‘They Will Kill You‘ follows Asia Reaves as she begins working as a housekeeper at The Virgil, an imposing residential tower in Manhattan. While Asia seems to be an ordinary employee following her boss’s instructions, she is actually concealing her own hidden motives. Much like Asia herself, both the building and those who live there harbor dark secrets that threaten to alter her life permanently. The situation becomes increasingly perilous when Asia discovers the building’s history of missing persons and the potential presence of a Satanic cult operating within its walls.
Trapped in this alien setting and confronted by ghosts from her past, she must battle unimaginable forces. As the true character of the residents emerges and the danger intensifies, Asia is forced into a deadly struggle where her difficult choices will determine whether she survives the secrets of The Virgil. The Virgil is a fictional residential building in Manhattan, where the bulk of the narrative unfolds. The building’s dark, twisted, and puzzling interiors add to its sense of dread and isolation. The Virgil is more than just a haunted house, and it is where souls are immortal, and Satan reigns through temptation and immortality. The residential establishment signifies the secrecy of Satanic cults and the ways in which they operate within the bounds of modern society. The building has a rough history of Satan worship and dates back several decades. The founding family members of The Virgil make a deal with Satan to keep their immortality intact in exchange for human sacrifices. The residential complex is one that tempts vulnerable young women to take up employment as housekeepers, only to make them prisoners or offer them as sacrifices for Satan.
The unique lighting, the sense of mystery, and the deceptive cultists make the building a living entity. Asia’s battle against the cultists takes her to hidden passages and other discreet locations of the building. The Virgil, just like the people who occupy it, offers lies and temptations. It is solely dedicated to immortality through violence. Satanic symbols are not unusual in cinema, but in the case of ‘They Will Kill You,’ they play a major role, conveying the intentions of Lily and the other immortal cultists. The Virgil also adds to the themes of uncertainty and shock in the story. Every corner of the building is secretive and offers various possibilities for vulnerable individuals. Unpredictability is the film’s core mantra, and the residential establishment delivers it throughout the movie’s runtime.
The Virgil also feels real because of how it is designed. The old elevator shafts, the decades-old rooms, and the places of worship add to the story’s overall feel and take it to unexpected places. Towards the end of the narrative, The Virgil sustains significant damage due to Asia’s actions, yet remains intact and functional. Through the building’s fate, the narrative conveys that strong beliefs and discreet communities are not easily erased. Ultimately, The Virgil is the heart and soul of the film, and plays a pivotal role in shaping the fortunes of those within its walls.
