Who Plays Janalice and Preá in Rivers of Fate?

Netflix’s ‘Rivers of Fate’ is a crime thriller show in which the viewers are transported to the brutal realities of human trafficking in Amazon’s Pará region. Originally titled ‘Pssica,’ the Portuguese show revolves around three parallel storylines that collide in the face of mounting abuse. Janalice, a teenage girl, falls victim to abduction and gets sold into the nightmarish life of sex trafficking. Around the same time, Mariangel, an older woman with a dark past, loses her family to a nighttime attack from reckless river pirates.

One of these river pirates, Preá, ends up becoming infatuated with Janalice as he and his crew facilitate the transport of the abducted girls to a farmhouse. As such, a domino effect of revenge and rescue is put into motion. Despite the glaring differences between their perspectives and narratives, both Janalice and Preá play a crucial role in depicting the different realities of the cycle of human trafficking.

Domithila Cattete Makes Her On-Screen Debut With Janalice in Rivers of Fate

Janalice’s character embodies a unique sense of naivety that reflects her young age alongside a fierce tenacity that lends toward her survivor nature. Actress Domithila Cattete brings these foundational characterizations of the character to the screen through her moving performance. Hailing from Belém, a city in Pará, Brazil, the young actress has some experience with local theater work. However, with ‘Rivers of Fate,’ she takes on a new medium and all the new challenges that come with it. Additionally, like many other members of the cast, she also had to learn a new language to deliver her performance with the level of authenticity it required.

Reportedly, Cattete received help in this aspect of the role, alongside several others, from Fatima Toledo, the acting coach involved in the project. In a conversation with Vogue, conducted in Portuguese, the debuting actress spoke about her experiences. She shared, “The preparation was very intense. Janalice is a character (who is) very close to me. I saw in it something very similar to me: the search for freedom.” She added, “(Janalice) is one character who does not want to be an angel or a victim, but a woman who wants to live her way.” As such, if Cattete’s attention to character work and her captivating performance in ‘Rivers of Fate’ is anything to go by, the actress likely has a bright future ahead of her, filled with intriguing new projects.

Lucas Galvino Plays Preá AKA Jonas in Rivers of Fate

Leading the project alongside Domithila Cattete and veteran actress Marleyda Soto, Lucas Galvino takes on the role of Preá, bringing the nuanced and complicated river pirate to the screen. For the role, Galvino also benefited from the presence of acting coach Fatima Toledo, who helped him better understand his character. As a result, he was able to tap into even the more complex and daunting aspects of Preá, authentically bringing his character to life. “The preparation with her was thorough, seeing things of mine that approached the character,” The actor said in Portuguese in an interview with Cine Set. “It turned out to be a discovery in which she told others that Fatima was a witch for being able to access invisible things. Really impressive and very strong.”

The actor is best known for his work in other Brazilian/Portuguese projects. Galvino forayed into the film industry with the short film ‘Vando Aka Vedita’ in 2017. Eventually, by 2022, he made his feature film debut in the comedy project ‘A Vida São Dois Dias.’ Some of his most notable performances since then include films like ‘Greice’ in which he plays Naldo, and ‘The Male Gaze: Shadows on Skin,’ where he embodies the character of Rafa. He also has multiple TV shows under his belt, including the 2022 telenovela ‘Mar do Sertão’ and ‘Guerreiros do Sol.’ ‘Rivers of Fate’ arrives as an exciting new addition to the actor’s filmography, which promises great things in the future.
