Rose Metcalf: Where is the Costa Concordia Dancer Now?

On the late evening of January 13, 2012, the entire world shifted off axis for professional cruise dancer Rose Metcalf as she found herself navigating a terrifying situation unlike any other. She was an employee on the Costa Concordia cruise ship when it struck a rock while performing a spontaneous sail-past salute off the coast of Giglio Island, Italy, resulting in it partially sinking. Little did she know she would soon be hailed a hero, as carefully profiled in Netflix’s ‘Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea,’ but she was, owing to her sheer will and determination to help others.

Rose Metcalf Was Living Her Dream Life in Early 2012

A proud native of Dorchester, England, Rose Metcalf was born on July 23, 1988, to Carolyn Elizabeth Metcalf and Philip George Metcalf in a truly affectionate, supportive household. Therefore, when she started dancing almost as soon as she could walk, her loved ones only ever praised her ambitions, creativity, movements, and passion, instilling in her a sense of self-confidence. That’s how she managed to kickstart her performing career at age 6 by landing a role in ‘The Browning Version’ before taking it to the next level with pantomimes/musical theater at age 8.

Rose honed her knowledge and skills through firsthand experience over the years, becoming such an incredible performer that she secured a full scholarship upon graduating from high school. She thus attended University of the Arts London (UAL) from 2008 to 2011 to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Theater-Dance, during which she believed she found her calling as a professional dancer. So, she signed her first contract a couple of months after finishing her studies in August 2011, ready to be a performer on the Costa Concordia cruise ship that sailed across the Mediterranean.

Rose was admittedly living the dream while serving as a cruise dancer, not only because she was doing what she loved but also because she was getting to explore some wondrous regions. According to her accounts, she even made some great friends along the way and was happily dating a fellow employee – a barman at the local coffee house in the back of the ship – by early 2012. Therefore, during her break after 9/9:30 pm on the evening of January 13, she made her way to the café to spend some time with her lover and grab a drink, unaware that everything would soon change.

Rose Metcalf Reportedly Developed PTSD From the Traumatic Incident

Rose was enjoying her downtime while still in her dance costume when she suddenly felt the vessel stop or hit something, making the cutlery around her shatter and the tables move. “There was absolute panic… People were white, people were crying, screaming,” she told BBC Breakfast. “The sound was absolutely unbelievable, terrifying. A groan is a very, very apt description.” She was just 23 at the time and had no prior experience on a cruise, but she knew something was terribly wrong even when the announcements said they were just facing an electrical “blackout.”

Therefore, Rose ran to her room, changed out of her costume, put on a life vest, and began helping passengers, despite her immediate supervisor ordering her to return to the stage. According to the show, the young woman couldn’t believe what was being asked of her, so she claimed she quit right on the spot. She was reportedly even more shocked when passengers were asked to return to their cabins because she knew it likely wasn’t safe. Despite defying her supervisor, Rose didn’t hesitate to lead much of the evacuation process when the order to abandon the vessel was given more than an hour later. As per records, she was one of the few who called mayday when needed, helped get hundreds of passengers/crew members into lifeboats, and navigated the tilting ship without injury.

Unfortunately, Rose and the 4 others who had been aiding alongside her could not find a raft for themselves, and that’s when her fight-or-flight really kicked in because she missed her family. She suddenly remembered she had a flashlight in her pocket, so she began flickering it towards the nearby Giglio Island, which led to her and her companions’ rescue by helicopter. Her night was far from over, though, as she subsequently also took it upon herself to be among those coordinating the rescue operations from an Italian military base for the next few hours. It reportedly wasn’t until 3 am that she finally let out a breath and called her family to let them know she was okay, but alas, it all had a lasting emotional impact on her, as she navigated the heavy trauma, survivor’s guilt, and PTSD.

Rose Metcalf Transformed Her Pain and Troubles Into a Mission of Women Empowerment

Even though more than 12 years have gone by since the fateful night of January 13, 2012, Rose still remembers everything that transpired and its aftermath in vivid detail. Whether it be her helping create “human chains” to ensure passengers could reach liferafts safely or her being stuck on a floor that was slowly becoming horizontal with no escape, it’s all still embedded in her mind. It took her a while to realize she had developed survivor’s guilt and PTSD owing to the incident, but she never expected for it all to also affect her love for dance and performing, which it did to a great extent. She herself has since said that following her return home in early 2012, she took a short break, only to later find herself self-sabotaging every audition because she was afraid of what might happen in the future.

That’s when Rose turned all her focus inwards, began speaking out about her experiences, and gradually healed through modalities. She even faced her fears of performing and stepping on a ship again, because she knew she had to do it if she wanted to move forward. Then, when her allegedly troubled marriage dissolved, she realized her true calling is not as a professional dancer but as a Feminine Empowerment Coach. So, today, Rose resides in Colorado, where she teaches women how to gradually shift their mindsets and lifestyles, developing tools to help them transform their lives for better health, happiness, and success.

From what we can tell, Rose still dabbles in the arts performances from time to time and continues to dance for her own enjoyment, but her focus today is her mission of Female Empowerment. For this, she even has a website, has published a book titled ‘Unsinkable,’ given various interviews across several platforms, and evolved into a public speaker. Since spreading her wings as a coach, she has proudly served hundreds of clients and, most recently, in June 2026, crossed the milestone of earning one million dollars through this avenue alone.
