‘Toaster‘ centers on the life of Ramakant Parikh, a profoundly stingy man residing in Mumbai with his wife, Shilpa. His existence is an unrelenting pursuit of saving money, leading to difficult choices. Ramakant’s already challenging reality takes a dramatic turn when a toaster becomes intertwined with his destiny. The couple gifts an expensive toaster at a pre-wedding reception. However, the cancellation of the wedding leaves Ramakant disturbed, convinced that his costly present was a waste of money. His obsession with reclaiming the toaster grows, fueling desperate attempts to get it back.
This pursuit shockingly plunges him into the middle of a murder case, completely upending his life. Faced with an unprecedented threat, Ramakant must now navigate the challenge of clearing his name, mending his relationship with Shilpa, and retrieving the toaster, which seems to be the key to the entire chaotic situation. Shanti Sharadashram Society is Ramakant’s Home and a Scene of Multiple Crimes
Shanti Sharadashram Society (SSS) is a fictional apartment complex in Mumbai that plays a pivotal role in driving the stakes forward for Ramakant, Shilpa, and those around them. SSS is not merely a collection of buildings, but the stage where the drama unfolds. It is home to multiple devious characters, including Mrs. D’Souza, her son Glen, Pherwani, Shilpa, and Ramakant himself. The residential complex adds to the story’s tension, as it is where many deaths occur, either by design or by fate. The elements of life and death converge in mysterious ways at SSS, making it a dangerous place. Mrs. D’Souza dies of natural causes, followed by Glen, who accidentally falls to his death. Glen’s death is the catalyst that ups the stakes for Ramakant as he is harassed by Pherwani.
The next one to die is Ramakant’s assassin friend, Guddu, who ends up being murdered by Pherwani. SSS also reflects the characters’ emotions, especially those of Ramakant, Shilpa, and Pherwani. Ramakant’s house is a symbol of his miserly nature. It lacks grandeur or comfort, suggesting it is merely a means of survival, not hedonism. Pherwani’s house has a secret sex dungeon that she uses to blackmail Ramakant and forcibly make him her sexual partner. The cops investigate Glen’s death, and Balgaode gets further involved in the toaster case at SSS. The apartment complex also comments on the concepts of luck, survival, and destiny.
The claustrophobic spaces of SSS add to its haunting presence in the movie. Every time the story shifts to the residential society, a sense of tension and possibility follows. Characters are unexpectedly challenged, and destiny plays its hand. The story’s dramatic flavor is enhanced by the sheer presence of the apartment complex. SSS also represents the life of the middle class in India, often facing tough moral, financial, and emotional choices that may alter the grand design of fate.
Perfumez is an Extension of Ramakant’s Miserly Nature and a Key Factor in His Financial Reality
Perfumez is a fictional perfume shop that is located inside a small local mall in Mumbai. It is owned by Ramakant and plays an important role in determining his destiny. The shop is small and lacks any kind of grandeur or visual richness. It adds to Ramakant’s character arc and personality. He uses the shop to source medium-quality perfume from a dealer named Guddu. Ramakant also tries to maximize his profit by selling his products at a considerably higher price. The shop is also where Ramakant hires Guddu to threaten Pherwani and save himself from her bullying. Perfumez is a visual representation of the flavor of Ramakant’s life. It provides him with just enough resources to make a living. The location, the shop’s interiors, and the lighting make it feel real.
Perfumez also conveys a major message towards the end of the narrative. We see Ramakant appreciating the miserly nature of one of his customers. This indicates that Ramakant will continue to save money every second of his life. With everything going on in Ramakant’s life, the perfume store is the only place where he is able to put his miserly nature to best use. The story presents the shop as an instrument of survival, a theme that runs throughout the narrative and adds meaning to the choices of the characters.
