Originally titled ‘Pssica,’ the Portuguese Netflix show’ Rivers of Fate’ tells a story of exploitation and survival. Season one of the crime thriller centers around a teenager named Janalice, who becomes a victim of sex trafficking. Throughout her subjugation, the young girl continues to fight for a chance of freedom despite the bleak reality of her situation. Two individuals, her godfather, Amadeu, an ex-cop, and Jonas, a besotted river pirate, continuously try to save the girl from her predicament.
Yet, in the end, it’s Mariangel, a mother who, coincidentally enough, is exacting revenge from Janalice’s abusers, that becomes an instrumental helpline for the protagonist. Even though the season comes to a conclusive end, the sobering narrative explored in the show is bound to keep the fans engaged. However, in the absence of a confirmed renewal, ‘Rivers of Fate’ season 2 only remains a tentative possibility. Thus, according to previous patterns, one can speculate that a possible second season might arrive sometime in late 2026 to early 2027.
Rivers of Fate Season 2 Could Explore Janalice’s Journey Toward Healing
Season 1 of ‘Rivers of Fate’ charts a grim story about Janalice’s experiences as she’s entrenched in a dark world of abuse and exploitation. It explores the various facets of the societal factors as well as the criminal elements that contribute towards a culture that makes young women vulnerable to such heinous crimes. Yet, in the wake of such brutal storytelling, it also ends on a hopeful note, finding freedom and safety for our protagonist and her closest friend, Luzia. As a result, the narrative not only serves an educational purpose but also relays a story about hope and optimism. These aspects of the show remain influenced by its connection to its source material, Edyr Augusto’s eponymous novel.
However, since the novel is a standalone, an additional season would have to undertake a completely original path, introducing a new avenue for the central tale. Therefore, season 2 can build upon this thematic foundation and present the story about Janalice’s future experiences as a survivor of sex trafficking. In doing so, the show can further underline the reality of sex trafficking’s impact on the lives of the victims, this time through the lens of a survivor in recovery. This would also allow the story to delve into Janalice’s future in the wake of her decision to firmly shut the door on her traumatic past by choosing to cut ties with her family and home village. As a result, interesting storylines revolving around PTSD, grief, and ultimately healing can be incorporated into the protagonist’s tale.
Rivers of Fate Season 2 Could Bring New Characters Into the Mix
Various characters meet their demise at the end of ‘Rivers of Fate’ season 1. This is particularly true for the antagonists who directly took part in the abuse of Janalice and the other girls. However, more positive characters like Zé Do Boi (Maycon Douglas) and Amadeu (Sandro Guerra) also meet their ends, while the more morally nuanced personalities Pedro and Jonas, aka Preá (Lucas Galvino), also bite the bullet. Therefore, since these characters will likely not return for a potential season 2, there’s plenty of room for new faces to enter the story. This is particularly true if the show decides to stick with Janalice’s future as the central narrative.
In such an event, the narrative would inevitably end up including new characters who might form the friendship group or support system around the protagonist. Alternatively, a focus on Janalice’s narrative will also likely result in the return of some of the original cast, including lead actress Domithila Cattete. Marleyda Soto, who plays Mariangel, can also be expected to reprise her role since there’s a chance her and Janalice’s storylines will remain intertwined following their escape from Cayenne, French Guiana. Similarly, Sendí Baré might also make a comeback as Luzia, whose survival added to the overall hopeful ending of season 1. Nonetheless, apart from these predictions, there’s little indication of what the cast of a potential season 2 might look like.
Rivers of Fate Can Further Explore the Reality of Trafficking in Season 2
In ‘Rivers of Fate’ season 1, the narrative underlines the bitter reality of the universal nature of Janalice’s predicament. Even though she leads the story as a protagonist, it’s evident in every step of her tale that she isn’t the only one suffering from such cruel circumstances. At almost every point of her subjugation, there are other young girls and women who have become victims of the same abusers. In fact, on multiple occasions, this unfortunate shared experience and solidarity between the women help Janalice in her survival. The camaraderie feeds her hope for a better future and allows her a fighting chance on various occasions. Luzia’s storyline is the most evident example of this theme.
Therefore, it’s possible that season 2 might choose to focus on this aspect of the show by shifting the emphasis to another young girl who might not have been as lucky as Janalice in escaping her circumstances. If the story takes this route, the narrative can further needle the horrifying reality of sex trafficking and its chilling prevalence in modern society. This can see a return for storylines revolving around the Coc d’Or club or the Tabaco gang and its contemporaries. By further engaging in such storylines, the show can continue to underline the dangers and yet unexplored realities of the human/sex trafficking crimes that take place in the Amazon. Ultimately, depending on which aspect of the thematic narrative the show is eager to highlight, a potential season 2 can go down a variety of different avenues.
