Sophiana Spice Kitchen Symbolizes Geetika and Sophie’s Past and Present
Sophiana Spice Kitchen (SSK) is a fictional Indian restaurant that reveals certain truths about Geetika’s past. The narrative introduces Sophie, who is Geetika’s former lover. The two women were deeply in love at one point in their lives, but eventually grew distant. SSK is a popular restaurant that garners recognition for serving authentic Indian food. However, the owner, Sophie, is not Indian. Due to her love for Geetika, Sophie learns Hindi, while also developing a taste for Indian food. The food also impresses the guests at the house party that Geetika and Meera host to announce that they are going to adopt a baby. Sophie deals with melancholy and longing after the end of her relationship with Geetika. Sophie starts SSK as a symbol of her love for Geetika.

The restaurant allows her to keep reliving her memories with Geetika, while also winning the hearts of the customers. SSK is also where Geetika meets Sophie in the present to talk about her life. It becomes an escape from the harsh realities of her world after the start of the hospital’s sexual abuse investigation. When Mansoor visits the restaurant to find out more about Sophie’s connection to Geetika, he realizes that Sophie is still in love with Geetika and will probably never be able to forget her. This is also when he sees Sophie’s brother, Mark, causing a scene. Though Sophie acts like she has moved on, she feels a deep sense of pain when she sees Geetika and Meera together. But Geetika cannot see this and believes everything is okay with her former lover.
SSK is the only place where she is able to channelize her pain into something positive. Though Geetika doesn’t realize the real meaning of SSK, she continues to meet Sophie as a friend. The restaurant is also symbolic of the immigrant experience, as we see many people getting a taste of India away from the country. The restaurant will likely grow to be more popular as it continues to impress the customers. Ultimately, through SSK, the movie delivers a deeper message on memory, longing, and love.
