
While some attempt to pin the blame on Carlinhos and Lucio for extracting the lead capsule, or on Evenildo and Joao for bringing the thing to their home and playing with it for weeks, both accusations come off as misguided. In reality, the system’s failure to bring together safety measurements or raise awareness about such hazards is precisely what leads to common people such as Evenildo to lower their guard. The system’s flaws extend to how the infected people are treated, as they are not only refused the answers they deserve, but are often also subjected to inhuman conditions and discrimination by doctors and nurses themselves.
Although the Goiânia incident is a complicated situation that elicits various responses from various people, the fact remains that Antonia and everyone else are victims of a larger, systemic failure. Towards the end of the show, Orenstein holds a press conference, where the Goias Radiotherapy Institute is declared to be the sole guilty party in this entire fiasco. Although Orenstein himself wishes to hold the CNEN accountable, his honesty is rebuffed by higher-ups, who are more eager to bury the incident and return to a facade of normalcy. A montage of real-life footage and information reveals that five people from the institute were found guilty of manslaughter.
Does Carlinhos Survive the Surgery? Do Evenildo and Joao Return Home?
At the end of the show, an experimental treatment, followed by a high-risk surgery, saves Carlinhos’ life. Although the hospital is initially ill-equipped to deal with the surgery due to the time constraints each doctor faces at the face of a contamination risk, this doesn’t stop them from giving things a go. A miracle happens in the end when an additional batch of surgeons steps in, taking care of the operation in time and saving Carlinhos’ life. As the person who first encounters the capsule and unintentionally starts this entire saga, Carlinhos is deeply tied to the larger narrative of ‘Radioactive Emergency,’ and saving his life comes as a personal victory for the CNEN. This is crystallized in the form of the letter he receives back from his mother, which is read out by the doctors in one of the most emotionally resonant moments of the show.
Although Evenildo and Joao ultimately survive the poisoning and are cleared to return to a normal life, they find the world outside nigh unrecognizable. To begin with, their house and its surrounding regions are completely demolished because of being a contamination hotspot, which means that all the memories of Antonia and Celeste are essentially turned to dust. The only thing that remains is a photo of Celeste that was retrieved and decontaminated by the CNEN, and while it is given to Catarina in one piece, it is hardly enough to move past the disaster she and her family have endured. In the end, it is Evenildo and Raimundo who come together and reassert the value of family. While their homes might be gone, the only thing they can do is stick together and start from scratch in a world that might never return to its original state.
Does Marcio go Back to Rio? What’s Next For Him?
After the crisis is contained, several tonnes of contaminated material are put into concrete blocks, sealed shut, and then put deep inside the ground, never to be brought up again. While this cannot exactly be called a victory for the CNEN, they are still successful in minimizing the casualties as much as possible. Their biggest help in all of this is none other than Marcio, who is technically an outsider to the system, but goes on to become a hero. Fittingly, at the end, Orenstein offers him a job at the CNEN headquarters in Rio, acknowledging how he can be a powerhouse for the team. This also syncs up with how he was always planning on returning home to Rio, except this time, he is not coming back as just a professor, but as someone who promises to change the system from the inside out.
Marcio’s return to normal life also means that he is finally able to reconnect with his partner and their unborn child. In a way, their relationship serves as an anchor point in the story, and it is only because Bianca’s resolve doesn’t break once throughout the five episodes that Marcio is able to save as many lives as he did. After it is confirmed that he is no longer contaminated due to the dog bite, he returns home with the promise of a fresh start. However, while things are looking up for him, the same cannot necessarily be said about the other survivors, who risk losing the government’s support. With their families severed, and their house and possessions taken away, people like Evenildo serve as a grim reminder of the all-consuming nature of tragedy, be it natural or human-made.
