‘Rumor Has It…’ delves into the life of Sarah Huttinger, a woman who writes obituaries and wedding announcements for a newspaper in NYC. She is engaged to a lawyer named Jeff Daly, who loves her dearly. She flies with Jeff to Pasadena for her sister’s wedding, where she finds out that her father, Earl, may not be her biological parent. When Sarah gets clues about an enigmatic man named Beau Burroughs, who could be her biological father, she goes on a difficult journey to find him and ask difficult questions about her origins.
But she may soon realize that Beau is more mysterious than she imagined and might have intriguing secrets which could turn her life upside down. In the narrative, the relationship between Sarah and Jeff plays a pivotal role in driving the character arcs forward. The engaged individuals are wild and unique, which makes their future unpredictable. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Sarah Shockingly Cheats on Jeff with an Unlikely Man
As Sarah meets Beau, she faces difficult emotions. She initially finds it difficult to ask him if he is her biological father. However, when she learns that he is not, she grows even more confused. With her role in the family confusing her, Sarah gets emotional. At this point, Beau offers to comfort her and takes her out, following which the two get drunk. Unexpectedly, Sarah, in the heat of the moment, kisses Beau and then sleeps with him. She even spends the night in his luxurious home and also goes to a party with him. Meanwhile, Jeff, back in NYC, worries for Sarah. After calling her multiple times and not getting answers, he flies out of NYC and reaches the party where Sarah is Beau’s date.
Jeff shockingly catches Sarah kissing Beau and learns that she is cheating on him. Following this, he breaks up with her, effectively ending their engagement. Heartbroken and angry, Jeff returns to NYC to handle his grief. With this turn of events, the seemingly unbreakable bond between Sarah and Jeff is broken by unlikely circumstances. Sarah’s impulsive actions lead her to feelings of guilt and regret. With no signs of a reunion, Sarah assumes that she has ruined her future.
Sarah and Jeff Reunite After a Heartwarming Moment of Love and Respect
After breaking up with Beau, Sarah begins to feel that she might have a chance to save her relationship with Jeff. With the clock working against her, Sarah rushes to the airport to fly back to NYC. Once she arrives in the City, she immediately heads to Jeff’s apartment to tell him that she still loves him and that she is sorry. Initially, Jeff hesitates to give her an audience and shows no interest in listening to her words. She realizes that she made the wrong choices and conveys to Jeff that she cannot take her actions back. She divulges that her affair with Beau didn’t mean anything, but Jeff replies that it means something to him. Sarah wishes to get married to Jeff, and tells him genuinely that she still loves him. Jeff finds it difficult to respond to her feelings and stays silent. Sarah takes the lift and regrets her choices, crying. However, as soon as the lift opens, Jeff waits for her.
He has a change of heart and agrees to marry her, on the condition that their future daughter will never know about Beau. What follows is Sarah and Jeff’s lovely wedding on a cold night in NYC, where their families and friends cheer for them. It can be presumed that Sarah and Jeff will live happily for the rest of their lives, without the guilt of the past haunting them or their children. Thus, the two, despite the challenges, overcome great odds to embrace love and marriage.
