The Luckiest Man in America: Is Patricia Based on a Michael Larson’s Real Wife?

‘The Luckiest Man in America’ charts a story about a historic game show episode, wherein one man manages to nullify all odds and dominate a game of chance. Michael Larson is a man from Ohio who arrives at the CBS Studio in his ice cream truck to audition for the television game show “Press Your Luck.” After he catches the attention of Bill, an executive, he secures a spot as a contestant in the upcoming episode. However, much to everyone’s disbelief, on the day of the filming, Michael goes on an odds-defying winning streak. He earns up to hundreds of thousands from a show where he has a one-in-six chance of losing everything.

Although the method behind the contestant’s impressive madness remains unknown, his motivation remains apparent in the way he talks of his wife, Patricia, and their daughter, Susie. Given the real-life basis of this film in the actual Michael Larson and his time on the real ‘Press Your Luck,’ fans are bound to grow intrigued by Patricia’s on-screen character and her possible off-screen counterparts.

Patricia Seems to be Partially Inspired by Michael Larson’s Personal Life

Much of ‘The Luckiest Man in America’ is based on the real-life incident that unfolded on ‘Press Your Luck’ in 1984, when Michael Larson entered the game show as a contestant. However, even though the biographical adaptation stays faithful to the reality of the events, it also occasionally diverges from reality. In its depiction of Patricia, Michael’s on-screen ex-wife, the film dabbles in both fact and fiction. In real life, Larson did indeed discuss his daughter and his own struggles to buy her presents for her birthday during the audition process prior to the episode’s filming. Furthermore, the aforementioned daughter, Jennifer Kornell, had her sixth birthday a day before her father’s episode on the show was filmed.

Yet, little is known about Kornell’s mother and Larson’s former partner. Therefore, it’s difficult to speculate whether or not Patricia’s character took any tangible inspirations from the real-life woman. Alternatively, in 1984, during the winning contestant’s appearance on ‘Press Your Luck,’ the contestant was dating another woman named Teresa Dinwitty. Eventually, she went on to become the former ice cream truck driver and air conditioning repairman’s common-law wife. Nonetheless, as per reports, their relationship ended in the early to mid-1990s, following a period of personal and financial turmoil after a reported burglary of $50000.

Reportedly, during this time, Dinwitty fled from their shared home with her kids until Larson eventually left. Furthermore, reports also suggest that the latter’s then-wife also witnessed him at the height of his obsession with figuring out the trick behind ‘Press Your Luck.’ Although Patricia’s character remains fairly shrouded in unaddressed mystery, the tense relationship between her and Michael could have possibly been inspired by these real-life events. Nonetheless, aside from these tidbits of realistic elements, Patricia’s character on her own seems to be largely fictitious. For the most part, it’s her connection to Susie and her history with Michael that enables her character to bring a sense of realism to the near-biographical film.
