The second season of Prime Video’s ‘The Night Manager‘ thrusts Jonathan Pine into another mission, where he must bring down an international arms dealer. Taking place almost a decade after the events of Season 1, the series presents a new challenge for the protagonist, and this time, as well, there is a woman at the heart of it. But while Elizabeth Debicki’s Jed was a victim of her circumstances and needed a way out, this time Pine comes across Roxana Bolaños, who has much more agency and power, which she uses to not only do the right thing but also to get what she wants. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Roxana Bolaños Brings Jonathan Pine Into His Next Chapter
Roxana Bolaños is introduced in the second season of ‘The Night Manager’ as a mysterious woman whom Jonathan Pine first encounters at the house of his boss, Rex Mayhew. He gets a fleeting look at her, which makes him wonder if what Rex is doing with her is personal or professional. He gets the answer soon enough when Rex dies under mysterious circumstances and leaves him his cell phone, through which he figures out Roxana’s identity. He finds her in a restaurant, where he updates her on Rex’s death and takes her with him to a hotel where they get to talk privately.

It turns out that Roxana runs a trading business, where an import company in Cartagena needed to establish contact with a UK company to buy tools for building an oil pipeline. Because of Roxana’s family and roots in Colombia, she was approached to broker the deal, and they found an intermediary in London. Soon, however, she started to feel as if she was not being told everything about the deal, and the more she thought about it, the more off it felt. She had met Rex at a party sometime ago, and he felt like the right person to go to with this information. That’s why she was at his party.
Rex was supposed to look into her concerns, but she didn’t know that while she had been waiting for his call, he had already been killed. With Rex’s death, Pine believes Roxana’s life is in danger too, but this doesn’t mean she can walk away from the whole thing. She is Pine’s in with the villains they are trying to beat, and she also has to help him navigate the treacherous territory he is about to enter when he arrives in Colombia. Over time, however, we also discover that there is much more to Roxana than what appears initially, and she is certainly not the damsel in distress Pine may have believed her to be.
Camila Morrone Brings Roxana’s Complexity to Life
Camila Morrone plays the character of Roxana Bolaños in the second season of ‘The Night Manager.’ The actress is best known for her role as Camila Dunne in Prime Video’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel, ‘Daisy Jones and the Six.’ Her most recent film roles include Patricia Arquette’s ‘Gonzo Girl’ and ‘Marmalade’ alongside Joe Keery. Additionally, she has also appeared in titles like ‘Never Goin’ Back,’ ‘Death Wish,’ ‘Mickey and the Bear,’ and ‘Valley Girl.’ Born and raised in LA to Argentine parents, Morrone was familiar with the Hollywood life at an early age. Both her parents were models and actors, which exposed her to the film industry’s nitty-gritty.
Having seen the pros and cons of being an actor, she briefly had second thoughts about following this line of career. Eventually, however, her passion for the same made her return to it. Still, she decided to be very selective about her projects and confessed that she only agrees to do something when she really connects to the role. In Roxana, she found an interesting person who has many dimensions to her. She described the character as “unpredictable, resilient, and brave,” who is focused on self-preservation. Morrone called her “the smartest person in the room,” while also finding a common ground between Roxana and Pine, with both of them being broken people who are “addicted to the thrill of the game.”
It was easier for Morrone to get into the skin of the character once filming shifted to Colombia, which is where Roxana hails from. Being in the country helped her “establish Roxana’s roots,” especially the Spanish connection, which also served as a common denominator with co-star Diego Calva. While ‘The Night Manager’ is set to put her in a wider limelight, she also has two major Netflix projects to be released in the near future. She is set to appear in Emma Frost’s adaptation of Edith Wharton’s ‘The Age of Innocence,’ alongside Kristine Froseth and Ben Radcliffe. She also has a lead role in horror drama series, ‘Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen,’ executive produced by Stranger Things creators, The Duffer Brothers.
