HBO Max’s ‘Task’ is a gritty crime drama series about a federal investigation that unravels in the aftermath of a string of robberies. Tom Brandis, a priest-turned-FBI agent, is leading the task force on the case. However, behind closed doors, the widower finds himself balancing a precarious personal life as his family finds themselves in the middle of a devastating court case, awaiting the sentencing for one of their own. Robbie Prendergrast helps the narrative from the other side, as a garbage truck driver who is struggling to be there for his family in the aftermath of his wife’s abandonment. Therefore, under the cover of the night, he and his friend, Cliff, target previously-scouted drug houses for their robberies. As Tom investigates these same burglaries, a pattern emerges. Robbie and associates seem to only be targeting locations linked to the Dark Hearts biker club, which belongs to the overarching Mother Club, one of the deadliest gangs in Philadelphia.
Dark Hearts and Mother Club are Fictional Biker Clubs With Some Parallels in Real-Life
Much like other narrative elements in ‘Task,’ the biker gang Dark Hearts and its parent organization, the Mother Club, are both works of fiction. They were created specifically in service of the story and hold no direct counterparts in reality. Consequently, there are no off-screen identical criminal organizations that present a possible biographical inspiration for Dark Hearts. Even so, the on-screen depiction of these gangs retains some level of realism that enhances the authentic worldbuilding in the show. In real life, Philadelphia is a hotbed of biker gangs, home to prominent organizations like Pagan’s Motorcycle Club, Wheels of Soul Motorcycle Club, Warlocks Motorcycle Club, and more. In fact, of these real-life clubs, the latter was even formed around the area of Delaware County, or Delco, the Pennsylvania-based county where the show takes place.
Furthermore, the Warlocks Motorcycle Club, also known as Harpy Warlocks or Philadelphia Warlocks, is also known to have some connections to drug trafficking. In the past, members of the motorcycle club have been convicted of conspiracy to distribute. As such, there seems to be some connection between the motorcycle club and drug trafficking. Similarly, other Philadelphia-linked clubs, including Wheels of Soul, are known to have connections to drug distribution. As for the on-screen Mother Club, it seems to represent the mother chapter that most motorcycle clubs possess in one form or another. Consequently, it’s evident that the reality of these criminal organizations lent significant influence or even varying amounts of inspiration in the creation of Dark Hearts.
Yet, since there’s no direct correlation between the on-screen biker gang and an off-screen club, the former retains its fictitious origins. As a result, while the structure and criminal association of Dark Hearts sports some basis in reality, its on-screen contribution to the narrative remains rooted in fictionality. In real life, there has been no recorded instance of motorcycle gangs becoming the target of non-organized individual crimes, which offers a notable parallel to Robbie’s storyline. Therefore, while the broader image that Dark Heart presents may find some parallels in reality, the details surrounding the fictional gang and its members hold no tangible basis in real life. Ultimately, the biker gang offers a realistic addition to the show’s overarching criminal storyline. Yet, there’s no direct inspiration behind it outside of the story’s fictional confines.
