In March 2010, a quiet day in Kansas City, Missouri, turned into a tragedy when 42-year-old Randy Eugene Stone was found dead in his office. It sent shockwaves through the community and left his loved ones completely shattered. The investigation revealed hidden emotions and a complex web of strained relationships. The case is revisited in the episode titled ‘Sinful Nature’ of Investigation Discovery’s ‘Deadly Affairs: Betrayed by Love.’ It carefully examines the relationships at the center of the tragedy and the clues that led officials to the killer. It also features interviews with the detective who worked on the case and Randy’s niece.
Randy Stone Was Found Dead From a Gunshot Wound in His Office
Leonard Eugene and Clara Bonine Stone were overjoyed when they welcomed their son, Randy Eugene Stone, into the world on June 14, 1967. He grew up in a loving household in Kansas City, Missouri, and had two beloved sisters, Shannon and Sherri. Unfortunately, the family suffered a profound loss when Randy’s 3-month-old sister, Sherri, passed away on February 26, 1970. Randy was often described by his loved ones as someone disciplined and dedicated. After graduating from Northeast High School in 1986, he followed his desire to serve his country and joined the US Marines, where he served for 4 years during Desert Storm. Randy then began working for the Army Reserves before moving on in March 1990. Ultimately, he became an independent Insurance Agent for Farmers Insurance in Independence, MO, in 1997.

As a man of faith, Randy was a proud member of the New Hope Baptist Church, where he occasionally provided financial advice. In his free time, he enjoyed playing various sports. Randy met Teresa Greenawalt when he was just a child, since they both grew up on the same block. After his return from the Marines in 1990, they reportedly began dating. After about 7 months, Randy and Teresa finally tied the knot on October 13, 1990. In 1991, the couple welcomed their son Michael Stone into their lives. Just two years later, Randy and Teresa gave birth to their daughter, Miranda Stone. Teresa also worked with Randy in his office, but on March 31, 2010, she went out around 2 pm because she had an appointment. When she reportedly returned around 5 pm, she found the door locked and the blinds closed.
Reports state that Teresa then found Randy lying on the floor in the copy room with blood around his head. When officials arrived at the scene following the 911 call, Randy was unfortunately declared dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Upon searching, they discovered a .40 caliber spent shell casing at the scene, but found no murder weapon. Since they didn’t find any signs of struggle, they deduced that Randy possibly knew the shooter. Additionally, detectives noted that a large sum of cash on Teresa’s desk remained untouched, indicating it was not a robbery. They further discovered a torn-up handwritten letter in a wastebasket in Randy’s office. The autopsy reportedly revealed that he was shot at point-blank range, and his cause of death was determined to be a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
A Torn-up Letter Pointed the Investigators to a Possible Secret Affair
At the scene, Teresa informed the officials that she was reportedly out on an appointment since 2 pm on March 31, 2010, and didn’t return until 5 pm. According to reports, she initially called out for Randy before finding him in the copy room. When authorities checked her alibi, they reportedly confirmed it from the places Teresa visited and the people she met that day. Police records state that the detective grew suspicious when they found a torn-up personal letter from Teresa’s trash can in the office, which seemed to be a love or birthday letter. As they interviewed people from Randy and Teresa’s church, they learned of a rumor of an inappropriate relationship between Teresa and their pastor, David Love, as per the records.

Investigative reports suggest that officials also learned that Randy owned a .40 caliber gun, similar to the weapon that was used to kill him. However, court records state that when Teresa was asked about the location of the weapon, she denied knowing anything. When questioned about the letter, she claimed in her statements that it was a secret admiration note she allegedly tore up to hide from Randy. When David was interrogated, he reportedly refused to answer and got a lawyer. According to reports, he then resigned as a pastor and moved to South Carolina. Court records indicate that authorities then checked David’s cell phone location, which eventually provided a tower ping within 2 miles of Randy’s office around the time of the murder on that fateful day.
Officials Arrested the Killer and the Conspirator Based on Confession and Mobile Data
As per official records, when Teresa was brought in for the second interview, she confessed that the letter in the office was from David. In her statements, she reportedly admitted to having an affair with David for 10 years. Reports state that she told the detectives that David admitted to killing Randy with David’s gun. According to investigative reports, one of Randy’s coworkers and friends informed them that Teresa was allegedly asking about Randy’s life insurance payout shortly after his death, which amounted to approximately $800,000. As investigators dug deeper, they reportedly discovered an exchange of images and emails between David and Teresa, confirming their affair.

Reports state that Randy had also become concerned about certain missing funds from the church, which allegedly bore David’s signature. Police records indicate that David had communicated the same in an email to David on March 17, 2010. Ultimately, David was arrested and extradited back to Missouri in November 2010, where he was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Teresa was arrested in May 2011 and charged with conspiracy to commit murder, owing to the fact that, despite knowing about the murder, she didn’t provide any information to the police.
While David Passed Away in Custody, Teresa Appears to Have Been Released From Prison
Following his arrest, David had initially pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and armed criminal action in January 2011. His jury trial date was set for December of that same year, but he avoided the trial by entering a guilty plea. David reportedly pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action on November 9, 2011. He was sentenced on the same day to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Similarly, Teresa was set to face a jury trial in April 2012, but she avoided it by entering into a plea agreement with the prosecution.

According to reports, Teresa pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder on April 30, 2012. Ultimately, she was sentenced to 8 years in prison on June 15, 2012. Reports state that David was set to become eligible for parole in 2036. He was serving his time at the Jefferson City Correction Center in Jefferson City, Missouri, when he passed away on March 25, 2024, at the age of 63. As of writing, Teresa appears to have been released from prison and is likely maintaining a low profile.
