Fox’s high-stakes trivia competition ‘The Floor’ has always kept the audience in awe with sudden twists in the game. Season 3, episode 8, titled ‘Let’s Get Physical,’ picks up right where episode 7 left off. In a shocking turn of events, Brian and Mike both walked away with $10,000 each in their pockets. This increased the anticipation of knowing the game is about to change again. At present, all eyes are on Mike because it is his time to make the big decision of whether he wants to stay and play another duel or adopt a different strategy and return to the floor.
The First Duel of the Night Begins With a Pivotal Moment in the Season
The episode kicks off with host Rob Lowe listing down the available categories for Mike to duel against – Competition Shows, Marvel, Physics, and Song of the Year. He makes the bold choice to continue playing and chooses to challenge Anna, whose expertise is the former. He declares that Brian has been holding the most number of tiles for too long, so his strategy is to engage in just one more duel. After all, if he wins, Brian will no longer be the one dominating the Floor. The first duel of the night commences, and it is a very tight battle as the opponents remain at each other’s necks at every turn. However, ultimately, Mike wins and is now the new leader on the Floor. Once again, the decision on how he wants to proceed is up to him.
As Mike considers his options, he remarks that he is not a huge fan of songs, and Marvel intimidates him. So, he sets his eyes on the new category in his options, Robin’s expertise of State Quarters. He reveals that he has studied this topic, and it has been a fairly easy one. As Robin arrives on the stage, he compliments himself by stating that Mike has chosen a strong competitor. As soon as the second duel begins, it becomes clear that this will be a fight to the end. Each competitor refuses to let any chance slip through their hands, and it becomes a back-and-forth duel. As it reaches its climax, Robin ends up losing by just mere seconds. As the host arrives, he remarks that it was an incredible battle. With his victory, Mike has secured an astounding 17 pieces of the floor and gained a time boost. His previously inherited Rom-com category then makes him contemplate if he wants to challenge any of the available options.
However, Mike notes that it will be a risk for him at this point. Hence, he chooses to take his time boost and return to his territory. He also mentions that he has proven that he is truly a formidable player. Meanwhile, in a confessional, Alex remarks that his knowledge of Rom-com makes him very confident that he can easily take down Mike, if given the opportunity. For the third duel, the Randomizer is activated for the first time in this episode. It stops under self-proclaimed Water Brands expert Katie, who can choose to duel either Anatomy or Amazon. She discloses that she considers Toni, whose category is Anatomy, to be very smart, and she also has a time boost. So, she concluded that her most feasible option would be to challenge Mariana with her Amazon category. Rob notes that both of them are “rookies” on the stage before asking why Mariana had chosen her particular category. She divulges that she is from Brazil and has visited Amazon, so she is confident about it.
The Battles Grow Intense as the Night Progresses
When the duel begins, the pressure slowly gets to Katie, and she passes on one question after another, taking victory out of her reach. In other words, Mariana, succeeds in defending her category. When Rob mentions that she has inherited the category of Water Brands, she jokes that she would make her family quite proud based on how much she has picked up on the topic. With the new options of Teen Drama and Anatomy laid before her, Mariana makes her next move. She decides to challenge Emily on her category of Teen Dramas. When Emily arrives on the stage, the host asks her why she has chosen this category. She reveals that besides being a real estate agent, she is also an actress. Furthermore, she expresses her shock that Mariana chose to challenge her because she had promised to go back to the floor if she won. As the match unfolds, Mariana is defeated in the brutal battle and ends up going home.
With her win, Emily claims three pieces on the floor and inherits Water Brands as her category. After looking at her present options, she makes the calculated decision to go back to the Floor and defend her newly-gained territory. Yet, Alex surprisingly remarks that he assumed she would come for him next. To select the next challenger, the Randomizer is activated again. This time, it lands on Katina, who is an expert in the category of Physics since she has been a STEM educator for 10 years. Among the three options she has, she challenges Mike in his Rom-com category. She reveals that she wants to create an impact and deliver a strong message to the other competitors. With just four duels left for the night, Rob asks Mike if he wants to use the time boost. He agrees to use it to his advantage, and the duel finally begins.
From the sidelines, Katina’s neighbors speak among themselves, saying that she has just sacrificed herself. This turns out to be true as she fails to keep up in the duel and keeps on passing until the conclusion becomes clear as a day. After the battle ends, Rob notes that Mike choosing to use his time boost for this match was definitely a huge loss of time since he could have easily won without it too. As Katina is about to leave, she points out something very interesting. She mentions that although she has lost the game, Mike has now inherited the Physics category, which will be her impact on ‘The Floor.’ Rob agrees with her and tells Mike that everyone has been avoiding this category, but now, he has been forced into it. In the end, the competitor decides to return to his territory.
Despite Some Quick Decisions and Duels, It Remains Unclear Who Will Win the Prize Tonight
Rob announces that Mike now has the highest number of pieces on the Floor. In addition, he mentions that it is now only a matter of time before it becomes clear if he will take the episodic prize of $20,000 back home or if someone will challenge him. Wasting no time, he asks for the Randomizer to be activated again. It selects Ashley, and without any hesitation, she chooses to challenge Shane from the category of Parades. She reveals that her strategy is to go for the competitors who she believes she can defeat. Since she has seen how Shane plays, she is confident that she can beat him. However, as the duel begins, the reality of the competition slowly kicks in. Ashley falters with her answers and, ultimately, ends up losing. Both contestants agree that it was indeed a tough battle. Nevertheless, with his victory, Shane is happy since he now has 3-floor pieces and the category of Beyoncé Songs.
Rob announces that there are only two more duels to go for the night. Now, with a staggering $20,000 at stake, the big decision is in Shane’s hands. As the host announces his options, Shane reminds everyone that Mike has just inherited his Physics category, and he did not get any chance to prepare for it. Although he mentions that he did not make any preparations for that category either, he discloses something that turns the game around completely. Shane divulges that he has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and hence, he chooses to challenge Mike.
As the realization slowly sinks in, Mike immediately regrets using his time boost in the previous duel. Without any safety net to fall back on, he must now defend himself in a category that he is not very well-versed in. Rob makes it very clear that Shane now has not only the cash prize but also a possible 21 pieces on the floor on the line. The duel commences with the challenge of identifying the physics-related person, principle, or item on the screen. Both the competitors fight for control, but, to his dismay, Mike ends up bidding goodbye. The host excitedly announces that, finally, there is a new leader in the show with 21 pieces of territory. On the other hand, he also acknowledges that Mike has fought pretty hard, and he agrees that it was really nice to fight against a worthy opponent.
As the Night Comes to an End, the Final Duel Determines The Episode’s Winner
With just one duel left for the night, Rob turns to Shane to hear what his decision will be. He has two options: either fight again and claim his time boost alongside the $20,000 prize or return to defend his category. Shane jokes that his six-year-old daughter is his coach, and if he does not try to hold this cash price just a little bit longer, she might get angry at him. So, he decides to return to his position in the hope that the Randomizer will not land near him, but to no avail. For the final duel of the night, the Randomizer gets back to work and selects Jake, whose expert category is Nerdy Characters. Rob points out that if he wants to win the episodic prize, he would have to challenge Shane.
The other participants start cheering for Jake, urging him to take on Shane. He discloses that he has been waiting for the Randomizer to pick him, and his strategy is to aim for the prize money. Since this is his golden chance, he does indeed challenge Shane. Rob remarks that this is the biggest battle of the night, while Shane jokes that the other participants should think about his daughter. However, he soon reveals a secret: that he actually knows more about the category of Beyoncé Songs than anyone might expect him to. With the players in place, Jake and Shane begin the final duel of the night. As the pictures, song names, and related items start appearing on the screen, Jake’s nerves get the best of him, and he passes on several of them.
The opportunity to win the game gradually slips through his fingers. Since Shane emerges victorious, his territories now total up to 22 pieces. Rob declares that he is the winner of the $20,000 for the night and takes a moment to appreciate Jake’s gameplay. As the latter exits the show, the host turns his attention to the star of the night and congratulates him. When he asks Shane if he did this for his daughter, he agrees and reiterates his love for her. Rob then lets him know that he has inherited the category of Nerdy Characters. However, he truthfully admits that he has no idea what it really entails. Yet, with the competition finally coming to an end for the night, he does have some time to research it. As the game continues, the pressure is slowly mounting on the contestants, so with just 34 of them left on the floor, only time will tell whether Shane will continue to reign over the territories or someone else will rise to the occasion.
