When an 18-year-old barista named Samantha Koenig disappeared out of the blue, the entire community of Anchorage, Alaska, was rocked to its core. What began as a search for the missing teenager soon turned into a homicide investigation when her remains were discovered a few months later. Thanks to the CCTV footage, the detectives were able to find evidence that eventually led them to the perpetrator. In the episode titled ‘Abducted in Anchorage’ of A&E’s ‘City Confidential,’ the focus is on the murder case and the intense investigation that followed.
Samantha Koenig Vanished For a Few Months Before Her Remains Were Discovered
In Anchorage, Alaska, James Jr. and Darlene gave birth to Samantha Tessla Koenig on Aug 30, 1993. The Koenig household also consisted of her two brothers, Travis and Alex, and three sisters, Tonya, Kaylee, and Micah. Samantha also held her two pets, Sheeba and Mulisha, close to her heart. She attended West High School and AVAIL High School and was in a romantic relationship with Duane Tortolani II. Given her love for animals, she saw herself working with animals in the wild animal kingdom or the equestrian field in the future. The kind-hearted teenager had lots of hobbies, including fishing with her father, photography, spending time with friends, camping, playing video games with Duane, and writing music and poetry. Having the ability to light up even the dullest of rooms, Samantha was considered to be the life of the party.
In order to support her ambitions and education, she had worked at Subway and House of Harley. Just before her disappearance, she took up the job of a barista at a Common Grounds coffee shop in Anchorage, Alaska. Her goals for the near future involved her getting enlisted in the Navy as a nurse and building a successful career from there. Unfortunately, fate intervened, and the 18-year-old disappeared on the night of February 1, 2012. When her loved ones couldn’t get in touch with her, they reported her missing. About three months later, her dismembered remains were found at Matanuska Lake, north of Anchorage, by the FBI’s Underwater Search and Evidence Response Team (USERT). The cause of her death was reported to be strangulation.
The Killer Abducted Samantha Koenig From Her Workplace Before Killing Her
In the initial phases of the investigation, the police suspected Samantha Koenig’s boyfriend, Duane Tortolani, to be involved in her murder. When he had a solid alibi, the authorities focused on the surveillance footage of the Common Grounds coffee shop where she worked and the area outside of it. In the footage, the detectives spotted a male figure, Israel Keyes, approach the store late at night on February 1, 2012. He proceeded to abduct her from her workplace at gunpoint and forced her into his truck before fleeing the scene. A while later, the suspect reportedly returned to the Common Grounds store to collect Samantha’s phone. Pretending to be her, he then texted her boyfriend and her employer from her phone, not to raise any kind of suspicion regarding her abduction.
The abductor then took her debit card and obtained the PIN to the ATM card, before reportedly sexually assaulting her and asphyxiating her to death. A few weeks later, on February 17, Israel demanded a ransom from her boyfriend by sending him a photo in which she appeared to be alive. He instructed him to transfer $30,000 to one of Samantha’s ATM cards. Following the ransom note, her family and friends believed that she might be alive after all. Thus, after depositing the amount, the police monitored the withdrawals made from that card in hopes of catching the abductor.
As the investigation led them to travel across different states, including Texas, Alaska, New Mexico, and Arizona, the detectives linked a white Ford Focus to the suspect. Finally, on March 13, 2012, a vehicle matching the description was spotted in Lufkin, Texas, and inside it was Israel Keyes with a bunch of incriminating evidence, including Samantha’s phone and her ATM card. He was arrested and charged with her kidnapping, which resulted in her death. By then, he had already dismembered her body and disposed of her remains on Matanuska Lake. After his arrest, he admitted to being responsible for the murders of at least seven more people, including a Vermont couple, Bill and Loraine Currier, in 2011.
Israel Keyes Took His Own Life While Awaiting Trial
Not only that, Israel Keyes was also allegedly connected to the murder of Randi Ann Malitz Gorenberg in 2007, Debra Feldman in 2009, and James “Jimmy” Lamar Tidwell Jr. in February 2012. Following his arrest, he was transferred to Alaska, where he was awaiting trial. Apart from numerous murders, the killer was also linked to various bank robberies, rape, and arson. In late May 2012, during his preliminary trial, Israel attempted to escape the courtroom but was subdued with a stun gun. He was being held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex, while he was scheduled to stand trial in March 2013 for his involvement in the murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig.
However, before he could be tried, Israel Keyes was found dead in his Anchorage jail cell by the authorities on December 2, 2012. According to reports, the former carpenter and Army veteran took his life by slitting his wrists with a modified razor and strangling himself with the bedding. Apart from leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and unsolved cases, he also left behind a chilling suicide note that led the authorities to believe that he could have been responsible for the murders of at least 11 people across the nation.
