It was in February 2011 when the entire nation was left shaken as three individuals from Bellefontaine, Ohio, went missing in the span of 5 days, never to be seen or heard from again. There initially seemed to be no connection between Tiffany Brown and the married couple, Gladis and Richard Russell, but things changed when the lead suspect in their cases was identified as the same person. This much has been carefully explored in A&E’s ‘Interrogation Raw: Twisted Mind of a Killer,’ along with when and how the disappearances were ascertained to be brutal homicides.
Tiffany Brown Was Found Dead Inside Her Mother’s Basement
Born on April 15, 1984, to Deborah Neeley and Larry Brown as one of their four children, Tiffany LaVaughan Brown reportedly grew up surrounded by affection as well as compassion. Her parents had actually divorced when she was just a young girl, yet their apparent ability to coparent well even after they had both moved on enabled her to find joy in having two separate families. After all, while her father was happily married to a woman named Jill Brown by the time 2011 rolled around, her mother had been dating Samuel “Sam” Littleton Jr. for over 15 years.

Tiffany herself was also a proud family woman at the age of 26, having welcomed two adorable sons into her world – Gage Heitman and Gavyn Heitman – with the support of loved ones. These included her unwaveringly loving and kind siblings, Heather Brown, Lauren Brown, and Michael Brown. The 2002 Triad High School graduate was thus working at a local Lowe’s while attending the Ohio State Beauty Academy, as she was determined to provide better for her children in the future. The sports enthusiast had no idea she would never get the opportunity to do so, as she vanished without a trace left behind on February 11, 2011 – she was last seen leaving her cozy home.
According to records, Tiffany had dropped off her kids at a neighbor’s with a promise to return in a few hours, but she never did, and so her mother called 911 at 8:10 am the next morning. Deborah made it clear that her daughter’s decision to go off the grid in such a manner was extremely uncharacteristic, as she truly loved her family, which led officials to launch an investigation. They left no stone unturned, yet it was sadly only her remains that were ultimately recovered from under a heavy pile of scrap wood in her mother’s basement on February 16. As per her autopsy, she had been fatally stabbed multiple times before being enveloped in a carpet and then hidden in a macabre way.
Gladis and Richard Russell’s Remains Were Found in Different States
The day after Tiffany’s remains were found, Bellefontaine police received another missing persons report for 85-year-old Gladis Russell and her husband, 84-year-old Richard Russell. One of their neighbors had dialled 911 on the fateful morning after noticing that the elderly couple and their vehicle were nowhere to be seen, which was strange considering their routine. When investigators arrived at the scene, they quickly determined foul play since their family hadn’t heard from them for around 24 hours, and even the evidence present was worrisome. That’s because it directly pointed them towards the same man they had already started looking into for Tiffany’s heinous murder.

According to records, Gladis had a habit of keeping a meticulous record of everyone who visited their home, and her last entry was dated February 16, which included the name and the number of the suspect. Detectives, hence, worried the suspect had taken the elderly couple hostage in their own car, but there was no trace of them when they finally located the car over 300 miles away in Princeton, West Virginia, on February 22. The suspect, though, was thankfully found and arrested in the area within 24 hours, following which he was booked into a local county jail for Tiffany’s murder before being questioned further.
He admitted to killing all 3 individuals, asserting he had acted on the “evil thoughts” he had “all the time.” It took him a few hours, but he later also revealed he had disposed of Gladis’ remains in a cotton field and Richard’s near a railway track. The 84-year-old was ultimately found near an interstate in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on February 26, whereas the 85-year-old was found in a cotton field in Dooly County, Georgia, on March 9. They were both identified through dental records, following which it was ascertained that while Gladis died from blunt force trauma to the head, Richard was beaten until he suffered several skull fractures and stabbed once in the chest.
Tiffany Brown, Gladis Russell, and Richard Russell’s Perpetrator Was Arrested Within Days
When officials began investigating Tiffany’s case, they quickly determined that she had left her home on February 11, 2011, to meet the man she considered a father figure. Her phone records made it clear that the last person she spoke to was her mother’s boyfriend of 15 years, Samuel “Sam” Littleton Jr., with her last text being, “OK. I’ll be there in 10.” They reportedly planned to discuss the Valentine’s Day present he had supposedly purchased for Deborah, but it’s unclear what truly transpired when they met, as Sam has never revealed anything. All detectives know for certain is that by the time they came to question him on February 16, he had fled.

That’s when they searched the home Deborah and Sam shared, only to find Tiffany’s remains in the basement with a bloody palm print on her clothes that was later linked to Sam. The former was swiftly cleared of any suspicion, as investigators were able to corroborate her alibi and deduce that she had no involvement in her boyfriend’s actions; thus, the focus shifted purely to finding him. Then they received the report of Gladis and Richard’s disappearance, with her notebook having Sam’s name as well as number, giving them an unexpected lead that led to an arrest on February 23, 2011.
Sam Littleton is Serving His Sentence in Prison Today
In the end, in April 2011, 37-year-old Sam pleaded guilty to three counts each of aggravated murder and gross abuse of a corpse to avoid facing trial as well as the death penalty. Therefore, despite his never addressing the families of his victims or explaining his actions/motives to authorities, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. So, today, at the age of 51, he remains incarcerated at the mixed-security Mansfield Correctional Institution in Mansfield, Ohio, where he is expected to stay for the rest of his natural life.
