S&X Season 2 Cast and Plot Theories

Season 1 of ‘S&X’ charts a daunting path for protagonist Ichito Shimotori as the sex therapist is forced to reckon with both his past and his present. The doctor ventured into this unconventional and burgeoning field due to his own complicated relationship with sex. A pivotal moment from his teenage years colored Ichito’s views on the act, leading him to become repulsed by it over time. While he has managed to navigate a sexless life without any troubles so far, it soon becomes a problem when he rekindles a connection with an old friend, Yumi Ichinose.

As the budding romance between the two develops, the therapist is forced to turn his critical analysis inwards and face his taut past head-on in the hopes of gaining some closure and resolution. By the end of the season, Ichito has made promising progress, which helps him not only in his relationship but also in his professional life. However, some mysteries still remain unraveled, leaving plenty of possibilities open for a future season. Since Netflix has yet to renew the show, the project’s future remains uncertain. In the event of a swift renewal, fans can expect season 2 to hit the screens sometime in 2028.

S&X Season 2 Could Investigate the Identity of Ichito’s Mother’s Lover

At the end of ‘S&X’ season 1, Ichito’s traumatizing past comes out in the open. As a teenager, the protagonist caught his mother in an extramarital affair moments before his father cut off his wife’s lover’s penis with a scalpel. For most of his life, the circumstances around these events have been a point of confusion and frustration for him. As a kid, he had always assumed his parents had a perfect marriage, which is why he’s unable to justify his mother’s actions or his father’s reaction. So far, this has pushed him down a path of avoiding the issue. However, things change following an encounter with Dean Toyahara, in which the older doctor reveals that he used to be best friends with the sex therapist’s father.

As a result, he is able to shed more light on the couple’s relationship and the husband’s abusively controlling demeanor. Thus, Ichito realizes that for his mother, the affair was a way of momentary escape from his father’s cage-like control. On the other hand, the viewers receive some context for Toyahara’s interest in Ichito’s life to the point where he has been secretly in cahoots with the younger man’s sex therapist, Sion. However, it also opens up space for speculation that Toyahara himself could have been the secret lover in Ichito’s parents’ marriage. Even if this theory doesn’t come to fruition, the narrative could benefit from looping the mysterious lover into the story to further expand upon the protagonist’s defining past.

S&X Season 2 Will Likely Bring Back the Majority of the Central Characters

‘S&X’ lays down the foundation for a compelling narrative with episodic challenges and an overarching narrative thread. The show will likely continue building upon this same premise in the event of a future continuation. This means most of the characters fans are introduced to in season 1 will make a comeback. The Shimotori Clinic, the nucleus of the story, will likely see the return of its small staff, which includes Ichito Shimotori (Kento Nakajima), Yuta Saikawa (Ryota Miura), Marin Natsume (Sawako Fujima), and Daisuke Kurusu (Yusuke Santamaria).

On the other hand, the sex therapist’s love interest, Yumi Ichinose (Yuko Araki), will also remain a crucial part of the show’s potential future. As the narrative continues to delve into Yumi’s narrative, players from her world of news reporting are also bound to follow. Thus, cast members like Aoi Nakamura (Shun Kazuma), Rinka Kumada (Miku Kono), and Magi (Producer Kudo) are also likely to reprise their roles. Additionally, characters like Sion and Hoyatara can also be expected to remain a part of the show. However, given the series’ episodic formula around Ichito’s patients, it’s also highly likely that an entirely new cast of characters will be introduced in a potential season 2.

S&X Season 2 Will Maintain Focus on Shimotori Clinic and Its Revolving Door of Patients

While Ichito and Yumi’s love story and the doctor’s mysterious past remain a focal point of ‘S&X’ season 1, the show’s premise centers around the various cases that the protagonist deals with in his line of work. As a result, each episode brings a new plot line regarding a new client and the problems surrounding their sex life. This allows the narrative to address multiple issues, including sexual addiction, sexual harassment, lack of sexual attraction, and more. Given the significance of these storylines, fans can expect a similar format to be utilized in a potential season 2. As such, while Ichito and Yumi’s love story will likely continue evolving, the doctor will also continue seeing his patients.

On the other hand, a retained focus on the clinic will allow the series to develop characters like Yuta and Marin further. By the end of season 1, the nurse has become more comfortable with his job to the point of even standing up to his snobbish family. Thus, developing his narrative further as he connects with the job will define the positive side of sexology. Alternatively, Marin’s storyline can be further developed with a more prominent inclusion of her love life and her relationship with her girlfriend. Lastly, now that Kusuru has become one of Ichito’s patients, a more in-depth dive into his treatment will likely be a part of the story in the future.
