As the second season of Apple TV+’s ‘The Buccaneers’ inches towards its end, things get tenser by the minute. After a season of broken hearts and secret love affairs, things finally get so serious that all hard feelings are set aside to work together for the greater good. In the previous episode, Nan returned to Tintagel with the hopes of working on a bill that gives more, if not equal, rights to women, at least enough for Jinny to come back home without being considered a criminal. Unbeknownst to the Duchess, her sister has been working on a different plan of her own, which leads to all the trouble that unravels in this episode, titled ‘Every Single Piece of My Heart.’ SPOILERS AHEAD.
Seadown Shows His True Colors, Once Again
The episode opens with a happy Guy buying flowers for Paloma. When he sees Seadown in the marketplace, he runs back home to get Jinny and Freddie, only to discover that not only does Jinny already know about Seadown, but she has already met him a few times and is actually considering going back home with him. As she talks about how he has changed and she can turn him into a better man, Guy tries to knock some sense into her by pointing out that he has been manipulating her again, and her fear of not doing exactly what he wants is what made her run away in the first place. Jinny realises that he is right and agrees to flee, but then, she notices that Freddie is missing.
With Seadown being the only person who could have abducted baby Freddie, Guy and Jinny go back to London, where all the girls are waiting for them. Theo and Richard are already trying to figure out where Seadown is hiding, but their search has not been successful so far. Meanwhile, Nan arranges a meeting with an esteemed journalist in the hopes of turning the narrative in Jinny’s favour. So far, the papers had labelled her as a deranged woman who ran away with Seadown’s child. With the law already against her, it is clear that if she is found out, she will be thrown into prison.
The interview allows Jinny to tell her side of the story, and the next morning, the headline of the newspaper discredits Seadown and paints Jinny as the woman who wants nothing but her son and freedom from an abusive husband. Unbeknownst to the women, Seadown, too, has read the paper. He is hiding in his aunt’s house, and because of the woman being an already obscure figure in society, he doesn’t have to worry about anyone showing up at her house and discovering him. Only his mother knows he is there with the baby, and she seems to be in support of his claim that he should be able to do whatever he wants with his wife, and she has no right to run away with his child.
Relationships Mend in the Face of a Crisis
In between Jinny’s debacle, it is also confirmed that Lizzy did not marry Hector, after all. She gave Hector roughly the same speech that Theo gave her about not loving Hector with all of her heart. This, however, was not the official story given out to everyone else because apparently people are still asking about Lizzy’s health. Being left at the altar has also turned Hector against Lizzy, and the next time they see each other is when Nan calls him for help. She wants him to help her push the bill as soon as possible, so he points her in the direction of a man who can help her with it.
Guy and Theo reconcile, as the latter welcomes him with open arms. It seems that Theo has made his peace with Nan being in love with Guy, especially now he himself is in love with another woman. The old friends talk about where things went wrong, and as Theo accepts that both he and Nan are to be blamed, he also applauds Guy’s sacrifice to protect Jinny and treat Freddie as his own son. Meanwhile, Theo and Lizzy share a short conversation where she talks about how everyone is pitying her since the wedding was called off, while he talks about how torturous it is to be near her but not be able to be with her.
Guy and Nan find themselves in a similar situation. While her main priority is getting Jinny, her son, back along with permanent freedom from Seadown, she is also happy about Guy’s return. She thanks him for bringing Jinny home and staying by her side all this time. However, the shadow of their last conversation also hangs over them, and eventually, Guy apologises to her for his crude words and for making her feel guilty for choosing to help her sister rather than running away with him. Nan appreciates this and assures him that just as she is fighting for Jinny, she will also fight for him. He gladly agrees to fight for her too.
Jinny Falls for Seadown’s Terrible Schemes
From Hector, Nan discovers that an influential member of the Parliament is going to be at the opera that evening. He encourages her to go there and persuade him to rush the bill for women’s rights, though he does point out that the rushing part wouldn’t be so easy, even with the parliamentarian on board. Still, there is no other course of action left, so Nan, accompanied by Conchita, Lizzy, and Mabel, goes to the opera. Meanwhile, Seadown convinces his mother to talk to Jinny and get her to meet him at the opera. Sure enough, when Jinny finds out about it, she rushes to the opera with Guy. Instead of meeting Nan and the girls, she goes directly to Seadown, who starts behaving as if she is attacking him.
It turns out that this had been his plan all along. After he read the column in the newspaper in Jinny’s favour, he decided to paint her deranged again, but this time in public. As a desperate Jinny asks him about Freddie, he makes it look like she is attacking him while he calls out for help. It ends with Jinny slapping him in the face and then being taken away by two men. Before Nan, Guy, and the girls can catch up with them, Jinny has already been thrown in a carriage and driven away to an asylum.
Jinny’s pleas at the asylum go unheard as her husband is the only authority in this matter. She goes from crying to help, to acting out and throwing furniture, to going silent and hungry. When Nan tries to meet her, she is told that the patient’s husband hasn’t signed off on anyone meeting her. By the time Nan comes back with a legal order allowing her to see her sister, Jinny has already given up. When she has “calmed down,” Seadown gives her a glimpse of Freddy from the window, which leads her to accept that she had been unwell, but she is ready to go home now.
Jinny’s Rescue Ends in a Heartbreaking Tragedy
With Jinny gone, the focus is back on finding Seadown. All this trouble makes Richard reflect on how his brother has fallen so far and what it says about himself as the older brother. While Conchita assures him that it’s not fair for him to compare his brother’s evil actions, his mother talks about how the younger one had always been a little different. She mentions that he had always looked up to Richard, the only person he ever wanted to impress. It was because Richard married a rich American that Seadown decided to marry a rich American as well. At the end of the conversation, she reveals exactly where Seadown is, along with Jinny and Freddie.
While Richard and Honoria decide to pay their brother a visit, Seadown tries to get Jinny to go back to the way they were. While she agrees to be his wife in front of society, she tells him that she will never love him, which throws him into another fit of anger where he locks her in her room. When Richard and Honoria arrive at the house, Seadown is surprised but also happy to see them. The duo acts as normally as possible, and while Richard engages him in a conversation, Honoria finds Freddie and slips away with him. When Seadown finds out about it, he becomes angry, but Richard tries to calm him down. And then, Jinny calls out for help, which leads Richard to rush to her.
By the time he gets her out of the room and down the stairs, Seadown manages to find a gun. He threatens Richard to leave Jinny with him, which leads to a tussle between the brothers, while Jinny runs out of the house and hides behind a tree. There comes a point where Seadown seems to have given up, and Richard tries to talk sense to him. But then, he points a gun to his head, having seemingly given up on everything now that he knows that Jinny will never love him again. While Jinny catches her breath, a shot is heard in the distance, and she runs back to the house only to discover that Seadown has killed Richard. Hours later, Jinny shows up at Conchita’s house, battered and barefoot, and breaks the news of Richard’s death, which throws everyone into a storm of tears.
