Do Chloe and Jake End Up Together in The Better Sister?

Prime Video’s ‘The Better Sister’ tells the story of Chloe Taylor, the editor-in-chief of a popular magazine, who has a problematic relationship with her sister, Nicky. When Chloe’s husband, Adam, is killed, she and Nicky must come together to bridge their past differences while also taking care of Ethan, the latter’s biological son, who the protagonist raised. As they navigate the complex drama engulfing them both, the sisters also embark on romantic quests that take them in different directions. In the case of Chloe, this manifests through her clandestine affair with Jake Rodriguez, her husband’s former colleague, whose feelings for her go much deeper than a surface-level fling. Jake’s Dark Fate Puts an End to His Complicated Relationship With Chloe

At the end of ‘The Better Sister,’ we learn through a shocking twist that Jake is dead. The revelation comes after pressure begins to grow on Jake from all sides, especially as he tries to juggle his job responsibilities at Braddock and Braddock while also working undercover for the FBI. The people on both sides turn the screw on him, leaving him floundering for a way out of his precarious situation. To that end, Jake desperately seeks Chloe’s help to escape his dire circumstances. Subsequently, the protagonist gets her hands on evidence to nail down the Gentry Group, the main company being investigated by the FBI. She finds what she is looking for in her husband’s safe, which she mails anonymously to Officer Bowen, leading to the arrest of the entire Braddock and Braddock hierarchy.

Despite successfully apprehending and getting rid of the problem, Jake’s fate remains a dark one. In the final parts of the show, we see Michelle Sanders, Jake’s attorney friend, visit his home, hoping to check on his current health and whereabouts. However, he is nowhere to be seen. Instead, we later see his dead body on the shore outside his home, suggesting that Jake died via suicide. It is the likeliest explanation for his death, especially as we see him struggling to cope with the immense pressure being exerted on him by FBI Agent Olivero and his bosses at Braddock and Braddock. Therefore, his passing constitutes what we have already become accustomed to thus far, including the cutthroat nature of the business Jake is a part of. Still, it means that there is no chance that his relationship with Chloe will ever become a reality in the future.

Chloe Found Solace in Jake’s Arms During a Strained Period With Adam

Chloe and Jake’s secret affair was the by-product of a troubled relationship with Adam. Although Chloe and Adam had a strong relationship in the past, their bond had come under significant strain in the wake of certain career choices made by the latter. As such, verbal arguments and fights were a common occurrence within the household, leading to split loyalties within Chloe’s mind. During this period, she started to have a fling with Jake, who was Adam’s partner at the firm. Eventually, this clandestine situation grew even stronger when Adam started physically harming Chloe at home, a matter that was seemingly met with rage by Jake. He was unhappy that Chloe was being mistreated by her husband, especially because of his deep feelings of love towards the woman.

The discussions surrounding the physical abuse become a matter of huge contention during Ethan’s hearings. Chloe uses it as leverage and a renewed legal strategy to free her son from prison. However, in her attempts to do so, she forces Jake into a corner by having him take the stand and answer questions that put him in a difficult spot. While he tries to maintain his innocence, it ends up working in Ethan’s favor and proves to be the masterstroke Chloe hopes for. Yet, it completely ruins her relationship with Jake forever, and he realizes that Chloe never cared enough about him to actually reconsider the way in which she uses him in court. Thus, even before Jake’s passing, a massive rift keeps him and Chloe apart, which becomes all the more unsurpassable at the end.
