In ‘Reporting Live,’ the protagonist Sandhya Yadav is an investigative journalist who is on the hunt for a big story. Prioritizing her career above all else, she lives on her own with her beloved pet dog, Zoey. Apart from a grandmother who lives in a different city, she has no direct family, but finds a home away from home with her cameraman and best friend, Vinod Sharma, and his family. When the two reporters stumble across a conspiracy revolving around an illegal sand mining racket, they go after the story with full gas, eager to expose the truth about the exploitative and destructive sand mafia.
However, it soon becomes apparent that the two are punching above their weight, as influential and powerful puppeteers prove to be behind the entire operation. As a result, the two constantly become victims of intimidation tactics deployed to scare them into silence. Eventually, the danger of these underhanded tactics ends up reaching Sandhya and Vinod’s homes as well. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Zoey Falls Victim to the Mafia Gang’s Ruthless Scare Tactics
Sandhya and Vinod attract the unwanted attention of the sand mafia from the very beginning of their investigation. The criminal ring doesn’t take many precautions to hide its illegal operations of sand mining. As a result, it’s fairly easy to document their actions and collect proof against them. However, what the syndicate lacks in discretion, it makes up for in fearmongering. Thus, the reporters become victims of harassment by local goons when they try to leave the village of Visargaon. Yet, the two refuse to back down even after their own lives had been put at risk. Likewise, when outside pressure compels their boss, Shyam, to take them off the case, they continue their investigation on their own time.

Eventually, Sandhya and Vinod dig into the mafia’s operations enough to uncover a paper trail linking the racket to L Velraj, the founder of Golden Sky Group. This is when the stakes begin to rise significantly. The industry of illegal sand mining remains relatively unaffected even after the media reports on its base-level operations. This is because they have powerful benefactors, such as Golden Sky Group. Thus, if Sandhya and Vinod expose Velraj, it could capsize the conspiracy from the very top. As a result, the sand mafia grows bolder in their intimidation tactics. Instead of the reporters themselves, the unseen enemy begins to target their families and loved ones. The first sign of it arrives when Vinod’s daughter, Ira, goes missing from school.
Eventually, after hours of restless searching, the parents find the kid back home, dropped off by people who identified themselves to her as Vinod’s friends. These kidnappers leave a note with her that contains a warning: Curiosity killed the dog. Upon reading this message, both Vinod and Sandhya instantly realize who else the mafia has targeted. They rush to the journalist’s apartment, where they find Zoey hanging from the ceiling fan of Sandhya’s bedroom. The sand mafia kills the innocent, faultless dog, likely in direct compliance with Velraj’s order, as a clear threat to the journalist. Worse yet, when the reporter attempts to contact the authorities about the incident, to seek justice and personal protection, she is ridiculed out of the police station. Still, even in the face of such an enormous personal loss, Sandhya refuses to let her voice be silenced.
