Secrets We Keep: Was Ruby Pregnant? Who was the Father of Her Child?

Netflix’s ‘Secrets We Keep’ investigates the mysterious disappearance of an au pair named Ruby in the suburbs of Copenhagen. When she goes missing, her employers, Kat and Rasmus, don’t seem to be nearly as concerned as their neighbour, Cecilie. The night before her disappearance, Ruby tried to talk to Cecilie about something, but the latter brushed her off because she didn’t want to get involved in the personal affairs of her neighbours and friends. In hindsight, she wishes she had heard out the au pair. This regret gets more pronounced when she discovers that Ruby was pregnant and the father of her child was someone that Cecilie would never have imagined. SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Revelation of Ruby’s Pregnancy Points Towards an Affair

When Cecilie discovers that Ruby has gone missing, she starts to think about all her interactions with the girl and realises that she had seen her while coming home from work. This interaction was memorable because she saw Ruby dumping something into the bin of their neighbours, which was weird because why couldn’t she dump that thing in the bin at Kat and Rasmus’ house? This means that she was hiding something, and when Cecilie looks through the garbage, she finds a pregnancy test. Considering that Ruby had a fiancé back home and she was not publicly involved with anyone else, Cecilie wonders if the girl was having an affair. The most obvious suspect in this case is Rasmus, as he already has a reputation for the same.

As Cecilie leans into this theory, even mentioning it to the detective on the case, she also discovers that her husband, Mike, had been friendlier with Ruby than she knew. Apparently, he had been teaching her how to drive, and they’d exchanged texts, but he never told Cecilie about it. This makes her wonder if her husband was having an affair, but what makes it worse is when affair is ruled out and the possibility of rape is thrown into the mix. With Mike’s distant past as a convicted rapist, she believes that he might have done something bad. She still hasn’t ruled out Rasmus, but she can’t help but distance herself from her husband to see things more clearly.

The DNA Test Reveals the Truth Behind Ruby’s Child

Cecilie’s suspicion breaks Mike’s heart, so when the opportunity arises, he takes it to clear his name. When Ruby’s dead body is found, the post-mortem confirms that she was pregnant, but it is not clear whether that was because of an affair or something much more sinister. Mike offers to give his DNA to confirm that the baby wasn’t his, and soon, Rasmus follows in his footsteps. Interestingly, the DNA has a match with Rasmus, but not enough to prove that he fathered the baby. The match percentage showed that someone related to Rasmus by blood is the father, and considering everything, there is only one person who fits that criteria: his 15-year-old son, Oscar.

It turns out that Oscar had raped Ruby and made a video of it because that was the kind of thing that he and the other boys would share in a group chat on their phones. Cecilie’s son, Viggo, was also in the group, but he never shared anything. In fact, the more time he spent with Oscar and the boys in the group, the more traumatised he would become. Things got worse when Oscar saw him the video of Ruby’s rape, following which Viggo tried to share the information with his mother and their au pair, Angel, but failed. Eventually, Kat deletes the video before the cops can get their hands on it and prosecute her, but its existence proves that Oscar was the father of Ruby’s child, and she died because of him, even if he didn’t kill her with his own hands.
