Ben Renick’s death in June 2017 came as a complete shock to his brother, Sam Renick. Sam lived near the reptile breeding facility in Florence, Missouri, where Ben was fatally shot and was among the first people Lynlee Renick called after the incident. In the early days of the investigation, Lynlee even suggested to authorities that Sam might have been involved in the murder. In CBS’ ‘48 Hours: The Poisonous Wife,’ Sam discussed the impact of the crime and the challenges he faced while fighting to ensure his brother received the justice he deserved.
Sam Renick Was Accused of Being Involved in His Brother Ben’s Murder
Frank James and Charlene Marie Renick raised their two sons, Sam and Ben Renick, in New Florence, Missouri. The family owned a farm, and Sam enjoyed a comfortable upbringing with a loving household. Frank also successfully ran a pet care store. However, things changed in 2012 when the latter was arrested on charges of mail fraud, accused of deceiving investors with false information. This marked a difficult time for the family. In June 2012, Frank died by suicide, and Sam found it especially hard to cope. While he didn’t inherit his father’s financial troubles, the emotional pain understandably remained with him, especially since he had lost his mother just a few years earlier, in 2008.
Ben eventually launched his own reptile breeding business on the family farm, while his brother Sam lived nearby in a separate house on the same property. Although reports indicate that the two brothers were not especially close, they still had love for each other. On June 8, 2017, Ben’s wife, Lynlee Renick, called Sam and told him she found Ben unresponsive. During the initial stages of the investigation, he was heavily scrutinized by law enforcement. Lynlee even suggested his involvement in Ben’s murder, but police found no evidence to support her claims.
During Lynlee’s 2021 trial, she apologized to Sam from the witness stand and claimed she didn’t know what she was doing at the time. She alleged that she always knew Michael Humphrey had committed the murder and admitted to trying to mislead the investigation. Sam, who had fought tirelessly to see the case resolved, later said that her apology only made things worse, as he felt it lacked sincerity. He stated that he would never be able to forgive her for what she had done and expressed relief that she was ultimately convicted for Ben’s murder.
Sam Renick Has Found His Place in the Trading Industry
Sam Renick has built a varied and dynamic career path that reflects his academic curiosity and professional drive. Between 2004 and 2007, he attended three universities: he earned certification in Macromedia Studio MX 2004 from Macromedia University, then studied Digital Media at Full Sail University. He later pursued studies in Business, Finance, and Marketing at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. From 2006 to 2011, Sam worked at his family’s business, Spectrum Pet Care, gaining hands-on experience in operations and management. He then transitioned into retail management, taking on the role of Assistant Manager at National Rent‑To‑Own in St. Louis, where he honed his leadership and customer service skills.
In May 2013, Sam joined Daddy Ray’s, Inc., a subsidiary of J&J Snack Foods Corp, as an Experience Production Supervisor. In this role, he oversaw large-scale production events, managed staff, and ensured quality control. Currently, Sam works as a Commodities Trader at United International. In this position, he analyzes market data, monitors price trends, negotiates contracts, and executes trades involving commodities such as metals, grains, or energy products. This role demands excellent analytical skills, risk management acumen, and an understanding of global economic trends. These are qualities Sam has developed over the years, and the ability to pivot from technical tradeshow operations to analytical trading reflects adaptability and a willingness to learn new fields.
Sam Renick Carries on Ben’s Legacy While Focusing on His Kids Today
Sam Renick currently resides in Wentzville, Missouri, where he is raising his three children—a son and two daughters. A devoted and proud father, he frequently shares milestones and small moments from their lives, which shows how deeply involved he is in their upbringing. Though he is divorced, Sam remains active and present in his children’s day-to-day lives. His bond with them is evident in how consistently he celebrates their accomplishments, big or small. Sam continues to honor the memory of his late brother, Ben Renick. He created a “digital tombstone,” an online tribute dedicated to Ben’s life and legacy, where he shares memories and photographs. For Sam, remembering his brother is a daily act of love and commitment.
