Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard 2’ continues the story of Andromache of Scythia and her team of immortals as they try to make the world a better place by foiling the dangerous plans of bad guys. The story begins six months after the events of the previous film, bringing back Andy’s former partner, Quỳnh, but this time, there is a new immortal in the mix. The movie ends with Andy losing her entire squad to Discord, the oldest immortal, who has some nefarious plans concerning Andy and her friends.
It is quite a cliffhanger to leave the film on, but this also sows hope for a follow-up. Considering the five-year gap between ‘The Old Guard’ and ‘The Old Guard,’ uncertainty lingers on when, if at all, the movie will get its threequel. However, if all goes well, and Netflix greenlights the third film, it should drop sometime in 2027.
Andy and Discord Will Clash in The Old Guard 3
At the end of ‘The Old Guard 2,’ Andy discovers that Discord has lost her immortality, and she intends to get it back by hurting and/or killing Andy’s friends. The villains already have Joe, Nicky, Nile, and Tuah in her grip, and she is not shy about revealing her plans to torture them until she gets what she wants. The third film will focus on Andy’s efforts to rescue her squad, which will lead her into uncharted waters. In the last scene, she is seen reading through Tuah’s books about Discord, which suggests that she may have chanced upon a detail that gives her more insight into how to defeat Discord. At the same time, she also has Quỳnh by her side, which is a plus point considering that all her friends are either captured or dead like Booker.
The Old Guard 3 Will Continue to Build the Immortals’ Mythology
‘The Old Guard 2’ does a great job of expanding the mythology of the immortals while also setting up more conflict for them to resolve. Still, the characters have lived several lifetimes, and it is clear from the events of the sequel that they are still in the dark about a lot of things. Initially, Andy believed that she was the first, or at least the oldest, immortal. But then, it turns out that Discord is the oldest of them all. She is also the first immortal, which intrinsically ties her to the last immortal, who is revealed to be Nile.
All this information suggests that the true extent of the stories, myths, and theories surrounding the immortals has barely been scratched. With Andy going toe to toe against Discord in the next film, it is expected that the story will delve deeper into this mythology and introduce more concepts and maybe even new immortals into the mix. At the same time, Andy and Quỳnh will spend more time in each other’s company, and with no other immortals to help them, it will be interesting to see them work together. Their dynamic will reveal the equation they shared centuries ago, before Quỳnh was thrown into the depths of the ocean.
The Old Guard 3 Will Not Work Without the Main Cast
For ‘The Old Guard 3’ to continue the story, it is paramount for the entire main cast to reprise their roles. There would be no Old Guard without Charlize Theron’s Andy, with Vân Veronica Ngô’s Quỳnh serving as the lead beside her. Uma Thurman’s Discord will return as the villain, and Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Henry Golding and KiKi Layne are expected to return as Joe, Nicky, Tuah and Nile, with the latter being the most important piece of the puzzle in the conflict to come. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Copley may or may not return based on his fate at the end of the film.
While we see him getting attacked and there are gunshots, there is no confirmation that he has died. This will be one of the mysteries solved by the next film. With Matthias Schoenaerts’ Booker dying in the second film, there is a chance that he might not return for the next chapter of the story. If he does, it will be through flashbacks as Andy and her squad remember him and the sacrifice he made for the team leader. The film is also expected to introduce new characters, particularly in relation to the immortals.
A major change that the next film might experience is the passing of the reins to a new director. Reportedly, Victoria Mahoney, who directed the sequel, revealed that her busy schedule for the next few years might prevent her from jumping into ‘The Old Guard 3.’ Considering that the first film had a different director, it wouldn’t be an odd thing for the third film to bring in a new director and present the next chapter of the story from a new lens.
