10 Shows Like Nine Perfect Strangers You Must See

Created by David E. Kelley, ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ is based on Liane Moriarty’s eponymous novel that takes place in a wellness resort in the fictional town of Cabrillo, California. A group of stressed urban dwellers arrives at the Tranquillum House for a ten-day retreat, lured by a promise from their host and resort director, Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman), of a transformative experience. Masha creates controversy when she reveals to the guests that they were given a minimal dose of psilocybin, a psychoactive drug, in their meals without their knowledge. Many of her guests consider it a crime and are horrified by the way she proceeds to deliver on the promise of reinvigorating them. The psychological thriller drama on Hulu, while initially announced as a mini-series, has since been turned into an anthology. If you have enjoyed the experience, here is a curated list of other shows similar to ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ that you may consider for your next binge.

10. Sirens (2025)

‘Sirens’ tells the story of two sisters, Devon (Meghann Fahy) and Simone (Milly Alcock), set over a single weekend. After being separated for an extended period, Devon discovers Simone at a posh secluded retreat, working as the assistant to the owner, socialite Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore). Devon’s arrival at the place overlaps with a grand charity gala that is scheduled to take place, where she gets invited to participate. However, she soon realizes that it is essentially a cult in which Simone has embroiled herself, with no apparent way to escape. Created by Molly Smith Metzler based on her eponymous book, ‘Sirens’ shares a number of similarities with ‘Nine Perfect Strangers.’ Both are set in wellness resorts for the affluent, where the hostess’ intentions are seemingly sinister.

9. Surface (2022-)

‘Surface’ by Veronica West follows Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a woman who suffers from amnesia after apparently trying to take her own life by jumping off a San Francisco ferry. As she tries to settle into a new life with her husband James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) following the accident, she is bothered by the events of the past, which continue to evade her.  Desperate to uncover the truth, she begins to investigate and gradually regains her memory in the process of an entirely different life she once led. Much like ‘Nine Perfect Strangers,’ ‘Surface’ is an exploration into the hidden past, albeit of an individual instead of a group.

8. Gypsy (2017)

From the mind of Lisa Rubin, ‘Gypsy’ revolves around Jean Holloway (Naomi Watts), a successful clinical psychologist practicing out of New York City. On the surface, she leads a picturesque life with her husband, Michael Holloway (Billy Crudup). However, in reality, Jean blurs the line between professional and personal as she becomes too involved with her clients and impacts the lives of everyone around her. Her overstepping of professional boundaries is reminiscent of Masha’s behavior in ‘Nine Perfect Strangers,’ as the latter never hesitates even to drug her clients without their knowledge.

7. Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)

‘Tell Me Your Secrets’ is created by Harriet Warner around three individuals with troubled pasts who are pushed against the wall as the story unfolds. Among them are Emma Hall (Lily Rabe), who has stared into the eyes of a murderer, John Tyler (Hamish Linklater), a former serial predator desperate to redeem himself for his actions, and Mary Barlow (Amy Brenneman), a grieving mother whose sole wish is to be reunited with her grieving daughter. As their lives are explored, the lines between victim and perpetrator grow increasingly blurry. The uncovering of the buried truth about individuals is what unites ‘Tell Me Your Secrets’ with ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ in spirit.

6. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (2023)

Based on Holly Ringland’s novel of the same name, ‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ by Sarah Lambert tells the story of a young Australian girl whose life dramatically changes after she becomes an orphan and moves in with her grandmother. Alice Hart (Alyla Browne and Alycia Debnam-Carey) loses her parents, including her abusive father, in a mysterious fire. Her estranged grandmother, June Hart (Sigourney Weaver), takes her in to live with her at a nursery, which doubles as a safe haven for victims of domestic abuse.  While seemingly wanting to help people, June hides many secrets, making her comparable to Masha from ‘Nine Perfect Strangers.’

5. The Undoing (2020)

Created by David E. Kelley, ‘The Undoing’ follows Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman), a New York-based psychologist who enjoys an apparently blissful life with her husband Jonathan (Hugh Grant), an oncologist, and their young son Henry (Noah Jupe). However, the facade comes crashing down when the family gets involved in a murder investigation of an artist, Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis), where Jonathan becomes the prime suspect. ‘The Undoing’ and ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ are united by Nicole Kidman’s nuanced portrayal of characters with suppressed intentions.

4. Apples Never Fall (2024)

‘Apples Never Fall,’ developed by Melanie Marnich, chronicles the Delaney family from West Palm Beach, Florida. Tennis coaches Stan (Sam Neill) and Joy (Annette Bening) Delaney sell their school to enjoy retirement, but has their world turned upside down when a wounded stranger shows up at their doorstep. Soon afterward, Joy disappears without a trace, leaving her four children suspicious of their parents’ past. Like ‘Nine Perfect Strangers,’ ‘Apples Never Fall’ is also based on an eponymous novel written by Liane Moriarty. The air of suspense that prevails among the family is eerily similar to what the guests experience at the Tranquillum House.

3. The Perfect Couple (2024-)

‘The Perfect Couple’ is set around the unfortunate events that take place at a beach in Nantucket during the lavish wedding celebration of Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson). A murder in its midst puts a damper on the party and turns every guest into a potential suspect. Developed by Jenna Lamia, the series is based on a novel of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand. While ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ has individuals divulging hidden truths when confronted with difficult situations, ‘The Perfect Couple’ does the same, but with friends and family.

2. The White Lotus (2021-)

From the mind of Mike White, ‘The White Lotus’ chronicles the events taking place in the White Lotus resort chain, where the rich visit to relax and rejuvenate themselves. While they are promised a paradise, their stay proves to be very different. The dysfunctional guests and staff become responsible for the complexities that emerge in the idyllic locale, making the series a social satire. Many parallels can be drawn between ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘Nine Perfect Strangers,’ starting with the resorts that bring together affluent people. While both locations are intended to be places to rewind, the guests are confronted by the revelations of their own suppressed selves.

1. Big Little Lies (2017-2026)

Yet another adaptation of one of Liane Moriarty’s novels, ‘Big Little Lies’ is set in the serene beachfront town of Monterey in California. The story revolves around five seemingly well-off women, Madeline Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman), Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley), Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz), and Renata Klein (Laura Dern), who become involved in a homicide investigation. With the fractures in their blissful lives coming to light, the series throws shade on the conventionally accepted ideas of perfect marriage, sex, parenting, and friendship.

As a result of being adaptations of works of the same author, there are many similarities between ‘Big Little Lies’ and ‘Nine Perfect Strangers.’ Both series share a similar tone, being helmed by David E. Kelley. The psychological thriller dramas attempt to pull away the facade of apparent perfection in the lives of the rich, bringing to light the cracks that come to light under difficult and unforeseen situations.
