‘The Cleaning Lady’ has been penning fortuitous demises for many of its characters from day one. As each season brings Thony De La Rosa deeper and deeper into the criminal underworld, the people around her continue to drop dead under increasingly dangerous circumstances. The FBI ASAC, Katherine Russo, feels the personal loss of some of this death and destruction after her subordinate, Agent Garrett Miller, perished at the end of season 2. Since then, she has occupied the narrative void he left behind by Garrett in season 3. Russo’s investigation into Jorge and Ramona Sanchez’s Sin Cara Cartel business continues to give the siblings a run for their money. However, it seems the start of season 4 is prepared to set Russo up for a cruel fate, enticing the audience to grow an interest in actress Liza Weil’s link to the show. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Katherine Russo Meets a Fiery End in Season 4
Katherine Russo has been a part of Thony’s narrative from the very start, one way or another. Initially starting out in the field as Garrett’s co-worker, she remains cool and confident in her authority and plays a prominent role in the Agent’s dogged attempts to take down various criminal organizations. Eventually, once her promotion arrives, her sense of authority elevates, adding a compelling dynamic to the two Agents’ stories. As such, in the earlier seasons, her relationship with Garrett, both their professional standing and the implied romantic connection, carries the weight of her emotional storylines. Nonetheless, Russo becomes the primary FBI Agent to look out for after his death.
As a result, the ASAC begins looking into the Sin Cara Cartel, the central crime organization that takes over the narrative in the wake of Arman’s death. Over the course of season 3, she continues to come closer and closer to capturing the head of the crime family, Ramona Sanchez. Eventually, she succeeds in her goal, managing to put the crime boss behind bars for her various illustrious crimes. Furthermore, she promises to save the day for the De La Rosa family by sponsoring the visa applications for the entire family, including Fiona and her son, Chris. Consequently, everything seems to be falling into place for the FBI Agent.
Nonetheless, episode 1 of season 4, titled ‘My Way,’ brings a jarring new reality for Russo. While the Agent is on her way to a meeting with Thony, who has just finished up her immigration interview, a few cars intercept her journey. As she’s driving, a cowboy hat-wearing assassin from one of the cars seals her fate by tossing a petrol bomb into Russo’s car. Thus, in the ensuing explosion that follows, the Agent meets her bitter and abrupt end. Although it isn’t instantly evident, this kill order has been issued by Ramona Sanchez, as revenge for the Agent’s involvement in her arrest.
Liza Weil’s Time With The Cleaning Lady Concluded With Her Character’s Storyline
Liza Weil had been a part of ‘The Cleaning Lady’ since its first season. Her character, Katherine Russo, is first introduced in episode 3, titled ‘Legacy,’ and continues to remain relevant to the plot for multiple seasons to come. Nonetheless, it seems with season 4, the actress and character’s run with the Fox show has finally come to an end. Russo’s early death in the season sets the tone for the new precarious adventure that awaits Thony and her family. Her assassination, particularly, underlines the cartel doctor’s straying connection to the legal side of things as her reliance on the FBI Agent for protection shifts to Jorge instead. Therefore, even though Russo’s fate may be a jarring one for her character, it seems to be in service of the protagonist’s cresting story.
For the same reason, there’s nothing that suggests Liza Weil’s exit from ‘The Cleaning Lady’ was born from anything other than the natural end of her character’s on-screen tale. The actress is best known for her work as Bonnie Winterbottom in the critically acclaimed show ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ and for her role as Paris Geller in the cult classic ‘Gilmore Girls.’ Currently, she’s looking forward to the release of her upcoming dark comedy film ‘Lunar Sway,’ in which she takes on the role of the estranged mother to Noah Parker’s character, Cliff. Although it isn’t confirmed, the slightly overlapping filming dates between this project and season 4 of the crime show could’ve also contributed to her departure from the latter. Either way, fans of her work, who are sure to miss her daily dose in ‘The Cleaning Lady’ as Russo, can keep up with her artistic career through this Nick Butler movie.
