‘The Map of Longing’ or ‘El mapa de los anhelos’ is a heartwarming tale of grief, hope, and redemption. Grieving the loss of her sister Lucy, 22-year-old Greta Álvarez finds her life changed completely after meeting Will Tucker, a young man in his 20s. Will explains that before her death, Lucy charged him with a special mission to introduce Greta to a game called “The Map of Longing,” which consists of a series of tasks and letters Lucy prepared.
As Greta works through the tasks with Will’s help, they unexpectedly fall for one another, leading to a profound emotional reckoning and a shared journey of healing. Despite how much they love each other, Will and Greta are confronted by unresolved emotional issues that continue to trouble them in unforeseen ways, putting their futures at risk. The Map of Longing Plot Synopsis
Greta Álvarez is a 22-year-old girl who is grieving the recent death of her beloved elder sister, Lucy. Having battled leukemia from a young age, Lucy’s only real hope was when Greta was born, making her a candidate for stem cell donation. After spending more than two decades building a special bond with her sister, Lucy finally succumbs to cancer. Greta is overwhelmed by grief and guilt and believes that her future will be hopeless. This sadness also extends to her mother, Rosi, and her father, Jacobo. Greta’s only real friend is her maternal grandfather, who always supports her in moments of need. Eventually, she is visited by a stranger named Will Tucker, who tells her that he was Lucy’s friend and that she entrusted him with something important. He shows her a box named “The Map of Longing,” a game-based wooden box that contains several tasks and letters designed by Lucy.
Will is now responsible for ensuring that Greta completes the tasks, and each successful task makes both the younger sister and Will eligible to receive a letter. Initially hesitating to engage, Greta finally accepts and lets Will take charge of the game of tasks. Will works at a local bar and has a few secret emotional issues of his own. Greta occasionally hooks up with Tino, a former friend of her sister. She also takes a job as a dog walker for Ana, Rosi’s friend. As part of her first task, the younger sister takes part in a grief support session with strangers, after which Will gives her one of Lucy’s letters. The second task instructs Greta to find the beauty in life. She and Will go to Triple Point, where three international borders meet. Though she completes tasks under Will’s supervision, Greta still doesn’t trust him, as he refuses to say much about himself.
After completing the second task, Greta and Will are forced to spend the night in a hotel room due to severe weather, and romantic tension builds. However, the two sleep apart, ensuring nothing takes them by surprise. Recognizing that he is developing feelings for Greta, Will tells her to do the tasks on her own. She spends quality time with her father and reflects on their lives. In a letter, Lucy instructs that her clothes and other belongings be donated to social causes, which upsets Rosi. Greta has grown distant from her former best friend, Olivia. This happened because Greta got intimate with Sebas, Olivia’s ex-boyfriend. The younger sister puts an end to her casual relationship with Tino. When Will and Greta visit a theme park, they grow closer to each other and kiss passionately. Before things go further, Will says that he has to reveal his past to ensure that she knows everything about him.
Will divulges that he was Lucy’s classmate and friend when they were kids, but was later transferred to another school. Years later, he is an arrogant and careless person who crashes his car while driving under the influence of alcohol. This accident led to the death of Juan, his close friend. Recovering at the hospital, Will faces extreme guilt, which is when he crosses paths with Lucy, who is reaching the end of her battle with cancer. The two build a special emotional bond, prompting Lucy to make him responsible for delivering “The Map of Longing” to Greta. After learning the truth, the younger sister accuses Will of hiding the truth and walks away. She spends time making her own plans for the future, but eventually talks to Will again.
The next task in the game forces her to apologize to Olivia. Greta discovers that her parents are planning to get divorced. Later, she gets intimate with Will, and the two realize they are deeply in love with each other. Though the two of them grow close, unresolved emotional issues threaten to tear them apart. When it is time to read Lucy’s last letters, Greta and Will are forced to confront difficult questions about themselves and the roles they play in each other’s lives.
The Map of Longing Ending: Does Greta Get Over Lucy’s Death? How Does Will Cope with Juan’s Passing?
Greta’s emotional crisis is the emotional core of the story and leads her towards difficult choices. Lucy’s death weighs heavily on her sister’s mind, even as she tries to move on and rebuild her life. The box game helps Greta overcome a few crucial steps in her healing process, as her participation in the tasks makes her believe in happiness and love again. Lucy had always dreamt of going to Paris and Vienna with her sister, so that they could experience the streets where the films ‘Before Sunset’ and ‘Before Sunrise’ are set. The siblings share a sentimental connection to the two movies and always get emotional while watching them. Reading Lucy’s last letter provides the inspiration that Greta has always been looking for. In the letter, Lucy addresses her sister directly and congratulates her on finishing the game.
She talks about the special bond they shared and how she will regret not being able to watch Greta win the battles of life, fall in love, and become a mother. Even though Greta finds it hard to let the sibling go, her imagined version of Lucy tells her to continue living, achieving, recovering, and finding compassion for herself and others. Having realized the depth of her late sister’s message, Greta finally decides to travel to Vienna and Paris to find herself again. Before traveling, she also hands over Lucy’s last letters to her father, mother, and grandfather, giving them a sense of closure. After experiencing the streets of Paris, she finally goes to Vienna, where she bids adieu to her version of Lucy one last time, signifying that she will restart her life.
Will’s past and his connection to his friend Juan’s death make it difficult for him to sleep peacefully. As noticed by Greta, Will keeps having recurring nightmares about the car crash that led to Juan’s death. Having been the one driving the vehicle, Will keeps saying “don’t let go” during his sleep, deeply troubled by guilt and melancholy. After Great goes to Paris, Will takes steps to somehow get over his guilt and grief. He temporarily moves back to his parents’ house, spending time with them and becoming disciplined again. Despite his overall mental health showing signs of recovery, he is still haunted by Juan’s death, especially since the late friend’s parents live opposite Will’s family house.
After several instances of hesitation, he finally visits Juan’s parents, apologizing for his DUI actions that led to the crash and the eventual death. Though the narrative does cover the conversation between Will and Juan’s family, it is implied that the grieving father and mother chose to forgive him. Later, Will visits Juan’s grave and breaks down in tears, finally saying a proper goodbye to his friend. Greta and Will go through a rollercoaster of emotions to achieve liberation from their guilt.
Do Greta and Will End up Together? What Happens in Vienna?
Will and Greta undergo several trials in their relationship, forcing them to come to terms with each other’s grief. When Greta confronts Will about the troubling nature of his guilt, he finds it difficult to respond to her. Though the two of them love each other deeply, these unresolved emotional issues always act as barriers in their bond. When Greta asks him about how he will deal with Juan’s death, Will feels cornered and says that he will always be an emotional mess. This creates distance between the two, and Greta travels to Paris. While she visits several important landmarks in the French capital, he takes time to spend with his family and apologize to Juan’s parents.
Greta now understands that she can no longer be dependent on another person or be responsible for another person in her life again, as she has spent the majority of her time caring for Lucy until her tragic death. Will realizes that he must confront his guilt head-on and reconnect with the love of his life. Before contacting Greta, he visits Elena, his former girlfriend, to whom he was disloyal, and apologizes. Despite her anger, Elena forgives him, allowing him to move on. Later, he reads Lucy’s last letter addressed to him, in which she tells him to forgive himself and that he’s an amazing person. Inspired by this heartfelt goodbye, Will decides to fight for his love.
After experiencing the magic of Paris, Greta finally goes to Vienna, where she visits a museum that houses “The Kiss,” a popular painting by Gustav Klimt. While appreciating the art’s beauty, she is pleasantly surprised to see Will standing beside her. He hopes it is not too late for them to resume their relationship, and she kisses him passionately. The two spend intimate moments in Will’s hotel room and grow emotionally closer. Strengthened by Lucy’s role in their lives, they find the love and emotional support they need in each other’s company. Though their journeys begin with guilt and grief, they conclude with love, hope, and trust.
Will Greta Go to Art School? What Happens to Will?
Greta develops a deep interest in art over the course of her complex life. After deciding to live on her own terms, she takes a bold step and applies for a place at the University of Rome, where she can pursue art. After Paris, she finds time to go to Rome, where she visits the university and imagines this could be her life in the future. Although the narrative doesn’t clarify if she gets into the art school at the university, it can be inferred that she will continue pursuing her passion. Even if the university doesn’t accept her application, she will presumably find a way to achieve success.
Her newfound passion for life and the healthy relationship she shares with Will might help her turn her dreams into reality. As for Will, he may attempt to practice law again and make his parents proud. With the past no longer hindering him, he will likely find ways to get back into the rhythm of life and also achieve professional success. Ultimately, Will and Greta will presumably be much happier and optimistic in the future.
