The second season of Apple TV+’s ‘The Buccaneers’ creates a complex web of relationships where people who are in love with each other don’t get to be together because they are tied to other people. The most prominent of such relationships is Theo and Lizzy’s. The couple gets close to one another under exceptionally unexpected circumstances. With Nan still being in love with Guy and dreaming of a future with him, Theo’s broken heart finds reprieve in Lizzy, who also falls in love with him. However, the more they fall for each other, the more complicated things get. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Nan and Theo Have a Chance of Getting Divorced Now
In the final episode of the second season of ‘The Buccaneers’, Nan and Lizzy finally have a confrontation about the latter’s affair with Theo. This is heartbreaking for Nan, not just because her best friend slept with her husband, but also because she has recently found out she is pregnant, and Theo and Lizzy’s romance makes things more difficult for her. It also explains why Theo is so intent on her leaving Tintagel as soon as possible. She tries to blackmail him into letting her stay, but when the news of an affair at Tintagel is published on the front page of the newspaper, he is forced to do something drastic that will not only hurt Nan but also give him the freedom to leave her.
The problem with Nan and Theo’s loveless marriage is that his title prevents him from getting divorced. He also knows that the title is what Nan has been clinging to, so he decided to remove it from the situation. At the Tintagel Ball, he announces that he is going to renounce his title because he doesn’t want to be married to Nan anymore. He also explains the whole thing about the freedom of being without a title, allowing him to divorce Nan and marry the woman he actually loves. His announcement leads Nan to run away, not just from the party, but also from Tintagel.
Theo doesn’t realise that while he has been craving freedom from Nan, she has been wishing for the same thing. His leaving the title of Duke means that she isn’t a Duchess anymore either and doesn’t have any obligations binding her to Tintagel anymore. While she still has her unborn child, who is technically the heir of Tintagel, no one really knows about it yet, and to keep it that way, Nan decides to run. One would think that this makes things easier for Theo and Lizzy, but considering everything, it’s the exact opposite.
Theo and Lizzy’s Love Story Still Has a Few Hurdles to Cross
In a shocking but somewhat admirable turn of events, Theo gives up his status as the Duke of Tintagel to be able to be with Lizzy. However, even with everything that has happened, one must still consider the point that Theo and Nan aren’t legally separated yet. While he may have given up the title and expressed his desire to divorce Nan, things haven’t become official yet. Since Theo is still a married man, he and Lizzy cannot be together yet, not in the legal sense of the term, at least. What makes things more interesting is that there is a good chance that the divorce is not going to happen anytime soon either. With Theo giving up his position, the question of his successor is the most pressing issue yet.
Because Blanche doesn’t know about Nan’s pregnancy so far, she has already brought Kit, Theo’s estranged cousin, into the picture. However, as Reede points out, Kit doesn’t seem cut out to be the Duke, especially considering that he is described as somewhat of a villain. For now, Blanche thinks giving over the duchy to Kit is the only way to keep things in the family and keep its legacy intact. She decides to stay back to whip Kit into shape to become the Duke of Tintagel. However, since it has been a long time since anyone has seen Kit, it remains to be seen whether Blanche has bitten off more than she can chew with Kit. If that turns out to be the case, she will be desperate to find an alternative.
Once she discovers that Nan had the true heir of Tintagel all along, the Dowager Duchess will be compelled to find her daughter-in-law and get her grandson or granddaughter back, so that she can place the child on the seat of Tintagel and get rid of Kit. Nan is well aware of this, which is why she will want to stay as far away from Theo and Blanche, and with her gone, Theo will not be able to proceed with the divorce, which leaves him and Lizzy back at square one. Moreover, when Theo finds out that Nan is pregnant with his child, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he chooses the child over Lizzy, as he too would feel obligated to keep the title within his family, and this sense of responsibility will pull him back to Nan, making him impossible to end up with the woman he truly loves.
