The Buccaneers: Does Lizzy Marry Hector? Do They End Up Together?

The second season of Apple TV+’s ‘The Buccaneers‘ brings many twists and turns in Lizzy’s life. She came to London with her friends in the hopes of finding a husband for herself, but the experience with Seadown left her so broken that she didn’t think she would find affection, let alone love, for another man. But then, Hector comes into the picture, and things escalate pretty quickly between them. However, things get complicated when she falls for Theo, and the final episode of the season keeps building this tension in their love triangle. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Lizzy Accepts Hector’s Second Proposal of Marriage

The first time Hector proposed to Lizzy, she gave a giddy acceptance. She even came close to marrying him, but she changed her mind on their wedding day. To the others, the excuse was that she had taken ill, which is why the wedding was postponed, not cancelled. But Lizzy didn’t delude Hector while breaking up with him. She told him that she wanted a whole love, where she could have the passion as well as the stability she wanted from her partner. It seemed that she couldn’t have the passion with Hector because she didn’t exactly love him like that. And then, Hector notices an interaction between her and Theo at Richard’s memorial service. This is when he realizes that Lizzie has broken up with him because of Theo. Because he already resents Theo, he refuses to lose Lizzy to him, and so he comes up with the devious plan to get her back.

Hector knows that if the news about Lizzy and Theo’s affair comes out, it will ruin Lizzy’s reputation such that she would become an outcast, and no man of repute will dare marry her. He also knows that because of him being a Duke, Theo will never get a divorce, and so, he will never be able to give Lizzy the whole love and life that she desires and deserves. So, to break them up, Hector leaks the news about Theo having an affair with one of Nan’s close friends, though he does not name Lizzy directly. This has the intended effect, and as Lizzy falls into panic, Hector swoops in to play the role of a good and loyal friend. He makes a show of empathizing with Lizzy’s condition, while also explaining to her how the prospects of her finding a husband will fall from slim to none.

He tells her that he still loves and cares for her and is ready to ignore the whole affair thing with Theo. He also highlights the fact that she is out of options and he is the only one who can help her out of this predicament. Lizzy is moved by Hector’s actions, mainly because she has no idea that he is the one who made things worse for her. She appreciates that, despite the affair, he is ready to take her back. She thinks about it a bit, and by the time the Tintagel Ball rolls around, she seems to have made up her mind. During the ball, she tells Hector that she accepts his proposal and is ready to marry him. But then, Theo drops a bombshell that changes everything.

Lizzy and Hector Were Never Meant to Be

When Lizzy agrees to marry Hector, she is under the impression that Theo and Nan will never get divorced, and her ill reputation will prevent her from finding another decent man. But then, Theo announces the renouncing of his title, which leaves him free to get a divorce and marry the woman he loves. The moment he says this, Hector realises that he has lost Lizzy for good. But this wasn’t the only reason that things wouldn’t have worked out between them. Sooner or later, most likely much later, Lizzy would have found out that Hector was the leak. She would realise that he had cornered her and manipulated her into accepting his proposal. While Hector doesn’t have any titles, divorcing him wouldn’t be as easy if he doesn’t commit adultery.

Moreover, marrying him wouldn’t change the fact that Lizzy doesn’t love him, and this lack of passion would eventually sour their marriage, and it would inevitably end. Hector is reminded about the lies ruining relationships by his own father. Reede sees through his son’s act and warns him that this is not the path that a good person would take, while also wondering whether Hector would be able to live with the guilt of manipulating Lizzy into choosing him for the rest of his life. With his own father disapproving of this union, it seems unlikely that Hector would go forward with it. In any case, Theo’s announcement is enough for Lizzy to reconsider things, and that marks the end of whatever back and forth she had going with Hector.
