Episode 3 of ‘The Chi’s’ season 7 picks up after a short time jump during which the city of Chicago finds a unique equilibrium. Keisha and Tiff’s pregnancy continues smoothly, save for the familial complications that loom over both expecting mothers. While the former deals with the reality of a rapidly growing family with Emmett, the latter continues to find her footing under Alicia’s guidance. Meanwhile, many faces contemplate embracing a new future away from the city. However, one particular individual’s return to the streets threatens to turn everything upside down. Therefore, as this unexpected someone from Jake’s past returns, Nuck’s claim to the mob’s proverbial throne might just be in danger. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Reg is Back From the Dead
In the six months following Douda’s demise, many things seem to have changed within the city. Nuck, who is now running his mob, has a friendly relationship with Alicia, thanks to his budding connection with Tiff. Unbeknownst to them, his gestures of kindness are simply manifestations of his guilt for his direct involvement in Rob’s death. Nonetheless, it seems this murderous secret won’t be the last of Nuck’s worries in the future. While he and the others are busy attending Tiff and Keisha’s joint baby shower/gender reveal party, an old friend of sorts shows up at Jake’s door. As it turns out, his brother, Reg, is actually alive. His demise came all the way back in season 2 when he ended up on Douda’s bad side.
Reg’s exit from the narrative directly affected his younger brother Jake, who eventually found himself drifting under his other brother, Victor’s wing. However, he has apparently been alive all this time. Despite his presumed death, no one ever actually saw his dead body. Therefore, while others jumped to conclusions about his fate, he left the city, leaving his eyes and ears behind. As such, now that Douda is finally gone, dead and buried, he is ready to make a comeback without having to fear for his life. However, it seems his aspirations aren’t simple survival this time around. Reg has a clear plan for overtaking the mob’s reign from Nuck, and it seems he’s planning on taking Jake along with him for the ride. Nevertheless, given everything the mob leader has done to earn his spot, he definitely won’t give up without a fight. Still, Reg’s reappearance, paired with the dark cloud of Rob’s death, seems to spell out trouble in Nuck’s future.
Pastor Zeke Plays a Risky Game
In the months since the scandal broke out about First Lady Tatiana’s relationship with Jake, her husband, Pastor Zeke, closes the chapter on their divorce. Therefore, with the dirt brushed under the carpet, he’s back to running his congregation once again, leaving Charles in the background. His recent sermons particularly seem to be targeted at the sins of the flesh as he continues warning people against them. However, behind closed doors, he’s entertaining a scandalous relationship out of wedlock with a white woman. When Charles inadvertently discovers this affair, his right-hand man encourages him to remain vigilant since his unholy actions could lead to the demise of their megachurch.
Nonetheless, it seems Zeke is unbothered by any potential dangers to his reputation for now. On the other hand, his sermons continue to have an effect on the community for better or for worse. Jamal and Dom, two attendees, have their own takeaways from his most recent preaching about premarital sex. Despite their new relationship, both have attempted to maintain celibacy. Therefore, Zeke’s insistence on finding one’s path through committed partnership compels Jamal to consider the idea of finally tying the knot. Although they both wish for their relationship to prosper, the added bonus of guilt-free sex definitely plays into their haphazard decision. Thus, it seems the couple is ready to take the next giant step in their relationship, no matter how premature it may be.
Jemma and Britney Move to New York
Previously, Maisha had expressed her desire to leave Chicago so that she could give her relationship with Kevin a real shot in LA. Furthermore, the change in scenery would also be a huge improvement for her photography education. As it turns out, she isn’t the only one with plans for a big move. After their short-lived fling, Jemma and Britney continue making music together, still finding their feet as new artists. Eventually, they get the chance to show their work to a New York-based producer, Ali, who inevitably has his fair share of notes for the young artists.
Therefore, Ali encourages them to make the move to New York with the help of a label in order to pursue their craft truly. Although this is a big step, the duo agrees to take it. As such, Jemma says her goodbyes to Jake, who may no longer be the love of her life but will always hold a special place in her heart. This significant life decision also compels the aspiring musician’s father, Marcus, to consider a big move for himself. The father has recently come out of a relationship and continues to be concerned for his daughter’s future. For the same reason, he realizes he may wish to follow her to the new city to keep an eye on her, even if it’s from a distance.
