Shea Briar’s sudden and untimely demise in January 2020 sent shockwaves across the community of Jay County, Indiana. However, it deeply affected his family members, including his mother, Tracy Hoevel, his aunt, Tiffany McLaughlin, and his grandmother, Sharon Taylor. CBS’ ’48 Hours: Coached to Kill’ features interviews with these three women, who recount their respective experiences and memories with Shea. Although his sister, Sydney Hoevel, doesn’t make an appearance in the documentary, she shared a close bond with him. When the perpetrators — Esther Jane Stephen, Shelby Hiestand, and Hannah Knapke — were brought to justice, Shea’s family was relieved and established the Shea Michael Briar Memorial Fund.
