The Eternaut Season 2: What to Expect?

Netflix’s ‘The Eternaut’ wraps up its season 1 on a ground-shaking cliffhanger. The Spanish show charts the journey of Juan Salvo, a man who is searching for his family in the middle of an apocalyptic invasion. The perceived end of the times arrives in Buenos Aires with a deadly snowfall and giant crittering bugs that seem intent on wiping out the population from this section of the globe. Nonetheless, as Juan and a handful of other survivors continue to brave this lethal new reality, they stumble across a much more menacing truth. Thus, by the end of the season, our protagonist makes some impossible revelations about himself and his past, which are bound to haunt him into the next season. Even though there hasn’t yet been an official update on a renewal for the show, the air remains abuzz with excitement for a continuation. As such, should a season 2 get renewed, we can expect it to hit the screens as early as summer of 2027.

The Eternaut Season 2 Will Likely Follow Juan and His Fellow Survivors Into a New Battle

At the end of season 1, Juan Salvo is at the precipice of a life-changing revelation. Throughout the story, the man often experiences a cryptic sense of déjà vu, mixed with flashes of his past and even present events that have yet to unfold. Thus, when he witnesses the mysterious Alien invader, Hand, controlling the beastly bugs and humans as its own mindless army, it opens his eyes to a horrible truth. Juan has already lived through these events. From this we can conclude that the survivor is stuck in some twisted time loop that is keeping him trapped within this damning fate of fighting to save his family from an alien invasion that is bound to end in tragedy.

The ending and several other beats of the show diverge slightly from its source material, Héctor Germán Oesterheld’s science fiction comic from the 1950s and 60s. Even so, the adaptation has so far been starkly faithful to Oesterheld’s work, retaining similar themes and narrative framework. For the same reason, fans can expect season 2 to follow in the footsteps of the author’s work as he penned it in his original comics. If this proves to be true, we can expect a majority of the central cast, including lead Ricardo Darín, César Troncoso, Carla Peterson, Mora Fisz, Andrea Pietra, and Ariel Staltari, to have almost definitive returns to the show. Additionally, Mosca, a late addition in the story, might also go on to play a significant role if he follows in the footsteps of his historian literary counterpart.

However, things are less certain for actors like Marcelo Subiotto, whose character, Lucas, met a fatal end, and others like Orianna Cárdenas (Inga) and the actor behind Pablo, whose characters both found an ambiguous ending. Nonetheless, since the ending of season 1 introduces a time travel/dimension-hopping angle into the narrative, dead gone characters like Lucas and perhaps even Russo, could possibly return to the show in varying degrees. Ultimately, the fates of the characters will be as uncertain in season 2 as the fate of Buenos Aires has been so far. Nonetheless, if there’s one thing fans can rely on, it’s Juan and his fellow survivors’ relentless pursuit of freedom by overthrowing their extraterrestrial oppressors.

The Eternaut Season 2 is Expected to Include a Confrontation at the River Plate Club

Given the historical literary roots of ‘The Eternaut,’ there are high expectations attached to the show as a whole. Therefore, fans will be expecting season 2 to bring to the screen some of the most iconic scenes and plotlines from the comic novel. This will include an expansion of the alien invasion storyline, revealing the dreadful reality of the Hand and its automated army of brainwashed humans. Furthermore, we’ll get to know more about the fates of the survivors who are stuck at Campo de Mayo, an army base that has likely already been overtaken by the alien invaders. This puts characters like Clara, Elena, and Ana in the direct line of fire, which would set Juan up for another rescue mission with his family as his number one priority.

Yet, even more exciting and thrilling narratives seem to be in store for fans of ‘The Eternaut.’ In a recent interview with Vogue Spain, Ricardo Darín has spoken about his expectations for a season 2, something he has claimed to be an inevitability due to contractual and moral obligations. The actor spoke about how excited he is for the show to tackle the legendary battle at River Plate, a professional sports club in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This battle is a highlight of Héctor Germán Oesterheld’s work. Therefore, the idea of its addition into the next installment in the series promises great things for the coming season.

We Will Learn More About Juan’s Relationship With Time in Season 2

For the most part, season 1 of ‘The Eternaut’ focuses on the survival aspect of Juan Salvo’s story. From creating homemade waterproof suits to face the deadly snowfall to fighting giant armies of bugs with nothing but wit and a few explosives, the narrative remains ripe with post-apocalyptic problem-solving action-heavy sequences. Therefore, by the time the ending rolls around, the startling introduction of time-traveling elements effectively pulls the rug from under the audience’s feet.

However, while season 1 left the plot twist open-ended on a cliffhanger, season 2 would surely have to fill in the blanks and provide more context and explanation for Juan’s abilities. As such, Juan’s narrative can be expected to become a lot more complicated and intriguing. Not only will a potential next season have to explore the implications of Juan’s entrapment in a time loop, but it will also provide the backstory behind these abilities. Consequently, narrative elements like spaceships and time machines will likely become a part of the protagonist’s story. Thus, all things considered, fans can expect the show to up the ante, with higher danger and higher stakes in season 2.
