In Netflix’s ‘The Great Flood,’ a mother must protect her son as everything around her is submerged in water whose level continues to rise. The protagonist is Gu An-na, who lives in a third-floor apartment with her son, Ja-in. One day, she wakes up to discover that the incessant rains have caused the water to rise to her level and enter her apartment, and from the looks of it, the water is not going to stop. As she tries to find a way to survive this ordeal, a shocking series of events comes to light, particularly in the context of An-na’s research work. The film concludes on a surprising note, leaving room for further exploration of the story. So far, the film is considered a standalone, and no sequel has been greenlit by Netflix. If the streaming service decides to continue Ja-in and An-na’s story, ‘The Great Flood 2’ is expected to be released sometime in 2027. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Great Flood 2 Will Explore the Story of a New Earth
Halfway through ‘The Great Flood,’ it is revealed that humanity was destroyed by the catastrophic flood, leaving only a handful of scientists to ensure the survival of the human race. An-na and her team are tasked with finding a way to create human babies outside of a womb. This means that kids like Ja-in are created in a lab, and then an Emotion Engine, developed by An-na, is used to make sure that they behave as humans do. Eventually, they do the same to create mothers as well, which is where the whole simulation thing in the second part of the movie comes into the picture. By the end, the Emotion Engine is fully developed, and both the mother and son are ready to continue their journey. In the end, we see An-na and Ja-in in a spaceship headed towards the Earth, but they are not the only ones.

The idea had always been to repopulate the Earth with the synthetic humans, and that’s what the sequel could focus on. While the simulation has taught An-na what it means to be a mother and how she can be the mother that she needs to be for Ja-in, it is now time to enter reality and see how she and Ja-in fare. The simulation retreated on the final day of her life, but the Earth that she is headed towards now has its own set of challenges, which An-na has no idea about. Moreover, now, she must also learn to live with the others, who have been sent on the same journey after going through thousands of simulation loops of their own. The sequel will show the audience what the Earth looks like now, and will focus on An-na and the others as they try to build everything again from scratch.
Another thing that the story might focus on is Isabela Labs. This is the place that An-na worked for, and they are the ones who sent the scientists on the spaceship and gave them the resources to create the labs and the simulations that will ensure the survival of the human race. We may gain more insight into how they discovered the impending apocalypse and, more importantly, how they plan to ensure a smooth transition back to Earth. Despite all the drama and extended plot lines, the film retains the emotional core of its predecessors. It was the story about a mother’s love for her son, and this will continue to remain at the heart of the sequel as well. To sum it up, the future will continue to be physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging for An-na, who must now use all the skills at her disposal to give a bright future to her son and humanity.
The Great Flood 2 Will Expand the Cast to Include More Interesting Storylines
What makes ‘The Great Flood’ such a compelling movie to watch is that it limits its focus to a couple of characters. An-na takes the center stage, appearing in almost every scene of the movie and carrying its emotional core to make an impact on the viewer. As the sequel will continue her journey, we expect Kim Da-mi to reprise her role. However, her story wouldn’t be complete without Ja-in, which means the young actor, Kwon Eun-seong, will also be present in the sequel. Another major character in ‘The Great Flood’ is Park Hae-soo’s Son Hee-jo. While he appears in the simulations, he dies in real life, which means there is a good chance he will not return for the sequel, especially if the story deviates from the simulation plot point and focuses on reality.

Because his memories are not retrieved, or at least, we don’t see it happen, there will be no way to make a replica and bring him back. Still, the sequel might use flashbacks to explain certain aspects of the story, which might open the space for the return of the ‘Squid Game’ actor. Since the story is expected to include more parent-child pairs like An-na and Ja-in, the cast will expand considerably, this time giving more focus to the supporting characters. Their individual journeys will be explored, with an intersection with the fate of the main characters. At the same time, the spotlight might also turn towards the scientists on the spaceships, which means that more supporting characters will be added to deliver a fully rounded cast.
