10 Shows Like The Better Sister You Must See

‘The Better Sister’ is a mystery thriller show that opens with the murder of high-flying and well-despised lawyer Adam Macintosh (Corey Stoll). His wife, renowned women’s magazine editor Chloe Taylor (Jessica Biel), is one of the suspects. The case reunites her with her long-estranged sister and Adam’s first wife, Nicky (Elizabeth Banks), who struggles with substance abuse and is the mother of Adam’s son, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan), whom she left in the care of the father.

As the investigation proceeds, more suspects and twisted family history emerge. While the show has its fair share of twists and turns, the narrative keeps the dynamic relationship between the two sisters firmly at its center. If you’re blown away by the Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado creation, the following curated list of shows similar to ‘The Better Sister’ will help you explore the genre more.

10. Anatomy of a Scandal (2022)

Based on the eponymous novel by Sarah Vaughan, ‘Anatomy of a Scandal’ follows Sophie Whitehouse (Sienna Miller), wife of Tory MP and Home Office minister James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend). After Sophie comes to know of her husband having an affair with his young aide, Olivia Lytton (Naomi Scott), the scandal makes the news and turns their lives upside down. To add to the terrible situation, James is accused of forcibly having his way with Olivia and thus has to face trial. ‘Anatomy of a Scandal’ mirrors the plotline of ‘The Better Sister’, where the wife of a powerful figure has to cope with the actions of her husband and deal with a woman she can hardly bear.

9. Sisters’ Feud (2024)

Originally titled ‘Las Hermanas Guerra,’ ‘Sisters’ Feud’ tells the story of the intense rivalry between siblings Perla Guerra (Ana Serradilla) and Antonia (Claudia Álvarez). Perla causes an accident that leaves Antonia infertile, as well as sleeps with her husband on their wedding day. Seeking revenge, Antonia kidnaps her sister and forces her into servitude, and the latter is left plotting her escape. The Mexican thriller telenovela from the mind of José Ignacio Valenzuela is a much darker take on the scarred relationship between sisters, with twisted family drama in between.

8. Equinox (2020)

Created by Tea Lindeburg, ‘Equinox’ follows Astrid, who has been left traumatized at the age of nine following the disappearance of her sister Ida and her entire school class on the day of their graduation. Twenty years later, one of the survivors of the incident reaches out to her, leading her to investigate what actually happened on the fateful day in 1999. Based on the podcast Equinox 1985, the Danish show is similar to ‘The Better Sister’ in that it is set around the plot of estranged sisters and hidden dark secrets.

Soon, Cleo disappears as well, leaving Maddie desperate to solve the mystery. Alma Har’el’s miniseries explores the bond between women and follows a whodunnit plot similar to ‘The Better Sister.’

While the sisters had indeed once plotted his demise, an insurance agent investigates to determine if they have followed through. Created by Brett Baer, Dave Finkel, and Sharon Horgan based on the Belgian series ‘Clan’ by Malin-Sarah Gozin, ‘Bad Sisters’ showcases the experiences of sisters caught in the middle of a murder investigation.

When Sarah’s fiancé Kola (Deyemi Okanlawon) disappears on the day of the engagement, the duo decides to run away.  They soon become wanted fugitives as Kola is discovered dead, but the following investigation brings up hidden secrets about his family feud. While ‘Blood Sisters’ seemingly refers to metaphorical sisters rather than literal ones, as in ‘The Better Sister,’ both shows have one of the women come together following the demise of one of their partners.

4. Echoes (2022)

Created by Vanessa Gazy, ‘Echoes’ chronicles twin sisters Leni and Gina McCleary (Michelle Monaghan) who have secretly swapped lives ever since they were children. As grown-ups, both of them lead a double life, sharing two homes, two husbands, and a child between them. However, when one of the sisters mysteriously disappears, their seemingly perfect lives are completely thrown into chaos. Unlike ‘The Better Sister,’ it is one of the sisters who vanishes instead of their partner in ‘Echoes,’ but the idea of hidden secrets between them forms the core of both shows.

3. The Two Sisters (2024)

Created by Kim Kyung-Hee, ‘The Two Sisters’ follows Lee Hye-won (Lee So-yeon) and Lee Hye-ji (Ha Yeon-joo), siblings who were separated as children as a result of their parents’ divorce. Hye-won grows up to be a perfectionist, living with her father and stepmother, while Hye-ji turns more carefree growing up with her mother. They reunite after two decades and find themselves constantly at odds with each other. The reunification of sisters who seemingly cannot tolerate one another is similar to what Chloe and Nicky go through in ‘The Better Sister.’

2. Dead Ringers (2023)

Based on the novel ‘Twins’ by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, ‘Dead Ringers’ by Alice Birch revolves around twin gynecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle (Rachel Weisz), whose personalities differ as much as they look similar. While Beverly is more reserved and proper, Elliot never shies away from being impulsive and predatory. Pretending to be her sister, Elliot seduces a client whom Beverly also fancies, leading to a twisted love triangle.

They clash professionally when a couple of wealthy investors — a big pharma billionaire and her wife — want to fund their research, and Elliot wants to push the boundaries of science, while Beverly only wants to make childbirth as comfortable as possible. The complicated relationship between the twins and the questionable practices they engage in bears a close semblance to Chloe and Nicky from ‘The Better Sister.’

1. Ringer (2011-2012)

‘Ringer’ stars Sarah Michelle Gellar in dual roles of Bridget and Siobhan, twin sisters who lead very different lives. Bridget is a recovering drug addict and stripper in Wyoming who turns into a witness for the FBI against her boss and has to go into hiding. She seeks shelter from her sibling, who is living a family life of affluence in New York. Never telling her family about her twin, Siobhan appears to die by suicide following the latter’s arrival. This allows Bridget to take her sister’s place in society, where she soon realizes that Siobhan has been hiding secrets of her own.

Created by Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder, the story of ‘Ringer’ is greatly similar to ‘The Better Sister.’ As with Chloe and Nicky, Bridget and Siobhan are estranged sisters who are leading very different lives. While Chloe and Siobhan have a family and enjoy their place in an upstanding society, Nicky and Bridget struggle with addiction and are haunted by the questionable choices that they have made. However, as the shows progress, it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems, and all of them are hiding secrets that can potentially upend their lives.
