With the reins of the company finally in her hands, Isla takes this opportunity to present herself as deserving of the role. The Fictional Sports Vision West is the Staple for Basketball News in Running Point
The world of ‘Running Point’ is crafted on the life and story of LA Lakers president Jeanie Buss. However, the show relies on a lot of fictional elements to tell the story. For the most part, the Netflix series names real brands and channels like Sephora and ESPN, which are familiar to the audience. However, when it comes to presenting the fictional parts of the story, a fictional sports news channel called Sports Vision West is brought forward to support the narrative.
In real life, there is no news channel of such name. Sports Vision is presented as an alternative to popular sports channels like ESPN and NBA TV, and the fictional nature of the channel allows the show to present news reports relating to Isla and her family in their own manner. The news channel appears prominently in the show’s first half when Isla is still getting a sense of how to do her job. Like a lot of other media outlets, Sports Vision also emerges as one of the major critics of Isla. The journalists appearing on it express their doubts about her leadership skills and whether she is fit for the role of leading the Waves.
Soon, however, Isla turns the tide in her favor through her smart and fast decisions that save the team and the company from heavy losses they wouldn’t have recovered from. By the end of the season, Sports Vision is amongst the critics whose minds have been changed about Isla’s suitability as a leader. The shift in the tone of the reports about Isla shows how much the world’s view has changed about her. This makes the news channel an important plot device, albeit it remains an entirely fictional addition to the show that otherwise has threads of real-life events and people running through it.
