Richard Stanley’s ‘Dunwich’ Reportedly Back in the Works

Years after its inception, the next installment in Richard Stanley’s Lovecraftian horror sagas is finally materializing! Moviedelic has learned that ‘Dunwich,’ which was first announced in 2020, is reportedly back in development. The project will start filming in Rhode Island in June 2025. The film will serve as a follow-up to the 2019 Nicolas Cage-led movie ‘Color Out of Space.’ Stanley wrote the screenplay based on H. P. Lovecraft’s horror novella ‘The Dunwich Horror.’

In the original film, Nathan Gardner moves his family to his late father’s farm following the mastectomy of his wife, Theresa. Their lives are disrupted when a meteorite crashes near their well, releasing a mysterious, glowing color that contaminates their water supply. As the strange material begins to cause bizarre and horrifying mutations, including Theresa and Jack merging into a grotesque mass, the family descends into chaos. Lavinia and Benny’s attempts to escape fail, with the latter absorbed by the “Color” and Nathan spiraling into madness. A hydrologist named Ward Phillips returns to the farm, witnessing the full, alien nature of the Color and the devastation it brings. Ultimately, Ward survives the catastrophic events, left to reflect on the incomprehensible cosmic force that ravaged the land.

The upcoming movie takes place seven years after the events in ‘Color Out of Space’ in a futuristic version of the Lovecraftian city of Arkham, where the ominous presence of the Old Ones threatens to resurface. The narrative follows Wilbur Whateley, born under strange and unsettling circumstances to a disfigured albino mother and a mysterious, unknown father. As he grows unnaturally fast, maturing into adulthood within a decade, he is heavily influenced by his grandfather, who immerses him in dark rituals and the arcane study of witchcraft.

‘Dunwich’ is set in the same universe as ‘Color Out of Space,’ sparking speculation about a possible return of Nicolas Cage in this second film in a trilogy of Lovecraftian adaptations. While Cage is the only actor currently being discussed, it won’t be surprising to see other surviving characters from the 2019 film in the upcoming movie as the narrative unfolds in the same fictional city of Arkham, Massachusetts.

Rhode Island is a new location as far as the film series is concerned, especially since the original movie was shot in Portugal. The state previously hosted the production of projects such as ‘Hocus Pocus 2,’ which shares thematic similarities with ‘Dunwich,’ and ‘The Wrong Todd.’
