The Burbs Ending Explained: Does Naveen Die?

Peacock’s ‘The ‘Burbs’ presents an unlikely whodunit with a seemingly haunted house at the center of the narrative. Samira Fisher finds herself trading in the city life for the suburbs in Hinkley Hills after she and her husband, Rob, become new parents. The couple moves into the latter’s freshly vacated childhood home in the Ashfield Place cul-de-sac, which reveals itself to be home to many eccentric characters. Yet, the most peculiar thing about the neighborhood remains the Hinkley House, which is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Alison Hinkley.

Pinned down at home on maternity vacation, Samira befriends her neighbors to pass the time and keeps a keen eye on the strange house on the other side of the road. As such, the mystery becomes all the more intriguing when a new face abruptly moves into the Victorian-era property, and the lawyer discovers the truth about her own husband’s apparent past with the Hinkley girl who disappeared. Rob Fisher’s aging parents decide to spend the rest of their lives retired on a cruise. As a result, they leave the family home to their only son. Fatefully enough, the latter has recently become a father himself, and after experiencing a break-in at their city apartment, he and his wife, Samira, decide to try their luck in the suburbs of Hinkley Hill. Off-the-bat, Samira notices some eccentricities about the neighborhood, specifically an old Victorian house situated across from her new home. Although her husband is fairly dodgy about the topic, as she socializes and becomes a part of Lynn’s wine group, she begins to learn more about the place. As it turns out, the house carries a dark past, as rumors run rampant about the death of young Alison Hinkley on the premises.

Many even believe her parents killed her and buried her in the basement before abandoning the house for the next two decades. Naturally, when the Victorian house abruptly goes up for sale, it draws everyone’s attention. Similarly, they’re intrigued to learn more about the man who ends up swiftly buying up the property. However, on his first night in the neighborhood, the mysterious man ends up calling the cops on Samira because of “suspicious skulking around.” This effectively makes him public enemy number #1 for the lawyer and her friends.

Furthermore, his continued dubious behavior, extreme territoriality around his property, antisocial tendencies, and a weird vested interest in Alison’s disappearance ring warning bells for the others. As she delves deeper into the mystery, she becomes more and convinced that the new neighbor, Gary, must be hiding a bigger secret about Alison. Therefore, she’s in for a surprise when she uncovers the damning history behind the missing girl and her own husband. Rob’s volatile childhood, his apparent teenage friendship with Alison, the latter’s cellphone hidden in his office, and his general avoidance of the topic only point toward one conclusion. He must have some part in the young woman’s disappearance.

Nonetheless, the truth, revealed through a confrontation, turns out to be entirely different. Rob and his best friend, Naveen, were, in fact, best friends with Alison in their teenage years. As such, when the latter, who hated her parents and her hometown, decided to meet up with an older boy she met online, she entrusted the two young boys to cover for her. Tragedy struck when the weekend passed, and Alison still didn’t return home. Yet, eventually, the family discovered a note allegedly left behind by the girl for her parents, explaining that she was running away from home. Since then, rumors have circulated as everyone remains oblivious to the young Hinkley’s fate. As for Rob and Navenn, the pair was deeply affected by the turn of events and ended up burying it in their conscience.

It isn’t until Samira notices a weird detail about Alison, namely her love for Sardines, that she makes a startling connection. Gary’s elusive wife, Betsy, who never leaves the house, also has an eccentric love for the strange food. This compels Rob and Naveen to force a meeting with Betsy, which immediately reveals that the woman is actually their old friend, still alive and far from dead. Initially, Samira and the others assume Alison must be Gary’s captive, stuck in a Stockholm syndrome situation. In time, this assumption is resolved when Alison herself reveals the truth. She and Gary are actually working together to uncover a larger conspiracy at play in Hinkley Hills, where every few years, some poor soul dies or goes missing without explanation.

Over the course of the story, Samira, Rob, and the others try to uncover the real identity of the people who were behind Alison’s kidnapping all those years ago. Even though they manage to uncover and dispose of the real kidnapper, a bigger conspiracy remains afoot. Samira believes the kidnapper wasn’t a solo operative. Instead, she feels there’s a deeper, darker truth hidden in the shadows of the neighborhood. Samira believes the kidnapper was acting only on orders from a hidden group that is obsessed with maintaining a virtuous, secure image of the town. For the same reason, she theorizes that they actively target people they personally deem disruptive to the neighborhood’s social order. This includes rebellious teenage girls like Alison as well as unorthodox high school teachers who go against the status quo.

However, by the end, a beloved character unfortunately becomes the perfect fit for this description. In the aftermath of the death of Alison’s kidnapper, Naveen decides to take the blame for delivering the final blow to the dead man. He does so to keep his friend’s secret and to allow her to remain absent from the legal recount of the events. However, in doing so, he cements himself as someone who directly harmed an agent of this underground secret society. As such, the group behind the kidnapping sends an agent after him: Kate. Under the guise of a date, Kate drugs Naveen and stuffs him in the trunk of her car. By the time Rob and Samira realize their friend’s life is in danger, it’s already too late as Kate drives away into the night. Even though the show leaves Naveen’s fate up in the air, one thing is evident: the young divorcee isn’t yet dead. As a result, the show intentionally uses the character and his ambiguous ending to set up the stage for a potential season 2.

What Really Happened to Alison? Why Was She Kidnapped?

The Hinkley house, and by extension Alison’s past, remains at the center of the narrative for most of the season. The abandoned house and its haunted disposition quickly capture Samira’s attention, compelling her to seek out gossip about the place. This introduces her to Alison, a young woman deeply interwoven in the fabric of the Ashfield Place cul-de-sac. After the young woman went missing years ago, several stories spawned about her disappearance. Despite the version of the myth, everyone seems to steadfastly believe that the young woman died in her teenage years. Yet, the truth behind the matter is infinitely more complicated. In her teenage years, Alison went on an ill-advised adventure. She met an older boy named James on the internet, who claimed to be a Hinkley Hills native who had since moved away from the town.

James also claimed to be involved in music, a passion of Alison’s, which compelled the latter to agree to a meeting in the woods with him. However, the meeting turned out to be a trap set up by a kidnapper. After abducting the teenager, the kidnapper takes her away from the town, well out of State. Nevertheless, Alison is able to win her freedom by freeing herself from her binds using a magic technique she learned from her friend, Naveen. By then, the kidnapper had already sent in a fake letter to the Hinkley family, staging their daughter’s disappearance to appear as a runaway act.

Alison’s parents moved out of the town, and the teenager, who never much liked her oppressive family, decided never to return home. Yet, the ambiguity of the situation always bugged Alison. The abduction and everything that ensued left her traumatized and vengeful. Even so, given her unexpected escape, she had no idea who to blame for her predicament. This is how she meets Gary, another Hinkley Hills native. The latter lost his brother, Hank, following a strange series of events. Prior to his disappearance, his family also received a cryptic message similar to the one the Hinkley family received in 2005.

As a result, Gary and Alison join forces and covertly return to Ashfield Place to uncover the mystery of the kidnappings. Eventually, the truth emerges when the kidnapper seeks Alison out himself in order to finish the job. In the end, the kidnapper is revealed to be Walter, the sanitation worker. Yet, even as Walter chases Alison down, eager to kill her and finish the job he fumbled 20 years ago, it remains evident that the garbage truck driver doesn’t have a personal vendetta against her. Instead, he seems to be a hired hand who is a part of a larger scheme. Initially, Alison is satisfied to uncover her kidnapper’s identity and deliver him to his fate. Even so, the mystery persists of the people higher up on the food chain who hired Walter for the job.

Who Was Walter Working For?

The reveal of Walter’s identity as a kidnapper comes on the heels of a fast-paced chase sequence wherein Alison and Samira find themselves fighting for their lives. After the sanitation worker attacks them at the Hinkley house, having discovered the truth of his past victim’s arrival in town, he’s eager to finish the job. Fortunately, as the two women work together, they’re able to escape through the house’s basement tunnel, which leads them right to Rob’s secret underground bunker. Even though Walter follows them there as well, they’re able to fight him long enough for help to arrive in the form of Rob and Naveen. In the end, the four of them are able to overpower the kidnapper, with Alison delivering the fatalistic kick that kills him.

However, before dying, Walter made one prominent proclamation. Even though he is the kidnapper, he’s simply someone who is “getting paid to take out the trash.” Once Samira gives the case enough thought, she realizes that Walter, who has no real motive to follow the string of victims, was likely a hired hand, executing someone else’s grand plan. Eventually, an epiphany arrives from an unlikely place. Rory, the Fishers’ designated babysitter, gets accepted into the prestigious Hinkley Academy and shares the news with the couple. She also tells them about the uncouth comments Agnes, the former President of the Homeowners’ Association, made about the academy accepting “trash” students this year.

The comments are clearly a deflection born from the fact that her own granddaughter failed to get into the institution. However, this gets Samira’s conspiracy theorist wheels turning. She begins to realize that one of the most prominent threads of connections between the victims of the kidnappings stemmed from their rebellious presence in the Hinkley Hills. For instance, the high school teacher who ominously died one day out of the blue was previously a target of many parents who wanted him out of the school for his unorthodox teaching methods. One of the parents helming the charge was Agnes.

The latter also expressed public dislike for Alison, calling the young girl troublesome. Samira theorizes that Agnes and the others at the Homeowners’ Association are actually behind all the kidnappings. They’re so obsessed with maintaining the neighborhood’s social order as they see fit that they have taken to targeting anyone they deem a threat to their status quo. From there, once the target has been acquired, this group hires outside help, like Walter, to get rid of abduction, murder, or any number of illegal activities. This theory is ultimately proven right when Kate, a member of the HOA, kidnaps Naveen, the newest target on Agnes’ hit list.

Why Did Lynn Have Marty’s Remains in Her Freezer? What Happens to it?

In the season, another prominent storyline unravels in Ashfield Place alongside Alison and the kidnapping ring’s narrative. Lynn, one of the first neighbors whom Samira befriends, has a dreadful secret to keep. The older woman has been grieving the death of her husband, Marty, for six months before the events of the show, to the point where it’s difficult for her to have people over inside her house. However, as time reveals, there’s another reason why she’s disinclined to have company over. Lynn is actually hiding Marty’s remains in her freezer. Yet, what initially seems like a psychopathic revelation has an eccentric but understandable explanation. Marty died six months ago due to a heart attack. Unfortunately, his death occurred while he was inside his house’s massive walk-in fridge. As a result, when Lynn found her husband, he was already dead in the refrigerator.

The tragedy of the death ended up immobilizing the widow. For the same reason, she became incapable of moving the remains. Instead, she decided to mummify him somewhat and keep him stored in the fridge. Her distant kids never enquired about the lack of a funeral, and things eventually went on without a hiccups. However, as time passes, Lynn’s situation becomes increasingly complicated. Since Marty was never given a funeral, his widow never actually got an official death certificate for him. Therefore, the fact that she has been keeping his remains in her house at worst makes her look like a murderer and at best paints her as insane. Either way, it puts Lynn in an impossible situation if she were to be discovered for the crime.

It’s just her luck that she has a standing rivalry with Agnes, who has no qualms about setting the authorities on people she dislikes. Lynn has a short-lived affair with Bill, her rival’s husband. Inadvertently, this leads her to discover the secret about Agens’ apparent affair with Marty when he was alive. This rekindles the rivalry between the two women, and the former HOA president threatens to report Lynn for her permit-less walk-in fridge, a detail she had so far overlooked because of Marty. As such, the widow is in desperate need of a quick solution. Fortunately, she has managed to make a good friend out of a resourceful lawyer in the last few weeks. In the end, Samira helps Lynn hide her husband’s remains in the Hinkley House basement. Although this is a smart solution for now, the discovery that Lauren, Agnes’ daughter-in-law and an apparent Hinkley, plans to renovate the house threatens to unravel this secret in the future.
