The Hunting Wives: Is Holy Horizon a Real Church? Is Coyote Joe’s a Real Place?

In Netflix’s ‘The Hunting Wives,’ the peace and quiet of a Texan town is upended when a young girl is found murdered in the woods. While her death throws everyone into a state of suspicion, tension had been simmering between the residents even before the crime came to light. At the heart of it is a group of women, led by Margo Banks, who welcomes newcomer Sophie O’Neil with the intentions that turn out to be more than simple friendship. As Sophie gets to know the town, Coyote Joe’s bar and Holy Horizon church become two places where all the drama seems to unravel.

Coyote Joe’s is a Real Bar, But It’s Not in Texas

The events in ‘The Hunting Wives’ take place in a fictional town called Maple Brook, which is located somewhere in Texas. Being a Texan is an important part of the identity of several characters, and a lot of plot twists are informed by it. However, when it came to filming the show, the creators turned towards the state of North Carolina, which is where the entire season was filmed. Charlotte was one of the major filming locations for the show, and this is also where the real Coyote Joe’s is located, at 4621 Wilkinson Boulevard. The place is known for its lively atmosphere that attracts a large number of people.

It is known for its myriad of events, including live concerts that feature upcoming bands. They also have days reserved for ladies’ nights, and additionally, they offer line dance lessons. The bar was used to tape several scenes for the Netflix series, but while a lot of other locations are renamed in the show, Coyote Joe’s name was kept as is. Apart from filming, the bar also became a regular haunt for the cast who spent almost every weekend there, hanging out and having fun together. Malin Akerman, who plays Margo Banks, revealed that even when they were done shooting there, the cast liked it so much that they would come around there often and even indulged in a two-step dance with the cowboys.

The Fictional Holy Horizon is Filmed in a Real North Carolina Church

The Holy Horizon church in Maple Brook plays an important role in displaying the dynamics between the characters, be it in their placement in the community or their political ambitions. Much like Maple Brook, Holy Horizon is a fictional place. However, filming the scenes featuring the church took the show’s cast and crew to a real church in Charlotte, North Carolina called The Park Church, located on 6029 Beatties Ford Road. Functional since 1913, the church has gone through many phases and evolved over time.

The one thing that has remained constant about it is its sense of community, which is also reflected in the way Holy Horizon is presented in the Netflix show, though the real church comes with much less drama than the fictional one. Apart from its religious importance for the town, the church also focuses on other endeavors regarding educating and informing the people. Apart from Sunday school, they have actively spread awareness about voting, arranged things like the Young Adult Bowling Fellowship, and hosted authors of religious and devotional books, among other things. The church also has the Park Cafe, which serves delicious food as part of post-service dining.
