Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard 2’ expands the mythology of the immortals who have been walking the Earth for a very long time. The first film begins with the arrival of a new immortal in the form of Nile Freeman, who is introduced to her new reality by Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy. Her group includes Joe, Nicky, and Booker, who joined the group at different points in time. Then there is Quynh, who was lost to the bottom of the ocean centuries ago. In the sequel, two more immortals are brought to the fore, revealing a much greater scope of the movies and their universe. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Andy is Roughly 6700 Years Old
Andromache of Scythia is believed to be the oldest immortal, at least in the first film. When asked how old she is, she just says, “Too old.” She mentions that she has been alive for so long that there was a time when she was worshipped as a goddess. Considering that she is the oldest of the lot, it is clear that she must be at least a few thousand years old. While the film doesn’t specify her age, the comics make things much clearer.
She is revealed to be around 6700 years old, give or take, around the time the events of ‘The Old Guard’ take place. At one point, it is mentioned that she spent three thousand years by herself before crossing paths with another immortal. This explains why once she started finding them, she brought them into the group as quickly as possible. She understands what loneliness can do to an immortal, and she didn’t want the others to suffer the torture she did for three millennia.
Discord Could be Over 9000 Years Old
For a very long time, it was believed that Andy was the oldest immortal. According to Copley’s research, she is even believed to be the first immortal. However, in the sequel, Tuah reveals that there is another immortal who has been walking the Earth for much longer. She is so old that she has changed her name so many times over the years that he doesn’t even know what she was originally called. Now, however, she goes by the name of Discord. Tuah reveals that Discord is older than any of them, even Andy, and she is the first immortal to have ever existed. Considering that Andy herself is touching 7000 years in three centuries, it would not be remiss to assume that Discord has a couple more thousand years on her.
As the oldest immortal, she has seen it all. She has also been aware of the existence of others, but she has preferred to live in secret. She knew that once the humans figured out what she was, they would turn against her, and she didn’t want to risk that. Tuah reveals that she was the first immortal he met, though their paths diverged following the witch trials, where they witnessed Quynh’s tragic fate. While he lost himself in his books, she spent the next few centuries amassing wealth, as she knew that this was the only way she could become untouchable to humans.
Nile Freeman is in Her Late 20s
The youngest of all the immortals, Nile Freeman is 26 years old when she discovers that she cannot die. She was born in 1994 and goes about most of her life not realising what is in store for her. When she dies during a mission as a US Marine, she immediately faces ostracisation and risks being thrown into a research facility where she will be experimented upon. Thanks to Andy’s timely arrival, things never get that bad for her. What makes Nile more interesting is that she is revealed to be the last immortal. This means that there will be no more immortals after her, and she is doomed to walk the Earth alone until death comes to her naturally.
Booker is More Than 200 Years Old
Before Nile shows up, Sebastien le Livre, aka Booker, is the youngest one in the group. He is revealed to be around 250 years old in the first film. Born sometime in the 1770s, he once served as a soldier in Napoleon’s army. However, during the war against Russia, he decided that he didn’t want to fight anymore, so he deserted his unit, or at least tried to. He was found and hanged to death, which is when it was revealed that he couldn’t die. Soon, he was found by Andy, who welcomed him to her family, and the two have been together since then.
Joe and Nicky Have Been Together for 900 Years
There are many ways to find one’s soulmate, but rarely, if ever, does someone find the love of their life after repeatedly killing them. This is what happened for Joe and Nicky, who were born Yusuf Al-Kaysani and Nicoló of Genoa. They met each other during the Crusades, fighting for the opposite side. Considering that the First Crusade began in 1096, it is fair to assume that the duo were born sometime in the 1060s or 1070s to be old enough to fight in the war and die. This puts both of them at around 950 years of age.
In a romantic turn of events, the duo fought and killed each other on the battlefield. When both of them came back to life, they fought and killed each other all over again. They repeated this cycle a couple of more times before they realised that neither of them could kill the other. The only thing left to do after this was fall in love, and sure enough, the couple has been together since then.
Quynh Could be Around 2000 Years Old
One of the older immortals of the bunch, Quynh’s age is not specified in the movie, but it is hinted that she and Andy had been together for a very long time before they were separated during the witch trials. In ‘The Old Guard’ comic books, Quynh is called Noriko, who met Andy sometime in the 7th century. However, by this time, she had already been alive long enough to be on the brink of being consumed by loneliness.
In the film, this time period is believed to be at least a thousand years, but the books increase this time period significantly, suggesting that Noriko might be around a couple of thousand years old at least. The movie changes the Byzantine setting of their meeting to them crossing paths in the middle of a desert. However, this doesn’t change the fact that when she and Andy met, they became each other’s soulmates, the likes of which they would never find again in their lifetime.
Tuah is More than 2000 Years Old
Tuah is introduced in ‘The Old Guard 2’ when Andy needs his help in finding their new enemy. When asked about his age, he reveals it to be somewhere near 2300. He met Andy after the witch trials, where Quynh was trapped in an iron maiden and thrown into the ocean. The two have been friends since then, but unlike other immortals, Tuah prefers to be left alone. This is why, even after spending centuries together, Andy doesn’t tell Joe, Nicky, and Booker about him. In his solitude, he has dedicated his time to jotting down the history of each immortal that exists on the Earth. While he may have spent his time with books, he remains an accomplished warrior who can jump into action whenever the need arises.
