As a wild blend of trivia, teamwork, and splashy eliminations, Fox’s ‘The Quiz With the Balls’ continues to serve chaotic fun. In season 2, episode 2, titled ‘Pasta Lovers vs. Loving Pastors’ return with their signature high energy and hilarious banter. Once again hosted by the hilarious Jay Pharoah, it is now time to see two uniquely themed families against each other. They have to guess the correct answers or risk losing one of them in the pool beneath with a single push from the massive balls. Jay welcomes the day’s teams, which are going to be between the Santo family and the Powell family.
Confident Introductions Set the Tone For a Lively Kick-Off Round
As Jay welcomes both families, he asks the Santos to introduce themselves. Connor, the youngest son of the family, reveals how he is the “spaghetti and meatballs” of the household and, hence, everyone’s favorite. He is playing with his father, Vince, who he says is the “Italian Sausage of the family.” He then introduces his angel-like mom, Kelly, his saucy wife, Megan, and his big brother, Kyle. When the host asks if they are trying to protect Kyle for the game, Connor agrees, explaining how he knows almost everything. They further reveal their knowledge about pasta. Now it’s time for the Powell family introduction. Anthony is the dad and the peacemaker of the household, and his wife, Bonnie, is beside him. The other three members are their triplets – AJ (Anthony Jr.), Leilani, and Alannah.
The triplets were born within 1 minute of one another, with Alannah being the family’s cheerleader. When Jay inquires what categories they are hoping for, it is disclosed that they are pretty well-versed in movies, pop culture, music-related topics, etc. It is all thanks to their ability to sing, dance, and AJ’s beatboxing. To top it off, the Powells even present a little show for everyone with their raps and beatboxing. With the introduction of the chiseled lifeguard out of the way, the game commences with the Kick-off round. Each correct answer is worth $1,000. The Santos family is randomly chosen for the first turn, with the category options being Animal Science, Up the Ante, Foxy Host, and World Geography. As they decide to go for Foxy Hosts, their question is going to have five correct answers and one wrong one.
The Santo family’s question is to select the celebrities who have hosted a game or reality show on Fox. Although Vince feels unsafe after the answers are locked in, Megan is ultimately pushed into the water owing to her wrong response. The Powell family selects Animal Science as their category and is asked to choose types of snakes. Although Bonnie is worried about her choice of Stiletto, it turns out that the family has indeed given all the correct answers. Since it is now the turn of the Santo family, they choose Up the Ante as their category, wherein they have to select the games that have an official event at the World Series of Poker. In the end, Kelly chooses the wrong answer, which leads her into her pool. Then, the Powells face the remaining category of World Geography, where they have to answer the names of landlocked countries.
The Pressure Rises as Both Families Battle Through the Double-up Round
During the selection, the Powell family reveals they are from Nigeria, which they hope is one of their correct answers. To their delight, all five of their responses turn out to be accurate. By the end of the first round, they are in the lead with a total of $10,000; for the Santo family, the sum is $7,000. Right after this round is the Double-up Round, which is quite appropriately titled since each correct answer is now worth $2,000. The four categories of these rounds are Foods, Heavy Metals, Wordy Gurdy, and ’80s Music. This time, the first turn is of the Powell family, who select Foods as their first category. They have to choose the correct types of beans.
As the balls are released, Alannah ends up pushed into the pool since she had chosen Danvers, which is actually a type of carrot. The Santo family now has to select the words that are official entries into the Merriam-Webster dictionary, owing to their choice of the category of Wordy Gurdy. Since two of their players are now on the sidelines, they are going to have three right answers and three wrong ones. As they lock in their answers, Jay cautions them that there is a chance they can lose all the family members to the pool. When the balls are finally released, Vince is pushed into the water.
The Powell family next goes with the category of Heavy metals, for which they have to select the real metals. It turns out Bonnie’s confidence in all of their answers is indeed correct, as the balls push none of them. In the remaining category, the Santo family has to answer which artists performed in the USA for the African charity song “We Are the World.” Fortunately, this time, Connor and Kyle provide the correct answers. This brings their total in the game to $15,000. On the other hand, the Powell family finishes in the lead with a total of $26,000. However, Jay announces that things can still change in a blink in the All or Nothing round, in which the question is now worth $10,000.
One Family Edges Out Over the Other by $1000 in All or Nothing Round
For the All or Nothing round, Jay informs the players about their category choices – Space Race, Tech, American Artists, and Extreme Sports. This time, the Santo family goes first, choosing Extreme Sports. They have to correctly select the names of tricks usually used in skateboarding from the six available options. Connor places his faith in Kyle with the answers, and it doesn’t go in vain, as they turn out to be accurate. Right after this, the Powells choose Tech as their category, wherein they must select the items first released in the 21st century. Despite Bonnie stating that Blu-ray was present even when she was a teenager, it turns out that it came out in 2006. Hence, Leilani, who was standing in that position, is pushed off into the water.
Since the Powells have lost one of their members to the pool, they are not going to receive any money for the question. Connor and Kyle next choose Space Race, in which they have to answer correctly the names of two animals that have gone to space. To their absolute delight, they take the lead with their correct response. The pressure is now on for the Powells since their answer is going to determine if they are going to win the game. For the American Artists category, they have to guess the names of the American-born artists. They are overjoyed to give all three correct answers, bringing their total to $36,000. The Santo family, meanwhile, ends with $35,000—just $1,000 short. Being the winner, the Powell family is now going to play the Golden Ball round for $100,000.
Five Correct Answers Lead to a Heartwarming Victory in the Golden Balls
Since only one of the Powells’ family members can play for the grand prize, they put their faith in Anthony. No matter the outcome, the $36,000 is theirs to keep. The six fixed answers are going to be revealed along with a series of questions. If Anthony can answer all five questions correctly, the family can walk out with the $100,000. Upon being asked what he is going to do with the grand prize, he reveals that it has been his family’s dream to travel the world, with Greece at the top of the list.
The household shares an emotional moment as Anthony’s children express how much they respect their father. AJ further expresses how much he respects Anthony, prompting Jay to wish that one day, his son is also going to say to him the same thing. He then announces the two category options of Tom Hanks Movies and Rappers. Since the family watches a lot of Tom Hanks movies, Anthony decides to go with the same. Right then, the answers are revealed, which are as follows: ‘Cast Away,’ ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ ‘Toy Story,’ ‘The Green Mile,’ ‘Big,’ and ‘Forrest Gump.’
One by one, Anthony provides the correct answers to the questions, like the film where his best friend’s name was Wilson, the film where he played “Heart and Soul” on a giant piano, the one that also stars Meg Ryan, the film where he meets multiple US presidents, and which one among ‘Toy Story’ and ‘The Green Mile’ grossed more money in the global box office. Ultimately, the family succeeds in walking away not only with just $36,000 but also the grand prize of $100,000. As the episode comes to an end with congratulations in order, the audience can only anticipate what questions the next contestants have to face.
