Created by Leticia López Margalli and Guillermo Ríos, ‘Unspeakable Sins’ revolves around Helena Rivas (Zuria Vega), an affluent woman who finds herself trapped in a controlling and loveless marriage. She engages in an illicit affair with a younger man (Andres Baida), which leads to both developing real feelings for each other. In an attempt to get her domineering husband, Claudio Martinez (Erik Hayser), out of the picture, Helena convinces her lover to seduce him and record their private moments on camera. However, Claudio suspects the plot against him and goes missing, but not before he is seen on camera getting intimate with the man. Soon, what started as a simple tryst becomes a battle for survival for everyone involved.

Originally titled ‘Pecados Inconfesables,’ the psychological thriller drama deals with toxic relationships and illicit affairs, paired with revenge, manipulation, and consequences. It chronicles the marital fidelity of Carlo (Michele Riondino) and Margherita (Lucrezia Guidone), a young couple whose relationship is suffering as a result of allegations of an affair. Based on the 1987 film of the same name by Adrian Lyne, ‘Fatal Attraction’ centers around Los Angeles deputy district attorney Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson), who gets involved in an ill-judged tryst with office colleague Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan). This threatens to pull his marriage to Beth (Amanda Peet) apart, especially as Alex refuses to let it go. The coercive control, secrets, and manipulation lead to terrible consequences, which mirror those that come from the ill-fated affair in ‘Unspeakable Sins.’

‘Love & Death’ by David E. Kelley is based on true events that took place in Wylie, Texas, in 1980. Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) is best friends with Betty Gore (Lily Rabe). Their families attend the Methodist church and get along well with each other.  Trouble begins as Candy finds herself unsatisfied in her marriage and initiates an affair with Betty’s husband, Allan (Jesse Plemons). The quest to explore suppressed desires soon turns deadly, and the cheating couple finds themselves in the middle of an investigation, similar to ‘Unspeakable Sins.’

Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and Benji Walters adapted ‘Obsession’ from the novel ‘Damage’ by Josephine Hart. It tells the story of a scandalous affair involving William (Richard Armitage), a prominent surgeon with a prestigious political career in Parliament, and his soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Anna (Charlie Murphy). William is married to Ingrid (Indira Varma), with whom he shares his son Jay (Rish Shah), Anna’s fiancé. Despite being aware of Jay’s obsession with Anna, William fails to help himself to pursue her with an all-consuming passion, which leads to disastrous results, much like what takes place in ‘Unspeakable Sins.’

Originally titled ‘Diario de un Gigoló,’ Sebastián Ortega’s ‘Diary of a Gigolo’ follows a male gigolo worker who is tasked by a wealthy client to get close to her daughter. The latter has been in a car accident, which resulted in the death of her father and her drawing away from social interactions. While the mother only intends the gigolo to seduce her daughter to boost her confidence, the two fall in love with each other, much to her disapproval. As the gigolo gets tied up in increasing lies and manipulations, his life begins to unravel. Similar to the young lover in ‘Unspeakable Sins,’ the gigolo finds himself out of his depth, with his heart on the line.

5. Edha (2018)

Helmed by Daniel Burman, ‘Edha’ stars Juana Viale as the titular character, a successful fashion designer and single mother who gets inspired by a new, young model, Teo (Andrés Velencoso), to create a line of men’s clothing. However, Teo has a hidden agenda to come into Edha’s life. He seeks revenge for his brother, who has perished in a fire that broke out in a sweatshop allegedly owned by Edha’s company. As Edha builds up a chemistry with Teo, her life begins to unravel. Edha enjoys the affluence of Helena Rivas in ‘Unspeakable Sins,’ as well as her insecurity.

4. Behind Her Eyes (2021)

Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Pinborough, ‘Behind Her Eyes’ by Steve Lightfoot chronicles a single mother and office secretary, Louise Barnsley (Simona Brown), who inadvertently starts an affair with her new boss, psychiatrist David Ferguson (Tom Bateman). Louise also meets David’s wife, Adele (Eve Hewson), and becomes friends with her. David and Adele share a tense and complicated marriage, and as Louise gets increasingly involved with them against her better judgment, she finds herself embroiled in a mesh of twisted secrets and lies. Much like ‘Unspeakable Sins,’ what begins as a simple, ill-judged affair turns into abject horror for the newcomer in between the married couple.

Originally titled ‘Olhar Indiscreto,’ ‘Lady Voyeur’ by Marcela Citterio centers around Miranda (Débora Nascimento), a talented hacker addicted to voyeurism, who lives across Cléo (Emanuelle Araújo), a sophisticated sex worker. Miranda regularly watches Cléo and her clients from her room with her binoculars. One day, Cléo knocks on her door and asks Miranda to take care of her dog while she goes on a holiday. The latter agrees, while on the same day, she meets the man of her dreams. However, things soon start to go south, as the voyeur soon finds herself thrust into the middle of a dangerous investigation. The sex, lies, and hidden truths that Miranda gets caught up in are reminiscent of the plot of ‘Unspeakable Sins.’

‘Dark Desire,’ originally titled ‘Oscuro deseo,’ is created by Leticia López Margalli and revolves around law school professor Alma Quintana Solares (Maite Perroni). Trapped in a loveless marriage with Leonardo (Jorge Poza), a judge who has kept much from her, and mother to Zoe (Regina Pavón), Alma spends a weekend away from home. During this time, she unwittingly gets involved with Darío Guerra (Alejandro Speitzer), who later turns out to be a new student in her class. While she cannot erase the past, Alma attempts to keep herself away from David and fails, as passion flares between them. Soon, the tryst begins to upend her life, much like what happens with Helena and her lover in ‘Unspeakable Sins.’

1. Fatal Seduction (2023-2025)

Created by Steven Pillemer, ‘Fatal Seduction’ follows Nandi Mahlati (Kgomotso Christopher), a married college professor who goes away on a weekend trip with her best friend, Brenda Grootboom (Lunathi Mampofu). She is going through a rough patch in her marriage, suffering a miscarriage and suspecting her husband, Leonard (Thapelo Mokoena), of cheating on her. During the holiday, she comes across a much younger man, Jacob Tau (Prince Grootboom), and the two instantly have an intense and very physical connection. After returning home, Nandi tries to get back to her everyday life, but is shocked to find out Leonard is a new student in her class. Her relationship with her husband also grows further complicated. Soon, Breanda turns up dead, and everyone’s life turns upside down.

There are many similarities between the plotlines of ‘Fatal Seduction’ and ‘Unspeakable Sins,’ with both revolving around a romantic tryst that begins over a holiday and rapidly spirals into a full-blown affair. It is initiated by the women who are unhappy in their marriages, and draws in a younger man in a world of deceit and lies. Both narratives take a darker turn, bringing everyone involved under investigation for crimes that take place.
