‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 is set to commence filming in Mississauga this month. Primary show running duties for the series are held by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. Serving as the 11th installment in the Star Trek series, it made its debut in 2022 as a significant addition to Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe. The reported filming period for Season 3 is set to span from December 2023 to June 2024.
‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 2 concluded with a tense standoff as the Enterprise, led by Captain Pike (Anson Mount), faced impending war with the Gorn. The finale showcased Pike’s tough choice to defy orders and rescue his trapped team, creating a dramatic cliffhanger reminiscent of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’s’ iconic ‘Best of Both Worlds.’ Season 2 also marked significant milestones, breaking new ground for the Star Trek franchise. The introduction of the show’s first musical episode, ‘Subspace Rhapsody,’ resonated with audiences, while a groundbreaking crossover between live-action and animation saw characters from ‘Lower Decks’ on a time-travel journey to the Enterprise. The season showcased a willingness to explore uncharted territories within the Star Trek universe.
As Season 2 concludes, a plethora of unanswered questions sets the stage for Season 3, promising thrilling revelations. The reappearance of the Gorn, a reptilian-humanoid extraterrestrial, injects suspense into the narrative as Captain Pike confronts a dilemma: follow Enterprise commands or embark on a nonviolent quest to rescue his crew. The unresolved fate of Captain Batel, harboring Gorn eggs, adds an intriguing layer to the cosmic drama unfolding. The unexpected inclusion of Montgomery Scott introduces a dynamic element to Season 3, leaving avid fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming developments.
Brought to life through the collaborative efforts of CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, ‘Strange New Worlds’ is the creative brainchild of Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. Taking on the roles of co-showrunners are Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. The lineup of executive producers includes Kurtzman, Lumet, Myers, Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth.
At the core of the cast is Anson Mount, returning in the much-loved role of Captain Pike. Alongside him, Ethan Peck embodies Spock, Christina Chong portrays La’an, Melissa Navia takes on the character of Erica Ortegas, and Rebecca Romjin brings Una-Chin Riley to life. The ensemble widens its array of talents with individuals such as Babs Olusanmokun, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, and notably, Martin Quinn makes a noteworthy appearance as Lieutenant Montgomery Scott in the Season 2 finale.
If production goes well in early December, ‘Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 may see one episode filmed before Christmas, and the rest in early 2024. Historically, there’s a 15-month gap between production and premiere. While early 2025 is likely, there’s speculation of a late 2024 debut, possibly by splitting the season, similar to ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 1. Mississauga has served as the backdrop for the previous two seasons of the show as well, and this year, the city has been a hub for notable productions like ‘Priscilla’ and ‘You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.’
