However, the beautiful life of the 51-year-old came to a sudden end when he was shot outside his home in Evansville, Indiana. The investigation soon unfolded into a far more complex and troubling story, drawing attention to his final hours and one of the people closest to him. The case comes under the spotlight in ABC’s ’20/20: One Last Call’ that delves deeper into the details of the case, including interrogation clips and detailed timelines. The episode further presents emotional accounts of his loved ones and the law enforcement officials who helped bring the truth to light.

Robert Doerr Was Shot in His Driveway Moments After Returning From Work

Robert Francis Doerr II, affectionately known as Robbie, arrived as a bundle of joy in the lives of Robert Francis and Marlene Irene Doerr on June 22, 1967. He grew up in Evansville, Indiana, where he was always surrounded by the immeasurable love and support of his parents. Robert had always been quite close to his sisters, Tracy MacGregor and Angie Roybal. According to his loved ones, Robert was a kind individual who always helped others in times of need. After completing his education, he decided to follow in the footsteps of his dear father and other family members. It led him to join the Evansville Fire Department sometime in 1991. Simultaneously, Robert served full-time at the local Taco John’s for 15 years whenever he had days off.

Robert gained valuable experience in the fire department, which paved the path for him to become a member of the International Association of Firefighters Local 357. When he wasn’t immersed in his work, he enjoyed activities like bowling and fishing. Sometime in his adulthood, Robert got into a relationship, which helped him welcome his daughter, Lindsey Doerr, into the world. After parting ways with his daughter’s mother, he thought he had found a source of support when he met Elizabeth “Becky” Fox at the fast-food restaurant where he worked. After 11 years of a strong friendship, Robert and Elizabeth’s connection blossomed, leading to their marriage in 2018. Besides that, Robert loved his stepsons, Dustin Barrett, Nathaniel Guthrie, and Taylor Barrett.

On February 26, 2019, Robert had just returned to his home at 2728 Oakley Street in Evansville and parked his truck in the driveway when he was shot multiple times. Around 7 pm, officials received a 911 call from Elizabeth, reporting that her husband had been shot. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Robert lying on the sidewalk and noted that he still had a pulse. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after from a gunshot wound to the head. Although no shell casings were recovered, detectives discovered a projectile in the street. The autopsy reportedly revealed that Robert also had two gunshot wounds to the back and another to his neck/shoulder area. His cause of death was determined to be multiple fatal gunshot wounds. The report also disclosed that he was likely shot using a Taurus Judge or a similar type of gun.

Missing Call Log, Digital Evidence, and a Confession Helped Officials Crack the Case

Investigators first questioned Elizabeth, who informed them that she was the only one present at home when she heard multiple gunshots. When they searched Robert’s home, they reportedly discovered a letter that Robert wrote for Elizabeth. According to reports, Robert had written comments like “I see his text on your phone” and “ever since he came back into your life,” suggesting he suspected Elizabeth of being unfaithful. When forensic experts checked her cellphone, they discovered that she had received a call around 6:46 pm and spoke on the phone with that number until around 6:51 pm, which was minutes before Robert was shot. The experts found that the call record was likely deleted from the logs, according to reports. The phone number was then traced back to Larry Ali Richmond Sr., who was Elizabeth’s sister, Amanda’s fiancé.

When authorities questioned Elizabeth about the call, she initially denied it. However, she later changed her account and claimed that she deleted the call because Larry had previously been in trouble. In her statements, she claimed that she didn’t want the detectives to think that she was having an affair with him. In June 2021, experts received multiple hits from Larry’s cell phone location data, revealing that he was present near the crime scene, around the time of Robert’s murder. Further investigation helped uncover surveillance footage from a nearby gas station, which captured Larry shortly after the shooting. Court records state that the information about the Taurus Judge led detectives to Larry Richmond Jr. When he was questioned, Larry Jr. admitted to stealing the gun and giving it to his father, Larry, a few days later.

In his statements, Larry Jr. claimed to have seen Larry and Elizabeth kissing. Another CCTV footage from Larry’s neighbor’s home captured him burying some items, where investigators later discovered guns. Larry was then out on probation after serving 22 years of his 45-year prison term for an unrelated murder charge. Hence, he was not allowed to be in possession of firearms. In March 2019, Larry was arrested and charged with four counts of felony possession. Reports indicate that during his incarceration, he confessed to shooting Robert to an inmate, who was a police informant. In July 2022, Elizabeth was arrested and charged with perjury. By the following month, Larry was indicted on the charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, while Elizabeth faced charges of aiding murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Elizabeth and Larry Are Incarcerated at Different State Prisons Today

Following her arrest, Elizabeth pleaded not guilty to perjury, and the charge was later dropped. Her jury trial for the murder-related charges began on May 6, 2024. During the trial, the prosecution presented the cell phone call evidence, along with testimonies regarding her inappropriate relationship with Larry. They emphasized that she actively conspired with Larry to kill Robert. On the other hand, the defense argued that there was no direct proof or agreement that suggested that she planned the murder. They pointed out that the case was based on circumstantial evidence. On May 14, 2024, Elizabeth was found guilty of both charges. On June 17, 2024, she received a 60-year prison term for aiding murder and a consecutive 30-year term for conspiracy.

Elizabeth’s earliest possible release date is scheduled for February 16, 2090. She later appealed her conviction on the grounds of insufficient evidence, trial errors affecting fairness, and improper admission of key evidence. However, the Appellate court denied her appeal and upheld her judgment in May 2025. Following his indictment, Larry’s trial faced several delays before it commenced on December 15, 2025. Court records state that the prosecution argued Larry was the gunman who killed Robert after conspiring with Elizabeth. Additionally, the prosecution presented several cell phone records, location data, CCTV footage, and witness testimonies.

The prosecution highlighted Larry’s previous murder conviction, pointing out that it demonstrated capability. On the contrary, the defense contended that no murder weapon was recovered. They reportedly claimed that Larry had no involvement in the murder, and the case was highly circumstantial. On December 17, the jury found him guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Larry was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murder and an additional 40 years in prison for conspiracy on February 13, 2026. As of writing, he is serving his sentence at the Reception Diagnostic Center in Plainfield, Indiana. Elizabeth is currently incarcerated at the Indiana Women’s Prison in Indianapolis, Indiana.
