Kim Se-dol is a Retired Go Player Legend Currently Serving as an Assistant Professor
Kim Se-dol is revered across South Korea and around the globe for his unmatched brilliance in the ancient and complex game of Go. He dominated the game’s competitive arena by winning 19 major international championships throughout his career. The player’s legacy further received global recognition in March 2016, when he played a historic five-match game against the Artificial Intelligence (AI) AlphaGo. Although he lost the series, he won in the fourth game, becoming the only human to defeat the said AI at that time. However, on November 19, 2019, Se-dol decided to retire from the professional arena of the game. He explained in his statement that although he was the top player, the rise of AI had irreversibly shifted the game’s landscape.
However, just one month later, Se-dol returned for a symbolic three-game face-off against HanDol, an AI developed by a Korean enterprise. He demonstrated his skills again and emerged victorious in two of the three rounds.
