Raising Kanan: Is Cafe Vous a Real Club?

Season 4 of ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ brings us back into the folds of the South Jamaica neighborhoods as Kanan continues his journey into the person we know him from ‘Power.’ After the shocking ending of season 3, episode 1 of the fourth season jumps straight into the thick of the action, providing more details and answers to our burning questions. It feels familiar to go through the same environments that have become so resonant with the series, including Cafe Vous. It has been a regular destination since season 3’s events, providing a deeper insight into Lou-Lou’s character and the music scene that is so pivotal to the series. However, it also plays a vital role in fleshing out the world and the era.

Cafe Vous is a Fictional Club That Adds to Lou-Lou’s Storyline

‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ introduces a number of fictional locales throughout its various seasons. These places either add to the world-building aspect of the series or have an important relation to specific elements of the plot and characters. Cafe Vous fits more into the second category. It is a fictional club crafted by Sascha Penn, which brings more clarity and depth to Lou-Lou’s ongoing storyline of trying to break away from Raq’s world. We have known for quite a while that Lou-Lou is tired of living a life dictated by his sister, who is wrapped up in the dangers of the underworld. While he started the series as a loyal foot soldier who does not question anything, he has undergone a radical shift in his thinking and wants to have nothing to do with his family. To that end, Cafe Vous presents an opportunity to have a life outside Raq’s circle.

The club was first introduced in season 3 as a place that needed revitalization. Lou-Lou sees this as a golden opportunity to have something of his own. His previous plans of succeeding with his record company were also motivated by a desire to break the bonds shackling him to his sister. While it didn’t work out exactly as planned, Cafe Vous presented another shot at the same dream. However, in season 3, we see a progressive decline in Lou-Lou’s mental state as he struggles with the guilt of his past life and the inability to move forward. He quickly spirals out of control and becomes a liability to the Thomas family and to Raq’s needs. In his desperate state, Cafe Vous is one of the few things that helps him remain sane and grounded on his two feet.

The first episode of season 4 jumps back in time to explore how Unique survived Ronnie’s murder attempt. We go back to the past and see Lou-Lou in the club’s halls, enjoying the familiarity and the music playing on stage. Still, there are signs of his later deterioration as he continues to indulge his alcohol abuse. Meanwhile, Kanan, Jukebox, and Iesha also watch from one of the club’s filled-out tables as Famous captivates the audience with his music. It feels familiar and warm to return to the club’s cozy interiors and to get a glimpse into what life was like before chaos hit the streets at the end of season 3. The club will likely continue to play an essential role moving forward. However, it remains a fictional abode with no connections to reality.
