Duke Nicholson and William H. Macy’s ‘The Deputy’ Starts Filming in Mississippi in November

One of Victor Gischler’s celebrated books will be adapted to the screen in the Magnolia State! ‘The Deputy,’ starring Duke Nicholson and William H. Macy, will start filming in Mississippi in November. The project marks Matt Sukkar’s feature debut as a director. Carlo Bernard wrote the screenplay. The ensemble also includes Tiffany Haddish, Stephen Dorff, Jake Weary, and Julia Fox.

The film follows Deputy Toby Sawyer (Nicholson), who is abruptly awakened by his superior, Chief Krueger (Macy), and assigned the seemingly simple task of watching over a deceased body until the coroner arrives. However, things take a drastic turn when the body mysteriously vanishes. What begins as a routine assignment quickly spirals into a high-stakes investigation, with Toby uncovering years of hidden corruption within the town.

The narrative progresses with Toby discovering that several of his colleagues, including Deputy Billy Banks (Dorff), have been covering up wrongdoings for years. Amid mounting tension, Deputy Amanda Jackson (Haddish) emerges as the only ally Toby can rely on. Faced with an intricate web of lies, Toby must untangle the truth to protect his career and avoid becoming the next casualty in the town’s long-standing cycle of corruption.

Nicholson portrayed Sydney in ‘Traveling Light,’ in which a father, working as an Uber driver during the pandemic, searches for his missing son and encounters a cult during a chaotic ceremony. The actor also appeared as Derrick Millebran in ‘Crisis,’ which follows an undercover cop, a professor, and a grieving mother crossing paths amid the opioid epidemic.

Macy’s recent roles include Trevathan in ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ and Summerhayes in ‘Ricky Stanicky.’ The actor portrayed Sam in ‘Maybe I Do,’ a film in which a couple’s decision to introduce their parents reveals unexpected family connections, leading to conflicting views on marriage.

Haddish is known for her standout roles in ‘Girls Trip’ and ‘Night School.’ Dorff gained recognition for his performances in ‘Leatherface’ and the iconic ‘Blade.’ Weary appeared in projects such as ‘Trigger Warning’ and the horror sequel ‘It – Chapter Two.’ Fox garnered attention with her performances in ‘Uncut Gems’ and the provocative drama ‘PVT Chat.’

Notable productions such as ‘The Ritual Killer,’ ‘The System,’ and ‘The Inspection’ were previously shot in Mississippi.
