Sisu 3: Will it Happen?

Written and directed by Jalmari Helander, ‘Sisu: Road to Revenge’ returns to the world first introduced in ‘Sisu,’ where Aatami Korpi transforms into a legendary killer known as the Immortal. After Finland cedes some of its territory to the Soviet Union, Aatami is forced to relocate to safer regions, but not before he can return to his home, disassemble every individual log, and take them back on his truck. What he doesn’t know, however, is that he is being tailed by the very man who once killed his entire family. By the end of the movie, these two men inevitably lunge at each other’s throats, but Aatami emerges on top. As of writing, the creators of this Finnish action-thriller movie have not announced a sequel, but in the best-case scenario, fans can expect a third movie to be released sometime around 2029 to 2030.

Sisu 3 Depends on Whether Actor Jorma Tommila Wants to Return to This Action-Packed World

Although the creators of the ‘Sisu’ series have not confirmed a third movie as of writing, the creative possibilities for such a sequel are boundless. At the crux of it all is the theme of Aatami’s immortality and how he manages to survive no matter what life throws at him. With that in mind, the creators can bring in as many opponents as they want, as Aatami is almost destined to defeat them all and continue his life. Where the nuances of his story fit in, on the other hand, are in the positive connections he develops, especially towards the end of ‘Sisu: Road to Revenge.’ With him building a new house, the story reaches a closure stage, with the Finnish war hero quite literally settling down. However, this doesn’t mean that his world is free of nefarious forces, as they can return at any time.

Realistically, the biggest challenge that stands in the way of a hypothetical ‘Sisu 3′ is whether Jorma Tommila can pull off the film series’ extreme action set-pieces with the ease he is known for. In a conversation with CZ, he explained how his age made the role more challenging, but also how he found strength through the lessons he learned from his former theatre director, Jouko Turkka. For the first ‘Sisu’ movie, Tommila spent a year getting into shape and practicing horse-riding, swimming, and strength-training to convincingly play the character. Going a step further, he entered the mindset of not requiring any machines at all, as that is the lifestyle Aatami has in the movies. However, given the gap between the productions of these movies, it might be difficult for the creators to fit in action sequences of the same intensity. Still, Tommila remains as impressive as ever when it comes to being an action star, which means that the possibility is always there.

Sisu 3 Can Introduce More World War II History Into its Story

Given that the first movie pits Aatami against the SS, and that the second movie focuses on him defeating the Red Army, if a third ‘Sisu’ movie is greenlit, Aatami will likely face a brand new group of enemies. As of now, he appears to have settled into a peaceful region in Finland, where the local community is caring enough to help him build his home. In such a scenario, the focus of the movie shifts from Aatami fighting for himself to Aatami fighting for a group of people he cares about. This transition can also be thematically significant, as much of his arc is about learning to love people again. While Aatami’s silence has now become a part of his character, it also stands in for his apparent loneliness, and a follow-up movie that places him in society can change that.

Notably, while Yeagor and his KGB Handlers may be dead, the rest of the Red Army is likely hungrier than ever for revenge. As per historical records, Finland lost about 12% of its territory and 20% of its industrial capacity during World War II, mostly to the Soviet Union. It wasn’t until 1948 that the Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance treaty was signed by both countries, formally ending their conflict. This suggests that there is still ample room for the movie series to bring Aatami face-to-face with the Red Army. Additionally, a hypothetical third movie can introduce a smaller-scale set of villains, such as local pirates or bandits. At the end of the day, the star of the narrative is Aatami, and antagonists of all shapes and forms make little difference to him.
